(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Iran
 
YANGON, 11 Feb - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Seyed Mohammad Khatami, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the occasion of the National Day of the Islamic Republic of Iran which falls on 11 February 2000.


(2) Defence Services Records Office wins c'ship trophy of Year 2000 National Hockey Tournament

YANGON, 10 Feb - Prizes were presented to winners in the Year 2000 National Hockey Tournament co-sponsored by Myanmar Hockey Federation and Mingala Than Myint Machinery Trading this evening at the hockey pitch of MHF on Theinbyu Road It was attended by Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Defence Services Records Office team won the championship trophy by beating No 11 Light Infantry Division 3-2.

Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Kyi Min presented the second prize to No 11 Light infantry Division team.

Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint presented prizes to members of Defence Services Records Office team.

Officials also presented best player awards.

Commander of No 4 Military Region Commandant of Defence Services Records Office Col Myo Myint presented a gift to Managing Director of Mingala Than Myint Machinery Trading U Than Zaw Oo.

Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented the championship trophy to Defence Services Records Office team.

The Secretary-2 posed for a photo together with officials.


(3) Union Flag conveyed from Yangon West District to Yangon North District

YANGON, 10 Feb - The Union Flag which rested overnight on the stage in Salin Sports Grounds in Kyimyindine Township, Yangon West District!  was conveyed from there to Taikkyi Township, Yangon North District, this morning by the Union Flag relay teams.

At 6.40 am, the Flag conveying programme started in the sports grounds with attendance of members of Yangon West District ant Township Peace and Development Councils, district and township level departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Maternal and Child Welfare Association, teachers and students and the people from 13 townships of Yangon West District.

They saluted the Union Flag with the Guard of Honour of Yangon Command while the military band of the Tatmadaw (Air) played National Anthem.

Afterwards, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein took out the Union Flag from the silver bowl on the stage at 6.45 am, and carried it flanked by the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and police officers, Union nationals and USDA members totalling 32.  He handed it over to Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu who was waiting in front of the archway of the sports grounds.

Lt-Col San Matu planted it in the silver bowl on board the Union Boat.

En route to Taikkyi Township, Yangon North District, the Union Flag was accorded a rousing welcome by thousands of people including members of Township, Ward and Village Peace and Development Councils, USDA members, members of Myanmar Police Force, members of Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Maternal and Child Welfare Association, teachers and students of basic education schools, the Tatmadaw members and their families of Mingaladon, Hmawby and Phugyi Stations, departmental personnel, workers of private factories and plants waving miniature flags and presenting dances and music.

On arrival at the archway of Taikkyi, Lt-Col San Matu took out the flag, carried it flanked by the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and police officers and Union nationals and handed it over to Chairman of Taikkyi Township Peace and Development Council U Myint Than, who also carried and handed it over to the flag relay teams.

Then, Lt-Col San Matu, flanked by the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and police officers and Union nationals, carried the Union Flag and planted it in the silver bowl on the stage of Gyophyu Sports Ground at 10.10 am.

With the Guard of Honour of Phugyi Station, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of USDA, Myanmar Police Force, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, departmental personnel, teachers and students and the people exceeding 6,000 saluted the Union Flag while the military band of Phugyi Station played the National Anthem.

The people in Yangon North District came to the sports grounds and saluted the Union Flag, and were entertained to movies and anyeint in the evening.

(4) Minister for I&P tours Pantanaw

YANGON, 10 Feb - Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, accompanied by officials of the ministry, arrived at Pantanaw, Ayeyawady Division, this evening.

The minister and party, together with Chairman of Maubin District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Hlaing and members, the chairman and members of Pantanaw Township Peace and Development Council, inspected Myoma Market in Pantanaw, and had a cordial meeting with shopkeepers.

Then, the minister and party went to the office of Pantanaw Township Immigration and National Registration Department.

The minister inspected kitchen crops cultivated for staff welfare, and gave instructions.

Next, the minister and party inspected Pantanaw River Crossing Bridge.

The minister gave instructions on construction of the bridge.

Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Saw Tun met with the chairmen and members of Maubin District and Pantanaw Township Peace and Development Councils, heads of department and members of the executive committee of USDA at the office of the bridge construction project.

