(1) Senior General Than Shwe inspects development of Sittway in Rakhine State
 
YANGON, 4 Feb-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected development of Sittway in Rakhine State today.

On arrival at Sittway Airport, Senior General Than Shwe and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein, Commander of Danyawady Naval Region Command Commodore Myat Swe, senior military officers and division-1evel officials. The Senior General and party inspected Sittway on a motorcade.

In the afternoon, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the nursery market festival which was held in the compound of Rakhine State Manager s Office of Myanma Agriculture Service in Sittway.
 
Accompanied by Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and ministers, the Secretary-2 viewed the display of vegetables and fruits at Booth, garden farming and organic farming at Booth 5 and horticulture such as cultivation of ornamental plants, Ladyfinger, onion, lettuce, mustard, cauliflower, cabbage and brinjal at Booth 4 and other displays at Booth 3.

The Secretary-2 and party then inspected manageable cultivation methods for residents of apartments at Booth 2, cultivation of crops with the use of liquid fertilizers at a special booth, mushroom cultivation at Booth 6 and sale of fertilizers, liquid fertilizers, seeds and books on agriculture at the shops.

Sponsored by MAS, the nursery market festival was opened on 3 February with the aim of enabling residents to grow fruits and vegetables of superior quality on manageable-scale.

After inspecting the festival, the Secretary-2 and party met with departmental personnel at the office. Lt-Gen Tin Oo said as transport will become smoother in Rakhine State, not only the fish and meat sector of the state but also the border trade will develop. Relying on their own labour, the people of the state should strive with greater momentum for progress of their businesses. The state will gain more progress only when all its people work hard, he said.

Secretary-General of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Than Aung and Central Executive Committee member Col Thein Nyunt, who were included in the Senior General’s party, met with secretary and executives of Rakhine State and Sittway District and Township USDA at Rakhine State USDA Office in Sittway.


(2) Secretary-1 attends opening of multimedia teaching  centres in Myaungmya
 
YANGON,4 Feb-Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, together with ministers, deputy ministers, the chief of staff (air), officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and officials, left here by helicopter this morning and arrived at Myaungmya at 9.15 am.

The opening ceremonies of multimedia teaching centres of No 4, 6 and 1 Basic Education High Schools of Myaungmya were held at the respective schools this morning and in the afternoon.

The Secretary-1 attended the ceremonies and delivered addresses. Also present at the ceremonies were Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, the ministers, the deputy ministers, the senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the department heads, division, district and township authorities, departmental personnel, the director-general of No I Basic Education Department and officials, members of USDA, the school board of trustees, the parent-teacher association, well-wishers, the heads of school, teachers and students.

The ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of No 4 Basic Education High School of Myaungmya was held at the school at 9.30 am.

Headmaster U Saw Frannicis and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Kyin Thein formally opened the multimedia teaching centre of the school. The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the stone plaque commemorating the opening of the multimedia teaching centre.


The Secretary-1 and party inspected the computer application and E-mail room, the electronic media (video system) room, the computer aided instruction room, the electronic media audio system3, the projected media room, the painting room, the domestic science room and the music and arts room.

The ceremony to mark the opening of the multimedia teaching centre of the school was held in the hall of the school.

Vice-Chairman of SBT U Mann Kyaw Aye reported on efforts for the opening of the multimedia teaching centre installed with computers.

Headmaster U Saw Francis reported on the opening of the multimedia teaching centre under the leadership of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils and with the contribution of School Board of Trustees and well-wishers and matters related to modern teaching aids installed at the centre.

The Secretary-1 signed in the school record book. The Secretary- 1 presented a videotape on the life of Buddha for the school to Headmaster U Saw Francis. The Secretary-1 made a speech. The ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of No 6 Basic Education High School of Myaungmya was held at the school. Headmistress Daw Hla Hla Than and member of School Board of Trustees Dr Htay Ntaing formally opened the multimedia teaching centre of the school.
 
Next, well-wishers made donations for construction’s the pagoda. Today’s donations included K 500,000 by State Peace and Development Council, K 150,000 each by Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Information and Ministry of Immigration and Population, K 100,000 each by Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, K 150,000 by Ministry of Industry-1, K 10Q,000 by Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, K 50,000 each by Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs and Ministry of Electric Power, K 100,000 each by Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ministry of Construction, K 50,000 by Ministry of Education, K 150,000 by Asia Wealth Bank Ltd and K 30,000 for two lion statues by Minister U Saw Tun and Daw Yi Yi May.

Then, the Secretary- 1 and party inspected construction of Zinathiri Myahtutkhaung Shwebuddho Pagoda. Afterwards, the 3ecretary- 1 and party paid homage to Myaseinyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Issarira at Myaneinyaung Taungdaw Rahanda Ordination Hall of Myaungmya and donated provisions.
 
On arrival at Myaung mya Jute Mill, Manager of the mill Major Phe Hsaung and personnel welcomed the Secretary-1 and party and conducted them round the mill. They arrived back here in the evening. This afternoon, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanying Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, arrived at Myaungmya District Hospital where he was welcomed by Acting Medical Superintendent Dr Zaw Aung and staff.

Then, the minister inspected operation theatre, X-ray room and patient wards of the hospital, and gave instructions on staff welfare and timely completion of staff quarters.

