(1) Secretary-1 inspects Shwedagon Pagoda general renovation

YANGON, 1 Feb - Patron of Shwedagon Pagoda Perpetual All-round Renovation Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected general renovation of the pagoda this evening.  The Secretary-1 and party paid homage to Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image on the upper terrace.

After inspecting the renovation of religious buildings on the pagoda platform, the Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to Htidaw Pagoda at Sunday corner.

They then inspected renovation of Seinbudaw and Htidaw of Naungdawgyi Pagoda and gave suggestions to officials .

Shwedagon Pagoda Perpetual All-round Renovation Work Committee held s meeting at Old Museum Tazaung on the pagoda plat form.

Chairman of the World Committee Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint reported to the Secretary-1 on progress in implementing the pagoda renovation projects, renovation of Naungdawgyi Pagoda, renovation of the archway of the western stairway and renovation of tazaungs on the pagoda platform.

The Secretary-1 gave suggestions.


(2) Development of Myanmar Airways International coordinated

YANGON, 1 Feb - A coordination meeting (1/2000) on development of Myanmar Airways International was held at the office of the Minister for Transport this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on MAI's flight hours, passengers, tons of cargo, income and expenditure, monetary effect and measures being undertaken for development of MAI.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of MAI U Maung Maung Ohn reported on work done over the resolutions passed by the previous meeting.

Those present reported on work to be done for development of MAI.

The Secretary-1 said coordinations were made for development of MAI and progress has been made to some extent.

He spoke of the need to take measures for bringing about State and national interest in all sectors from political, economic and social points of views.

He also spoke of the need to make efforts not only for interest of government organizations but also that of national private entrepreneurs and the people.  By so doing, national interests I could be served, he said. He said efforts are to be made for developments of MAI, national interests, foreign investment and development of tourism industry .

The Secretary-1 called for striving for serving the national interests and interests of partner countries, while promoting momentum of development of MAI and reviewing international situation especially economic a social conditions of ASEAN member nations.


(3) Wellwishers donate cash to undertakings of  Thanmyanthu Economic Group

YANGON, 1 Feb - Wellwishers donated cash to the undertakings run by Thanmyanthu Economic Group yesterday evening.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the cash donation ceremony held at the City Hall.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo spoke on the occasion, explaining the assistance of Wellwishers for the tasks benefiting the people.

Director of Resettlements Col Aung Thein thanked the donors.

The Secretary-2, Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and senior military officers accepted over K 4.6 million.

(4) 80 roads with total length of 15,412 miles  designated Union highways

YANGON, 1 Feb - Chairman of the Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport held its third four-monthly meeting for 1999 this morning at Public Works Head Office, addressed by Chairman of the Central Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, on behalf of the minister, reported on implementing of major bridge projects, building of new roads and maintaining of the existing ones and progress in implementing of airport projects and housing projects.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Secretary-2.


(5) UMFCCI hosts Chamber Night

YANGON, 1 Feb - Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry hosted dinner (Chamber Night) at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel here this evening, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung explained plans to render assistance to entrepreneurs.

President of UMFCCI U Win Myint spoke words of thanks.

Dinner was hosted.


(6) Fourth donation ceremony for Maha Theindawgyi  Pariyatti Sarthintaik

YANGON, 1 Feb - The fourth cash donation ceremony for construction of Maha , Saddhammodaya Koehtat s Kyaungdawgyi at Maha Theindawgyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Pabedan Township was held at the Sarthintaik this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin 00.  Padana Nayaka Sayadaw of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Kumara administered the Five Precepts.

Then the Secretary-2 and party donated provisions to the Sayadaws.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party shared merits gained.

Later, the Secretary-2 and party inspected progress in construction of the Kyaungdawgyi and gave necessary instructions.


(7)  Seminar on Financial Information Systems in Asia and  Pacific commences

YANGON, 1 Feb - A seminar on Financial Information Systems in Asia and Pacific jointly sponsored by Ministry of Finance and Revenue and Centre for Financial Industry Information Systems (FISC) of Japan opened at Traders Hotel this morning.

Present were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister at the

Minister U Khin Maung Thein spoke on the occasion.

Executive Director Mr Furutachi of FISC also spoke.

Officials of FISC led the first day discussions. Altogether 63 participants attended the seminar which continues on 2 February.

(8) Minister for Foreign Affairs, diplomats visit  Myeik, Kawthoung, Dawei in Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 1 Feb- Ambassadors, Charge d'Affaires ai of embassies and resident representatives and their wives led by Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife Daw San Yon, toured Myeik, Kawthoung and Dawei Townships and surrounding areas from 29 to 31 January.

Minister U Win Aung, the Ambassadors and party left here by Tatmadaw flights on 29 January and arrived at Myeik Airport where they were welcomed by Deputy Commander of Coastal Region Command Brig-Gen Tin Latt and wife, Commander of Taninthayi Naval Region Command Commander Soe Myint and officials.

In the Pale Mon Guest House, officials reported on development tasks being carried out in Taninthayi Division.

They then visited Mawtongyi fish breeding camp in Kyunzu Township, 1 00-ton cold storage and 100-ton ice factory, production of prawn and cuttlefish, 350-ton cold storage, 50-ton ice factory and other businesses in Myeik Township.

On arrival at Kawthoung Airport, they were welcomed by Base Tactical Operations Commander Col Ye Phone Myint and wife and officials.  They then visited Thuhtaykyun Hotel.

In the evening, Base Tactical Operations Commander Col Ye Phone Myint hosted dinner in honour of the guests at the hotel.

On 30 January, Minister U Win Aung and Ambassadors observed King Bayintnaung Statue on Bayintnaung Hillock and Bayintnaung Cape.  They then looked round the oil palm plantations cultivated by Yuzana Co Ltd and Annawa Tun Co Ltd.

In the evening, they visited coastal areas of Kawthoung Township and Salon islands by boat.

Yesterday morning, the minister and ambassadors flew to Dawei by Tatmadaw flights.  They were welcomed by Commander of Mawrawady Naval Region Command Commodore Thein Ngwe, Tactical Operations Commander Col Than Win and officials.

They paid obeisance to Lawka Tharaphu reclining Buddha image in Alegon Village, Dawei.

The guests visited Maungmagan Beach Resort in Launglon.

Traditional dance troupes entertained the guests with Dawei traditional songs and dances.  The minister and ambassadors presented flower baskets to the dance troupes.

Then, the guests observed production of local industries and handicraft.

Afterwards, the minister and ambassadors toured downtown Dawei.  They then left there and arrived Yangon in the evening.


(9)  Minister meets officials of Japanese Companies

YANGON, 1 Feb - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Head of Sumitomo Corporation Mr Tomoo Kawata, accompanied, by Deputy General Manager Mr T Onishi, at his office at 11 am today.

Similarly, Minister U Aung Thaung met Chairman of Datmaru Kogyo Ltd Dr Zenzo Ohta, accompanied by General Manager Mr Osamuikeya and party, at his office at 11.30 am today.


(10)  15 Nagmon Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 1 Feb - Fifteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Nagmon Township, Kachin State.

Fifteen members of Nagmon Township NLD, Kachin State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Nagmon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 9 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
