(1) Senior General Than Shwe inspects Yangon-Sittway Highway, bridge construction projects in Rakhine State

YANGON, 6 Feb - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe left Minchaung Bridge for An after attending the inauguration ceremony of Yangon-Sittway Highway and Minchaung Bridge at the pandal near the bridge in Sittway yesterday morning.

The Senior General and party left Ponnagyun Township for Kyauktaw Township by car, and inspected Yoechaung Bridge, Pikauk Bridge, Kissapanadi Bridge which are covered by the project of ten major bridges, and the condition of the road.

The Senior General and party inspected Kissapanadi Bridge and stopped briefly at the office of the bridge project.

At 11.30 am, the Senior General and party paid homage to Maha Muni Buddha Image in Kyauktaw. The Senior General offered Shwethingan to Maha Muni Buddha Image.

The Senior General inspected all-round renovation of Maha Muni Buddha Image.

Then, the Senior General signed in the visitors’ book and offered donations towards the pagoda funds.

The Senior General and party freed and fed fish at the pond.

The Senior General and party proceeded to MraukU, Minbya and Myebon Townships, and inspected such big bridges as Myaungbwe Bridge and Ramong Bridge and small bridges and condition of the road.

The Senior General and party stopped briefly at the office of Ramong Bridge Project.

Afterwards, they inspected Yawchaung Bridge and small bridges in Myebon Township and condition of the road.

Next, the Senior General inspected condition of the surrounding areas of Shukhintha at Chaunggyi Village in Myebon Township, and had a cordial meeting with regional national people, teachers and students and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

The Senior General and party then inspected bridges such as Daletchaung Bridge and Ohntechaung Bridge and roads on the side of An Township, and arrived at An at 5.30 pm.

A ceremony to mark the inauguration ceremony of Yangon-Sittway Highway was also held in An.

commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally opened the highway, and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally unveiled the stone plaque.

Senior General Than Shwe and party also had a cordial meeting with regional national people who attended the inauguration ceremony.

The Senior General and party stopped for the night at An.

The Secretary-2, together with the commander and the ministers, met with departmental officials of An Township in the station hall of An this morning.

The Secretary-2 said that the purpose of the tour of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe is to inspect the sections of Yangon-Sittway Highway and bridges, and called on all to present their requirements of regional development.

Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Than Aye reported on conditions of the township and requirements.

The commander presented and additional report.

The ministers also spoke on the occasion. The Secretary-2 gave instructions.

Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein went to Yechanpyin Village in Sittway Township at 4 pm on 4 February, and inspected construction of the sea prawn breeding station project, staff quarters and prawn ponds.

The minister also inspected the 10-acre sea prawn breeding pond of fishery entrepreneur U Saw Ba Tun, and gave instructions on breeding of prawns and application of modern methods. The minister also inspected Aungdaing fresh water prawn breeding station in Sittway.

Chairman of the Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Secure and Smooth Transport Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said Sittway-An section of Yangon-Sittway Highway is over 200 miles long, and engineers of Public Works, Tatmadaw members ant local people of Rakhine State built it energetically for about four years. As a result of sharing duties among engineers and workers in building the roads and the bridges, travelling can be made directly by car from Sittway to An and from An to other divisions and states such as Minbu, Magway, Pyay, Yangon and Mandalay.

Once, travelling by car from Sittway to other states and divisions was just a dream, and but due to goodwill and guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, that dream has come true today.

Beginning today, Rakhine State has overcome natural barriers, and due to emergence of Yangon-Sittway Highway, Rakhine State will make progress considerably for sure. Minchaung Bridge is an over-2,000-foot-long bridge. There are nine big bridges which have already been inaugurated before Minchaung Bridge. They are Yoechaung Bridge, Kinchaung Bridge, Maungbwechaung Bridge, Ohntechaung Bridge, Pikauk Bridge, Yawchaung Bridge, Daletchaung Bridge, Ramoung Bridge and Kissapanadi Bridge. These bridges and the highway have been built without foreign assistance but on self-reliance.

The budget of the State has been used for the bridges and roads, and reliance has to be placed on local engineers for their technical know-how and skill.


(2) Union Day delegates from states and divisions arrive

YANGON, 6 Feb - Union Day delegates from states and divisions arrived here by air today to attend the 53 rd Anniversary Union Day Ceremony and the Union Day banquet to be hosted by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing.