(3) Minister inspects Thaphanseik multi-purpose dam project

YANGON, 4 Feb-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected Thaphanseik multi-purpose dam project under construction by Irrigation Department near Thaphanseik Village n Kyunhla Township, Shwebo District, on 1 February. The minister and party inspected reinforced concrete spillway, main dam, laying of an concrete, pre-stressed concrete pipe, installation of pen stock and construction of main dam on the west bank of Mu River. At the briefing hall, Acting Director-General of Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win and officials reported to the minister on work done and work being carried out.

The minister gave instructions. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met staff of construction group No 4 and gave instructions to them. The minister and party inspected progress in construction of the main dam and its remaining parts under construction on the west bank of Mu River, installation of outlet conduit and radial gates at the main spillway on 2 February.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and party went to Kindat diversion dam and inspected spillway and control tower.

He gave suggestions on the renovation of canals. The minister inspected spillway and other sectors at Kindat diversion dam.

Director-General of Water Resources.Utilization Department U Win Shwe briefed the minister on the construction of a canal along the Kindat diversion dam. The minister and party inspected cultivation of summer paddy in lower region of Maha Nanda Lake in Shwebo.


(4) Ministry of Cooperatives presents prizes to outstanding students

YANGON, 4 Feb-A ceremony to present prizes to children of staff of the Ministry of Cooperatives was held at the meeting hall of Cooperative Department on Bogyoke Aung San Street this afternoon. First, Minister U Aung San presented certificates of -honour and rewards to four and three distinction winners in the matriculation examination for 1998-1999 academic year.


(5) Permanent Representative U Mya Than presents credentials to WTO D-G

YANGON,4 Feb- U Mya Than, Permanent Representative of the Union of Myanmar to the United Nations presented his credentials as Permanent Representative of the Union of Myanmar to the World Trade Organization to His Excellency Mr Michael Kenneth Moore, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, on 25 January 2000, in Geneva Switzerland .

(6) Deputy Minister for Industry-1 inspects Bandage Factory No 26

YANGON, 4 Feb - Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun, accompanied by General Manager of Myanma Textile Industries U Ye Win, inspected Bandage Factory No 26 in Mayangon Township this morning. The deputy minister inspected the factory and installation of machinery. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun gave instructions on staff welfare. Then, the deputy minister inspected Yankin Garment Factory No 27.


(7) Chinese dance troupe presents entertainment programme

YANGON, 4 Feb- Hong Kong Chinese national cultural dance troupe presented second-day entertainment programme at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road this evening to raise funds for Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association. It was attended by Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Central Executive Committee members and the public.They presented Chinese traditional dances and dances and songs of Myanma traditional Thingyan Festival.


(8) Hong Kong Chinese dance troupe presents US $ 5,000, K 700,000 to MMCWA

YANGON, 4 Feb Hong Kong Chinese national cultural dance troupe presented US$ 5,0(00 and K 700,000 to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the multi-purpose building of MMCWA at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and members Honorary Patron of Hong Kong Overseas Chinese General Association Mr Ku Suen Fai, Chairman of the Association Mr Wong Kyin Pyu and donors. First, Mr Ku Suen for presented souvenir for MMCWA to Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe. Then, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe accepted US$ 5,000 donated by Mr & Mrs Wong Kyin Pyu, K 500,000 by Mr Ku Suen Fai, Mr Wansitt Kam, Mr Nio Kam Kie and Mr Wong Shing Chun, K 100,000 by Miss Lam Chi Wah and K 100000 by Hong Kong Overseas Chinese General Association. The guests then visited the Children All-round Development Centre and domestic science schools.

(9) Commander inspects construction of Health Planning Department (Upper Myanmar)

YANGON, 4 Feb-Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen,Ye Myint, accompanied by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win and officials, arrived at construction site of Health Planning Department (Upper Myanmar) branch office on 35th Street, between 59th and 60th Streets, Chanayethazan Township, on 3 February. Thc commander inspected construction of the building and gave instruction on work.

Then, the commander proceeded to Hsinbyukan Sports Ground at the corner of 78th Street and Theikpan Street in Chanmyathazi Township, and inspected preparation for Mandalay Division Nursery Market Festival.

Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein and Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win reported to the commander on preparations for display of booths in the Nursery Market Festival, nursery plantations and car parking. The commander then gave necessary instructions.


(10)  Members of SURA armed group exchange arms for Peace

YANGON, 4 Feb- The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, is making efforts to build national consolidation for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

Armed groups have come to realize that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation and people and I that they have to work for regional development. After understanding the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the government, remaining armed groups are exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

Deputy section leader Sai Hla, Pvts Aik Luk and Hsan Kya of 152 Battalion of No 758 Brigade of SURA I armed group exchanged arms for peace at Mangpan military camp of North-East Command area on 24 January. Similarly, Captain level

Maung Khin (a) Sai Mak and Pvts Lun Kya and San Tun of SURA No 153 Battalion, bring together with them one M 16, two M-22s, 260 rounds of ammunition, three magazines of BA-63 and one Icon walkie-talkie exchanged arms for peace at Naunglaing camp of North-East Command area on 28 January.

Officials of North-East Command warmly welcomed the persons who exchanged arms for peace and attended to their .needs.

More persons of armed groups are going to exchange arms for peace.


(11)  10 Patheingyi Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 4 Feb-Ten members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division. Ten members of Patheingyi Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Patheingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 4 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