The minister gave instructions on regional development and cultivation of paddy and other crops.


(5) Minister meets official of UNFPA

YANGON, 10 Feb-Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun met Country Director of UNFPA in Myanmar Dr Sheila Macrae at his office this afternoon.

Also present were Director-General of Population Department and officials.


(6) Tun Foundation Bank opens branch in Chauk

YANGON, 10 Feb - Tun Foundation Bank Ltd opened a branch in Chauk Township on 8 February.

Present were Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, member of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Police , Chairman of Chauk District Peace and Development Council and members, departmental personnel, Honorary Patron of Tun Foundation Bank Ltd and members of the Board of Directors, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and guests.


(7) Rehearsal for Union Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony

YANGON, 10 Feb - Full-dress rehearsal for the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony was held at the People's Square on Pyay Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of the Management Committee for Observance of the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and committee members, members of the panel of chairmen, chairmen of four districts of Yangon Division, commanders of the military regions, senior military officers of Yangon Command Headquarters, officials of Myanmar Police Force, members of the subcommittees, officials of the townships.

The rehearsal included taking place of the State Military Band, arrival of the Union Flag, saluting the Union Flag, taking place of the Union Flag relay team, relay of the flag and departure of the State Military Band.

(8) New Wayalet Street out back into service

YANGON, 10 Feb - As a gesture hailing the 53rd Anniversary Union Day, New Wayalet Street, resurfaced with tar on self-reliance, was put back into service in Mingaladon Township this morning.  Mayor U Ko Lay, Commandant of Mingaladon Station Lt-Col Win Naung and Chairman of the Committee for Resurfacing the Street Lt-Col Khin Maung Oo (Retired) formally opened the street.


(9) MOA on Rural Industries Development Programme signed

YANGON, 10 Feb - A study group comprising heads of diplomatic missions and officials of embassies, departmental officials and local and foreign correspondents led by Director (International Relations) of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Police Col Khan Aung left for Muse on 7 February morning to observe the implementation of the programme of reducing illicit drug use in the highlands of East Asia at six villages in Muse District, Shan State (North), and Bhamo District, Kachin State.

The programme is being implemented by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and United Nations Drug Control Programme.  At the community centre of Nantkat Village in Muse District, Police Col Khan Aung said that UNDCP and China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, signatories of regional narcotic drug control agreements, signed the programme of reducing illicit drug use in the highlands of East Asia in 1996, and the programme has been implemented since June 1997 with the use of $ 1,52 million provided by Britain and United Nations Development Programme.  During the period of the programme, Japan also made contributions to the cause.

CCDAC and UNDCP have been carrying out the programme simultaneously at Manwaingyi Village, Mongkhat Village, Myothit Village and Lweje Village in Bhamo District, Kachin State, and at Nantkat Village and Swansaw Village in Muse District, Shan State (North).

The programme will come to an end in June, Year 2000. CCDAC and UNDCP, in cooperation with experts made assessment of the programme recently, and it is learnt that success has been achieved by 80%.

Similar programmes will be implemented in other villages with the contributions of donor nations.

Field officer of the programme U Thein Win reported on social, economic, health and educational development as a result of community based activities before and after the implementation of the programme at Nantkat and Swansaw Villages and treatment of drug addicts.

Then, the study group toured Nantkat Village and observed the progress of the programme, the village water supply project being implemented with the assistance of Japan and construction of the primary school.

In the afternoon, the study group went to Swansaw (Shan) Village and Swansaw (Palaung) Village, and met with members of Village Peace and Development Council and villagers.

The study group included the ambassador of Italy, the ambassador of Singapore, heads of embassies of France, Britain, the USA, Japan and Australia, officials of CCDAC, UNDCP, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, Health Department, Education
Department, Information and Public Relations Department and Social Welfare Department and local and foreign correspondents totalling 28, who arrived back here by air this afternoon.

(10)  44 Wetlet Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 10 Feb - Forty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Wetlet Township, Sagaing Division.

Forty-four members of Wetlet Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Wetlet Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 2 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