Kayah State traditional cultural troupe and Union Solidarity and Development Association delegates led by U P Maung Toe, Rakhine State traditional cultural troupe and USDA delegates led by U Aung Kyaw Than and Chin State traditional cultural troupe led by U On Khant Kap and U Myint Maw arrived at the airport this morning and afternoon.

Cultural troupe members and USDA delegates from Kachin, Shan, Kayin and Mon States and Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions arrived at Yangon Central Railway Station today.

USDA delegates from Magway and Ayeyawady Divisions arrived at No 1 Transit Centre in Bayintnaung Road by car.

They were accommodated at the respective hostels.

(3) Secretary-1 lays cornerstone for construction of  Tuberculosis Hospital (100-bed) in Htantabin Township

YANGON, 6 Feb - A ceremony to lay cornerstone for construction of Tuberculosis Hospital (100-bed) of Social Security Board under the Ministry of Labour was held at the construction site on Yangon-Pathein Road in Htantabin Township at 8 am today, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt placed the nine precious gems casket into the foundation.

At the auspicious time, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein laid the cornerstones for the construction of Tuberculosis Hospital (100-bed).

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt place the bronze plaque into the foundation.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party sprinkled scented water on the foundation. After the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt performed the ritual of golden and silver shower to mark the success of the ceremony.

Then, Managing Director of Myanma Industrial Construction Services U Ye Tun briefed the Secretary-1 on construction of the hospital.

Later, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected  Top  Detergent Plant of First  Top Industrial Cooperative Ltd and Good Morning Confectionery Plant of Myanmar Mayson Industries Co Ltd in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone No 1.


(4) Secretary-1 meets fire victims in Mayangon Township

YANGON, 6 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the temporary fire relief camp at Sanpya Thathanapyu Kyaungtaik on Ward 8 in Mayangon Township at 11 am today.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met fire victims at Sanpya Thathanapyu Kyaungtaik and gave instructions to officials.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the fire devastated area.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party then met the fire victims at the Dhammayon of Zwezon Thathanayama Kyaungtaik on Ward 8 and left there in the afternoon.

On behalf of the State Peace and Development Council, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented 100 bags of rice and garments of the fore victims.

The fire started at the Green Elephant Restaurant on Thamadi 6th Street in Ward 8 at 2.40 am.

A total of 47 houses were destroyed and the 79 households and 432 people were homeless.

Those wishing to make donations in cash and kind for the fire victims are to contact temporary fire relief camps at Sanpya Thathanapyu Kyaungtaik and the Dhammayon of Zwezon Thathanayama Kyaungtaik on Ward 8 in Mayangon Township.


(5)Minister inspects Ywahtaung Diesel Locomotive Workshop, KhinU-YeU railroad

YANGON, 6 Feb - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by officials, inspected iron casting tasks of Ywahtaung Diesel Locomotive Workshop in Sagaing and production of charcoal-substitute industry used coal on 4 February. He gave instructions on quality products to be produced and innovation.

The minister then inspected progress in building of locomotive and carriages.

Afterwards, the minister inspected construction of KhinU-YeU railroad, bridges and Mu River Bridge. He gave instructions on timely completion of the tasks with set standard.

(6) Minister inspects renovation, maintenance of temples, religious buildings

YANGON, 6 Feb - Minister of Culture U Win Sein, accompanied by Director-General of Archaeology Department, Director of Bagan branch and officials, inspected renovation of ancient pagodas in Bagan Yesterday.

The minister and party inspected renovation of No 464 Temple near Minnanthu Village and gave instructions on worksite safety and good position of ancient bricks to be used.

Then, the minister supervised renovation of No 699 Temple housing stone inscriptions in the compound of Hsinbyushin Monastery and gave instructions on digging marble slabs and the wall without damage.

He inspected maintenance of the road from the archway of Hsinbyushin Monastery and tree planting.

This morning, the minister inspected renovation of pagoda No 820 and maintenance and preservation of murals of No 1192 Nagayon Pagoda built by King Kyansittha in 11th Century AD.


(7) 17 Bago Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 6 Feb - Seventeen members resigned from National League for Democracy of Bago Township, Bago Division.

Seventeen members resigned from National League for Democracy of Bago Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Bago Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 12 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
