(1)Minister inspects building of Kungyangon Sluice Gate

YANGON, 28 Jan - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected building of Kungyangon Sluice Gate near Kamarpa Village, Kungyangon Township, this morning.

Director of Yangon Division ID U Tin Maung Win briefed the minister on land reclamation in Twantay- Kawhmu-Kungyangen area, building of canals, sluice gates and embankments and land area for extension of summer paddy cultivation.

It was followed by the report of U Kyaw San Win on water supply, building of drainage canals No 1 and No 2 and Kungyangon Sluice Gate, Tawkhayan Sluice Gate and Canal No 3, Khalauk-taya Sluice Gate and Canal No 4 for prevention of floods.

The Chairman of Kungyangon Township Peace and Development Council and officials reported on crop production and summer paddy cultivation.

The minister gave instructions on land reclamation, development of the region, water supply, cultivation of summer and monsoon paddy, use of machinery, completion of the work as targeted and staff welfare.

Afterwards, the minister and officials inspected the construction site of Kungyangon Sluice Gate and building of canals.

The sluice gate is being built across Kungyangon Creek to prevent the area from floods in monsoon and to ensure sufficiency of water supply for summer paddy.

On completion, it will have 15 valves and two canals, 3,000 feet each, and will irrigate 21,400 acres of paddy fields.

The minister also inspected model paddy fields of farmer U Kyauk Doe and canals for 100 acres of model paddy fields and instructed agriculture staff to disseminate agricultural know how to farmers.


(2)Minister visits Match Factory No 2

YANGON, 28 Jan - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, together with Deputy Minister and department heads, visited Match Factory No 2 of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industry in Mingalar Taungnyunt Township this morning. The minister inspected the factory and gave instructions on maintenance of machinery.

Then, the minister and party inspected the logs used for producing match sticks and the paper mill and gave instructions on fire prevention measures and keeping the environment clean and tidy.

Afterwards, the minister met with officials and gave instructions on the work.

After that, the minister attended the closing ceremony of Minicomputer Programming Course No 4 in the hall of the ministry, and made a speech.

He also presented prizes to outstanding trainees and certificates to the trainees.

Altogether 14 trainees attended the eight-week training course.


(3)Rail Transportation Ministry continues meeting

YANGON, 28 Jan - The third four-monthly meeting of the Ministry of Rail Transportation continued for the second day at Myanma Railways head office this morning.

The Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung stressed the need to use funds in accord with rules and regulations, to provide effective supervision to keep records systematically, to operate trains in accord with original schedules, to maintain railroads, to ensure safety of passengers, to take measures to prevent accidents and to make field tours for progress of functions.

Division officers of MR then presented accomplishments sectorwise.

(4)Third four-monthly meeting of Ministry of Transport concludes

YANGON, 28 Jan - The third four-monthly work coordination meeting for 1999 of the Ministry of Transport continued for the second day in the meeting hall of the ministry this morning, attended by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.

The directors-general, the managing directors and the principals reported on the work done.

The deputy ministers discussed matters related to their reports.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe urged all to strive to meet the target of gross national product of the State, and added that as the Ministry of Transport is one of the ministries which are working to earn foreign exchange for the State, all are to regard their own ministry as important and strive to earn more foreign exchange.

Then, the meeting came to a close.


(5)Thilawa Cement and Building Materials Ltd opens TCBM Bulk Cement Terminal in  Kyauktan

YANGON, 28 Jan -The opening ceremony of TCBM Bulk Cement Terminal of Thilawa Cement and Building Materials Ltd, established by Thanlyin-Kyauktan Development Co Ltd, Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development and Simerdev International Ltd of Singapore, was held at the terminal on Thilawa Port Region in Thanlyin-Kyauktan Industrial Zone, Kyauktan Township, this morning.

Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Foreign Investor Mr Robert Loeher and Managing Director . Mr Wolfgang .Perner formally opened the terminal.

Minister Brig-Gen Abel, President of the Company Mr Jean Claude Hellinmeyer and MD Mr Wolfgang Perner spoke.

Then, MD Mr Wolfgang Perner presented 2,000 bags of cement worth K 1.4 million to Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung for the four schools of Basic Education Department in Kyauktan.

Later, Minister Brig-Gen Abel and officials inspected the terminal.


(6)Computers, teaching aids for UFLs (Yangon) and (Mandalay)

YANGON, 28 Jan -The Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China and Ambassador of PRC to Myanmar Mr Liang Dong donated computers and teaching aids for Universities of Foreign Languages (Yangon) and (Mandalay) and Sangyoung Basic Education High School No 2 at Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) this afternoon.

Ambassador Mr Liang Dong presented computers and teaching aids to Minister for Education U Than Aung.

Minister U Than Aung accepted the donations and thanked the donors.

Present also were Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt, directors-general, Cultural Counsellor Ms Ren Xiuzhi of Chinese Embassy and officials.


(7)MFF provides cash assistance for old coaches, footballers

YANGON, 28 Jan - Myanmar Football Foundation, for the first time, provided cash assistance for Saya Nyein and U Sein Hlaing, old footballers as well as coaches, and Maj Bahadur (Retd), once famous footballer of the former national team, today.

The Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint spoke of the need for establishing the foundation and its functions for promotion of soccer, arrangements for providing assistance and selection. He then handed K 100,000 each to Saya Nyein, U Sein Hlaing and Maj Bahadur (Retd). They will also get K 10,000 each monthly.

(8)Work coordinated to hold religious title conferring ceremony and provisions donating  ceremony

YANGON, 28 Jan - A coordination meeting on holding the religious title conferring ceremony and provision donating ceremony was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Religious Affairs this afternoon.

Minister U Aung Khin, said the religious title conferring ceremony will be held on 19 March 2000, and added that religious titles will be offered on a total of 249 Sayadaws, members of the Sangha and nuns including those from abroad and provisions donated to 606 Sayadaws and members of the Sangha including those from states and divisions.

Then, a general round of discussions followed.

Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint reported on offering provisions and Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint on security measures.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.


(9)MPF Director-General meets Japanese police officials

YANGON, 28 Jan - Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win met police officer Mr Toru Onitsuki and party of Japanese National Police Agency together with officials of the Japanese Embassy and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at the MPF Director-General's Office this afternoon.

They discussed the course^seminar on chemicals used in making narcotic drugs to be conducted by Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control, JICA and Japanese National Police Agency and bilateral cooperations in MPF and Japanese National Police Agency.


(10)Japanese people present water-supply equipment

YANGON, 28 Jan - Japan this morning presented water-supply equipment worth $ 64,800 for Dalla Township water distribution project, being implemented by Yangon City Development Committee.

Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai and Joint Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win signed the contract at the City Hall to transfer the equipment.

The Ambassador explained the purpose of presenting the equipment by the Japanese.

Chairman of YCDC Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay thanked the donors and presented a certificate of honour and gifts to the Ambassador. At Yangonpauk-Kyaik-thala region, he inspected paddy cultivation, fish, prawn and poultry farms.

(11)Military attaches visit U Lun Gywe Solo Art Show

YANGON, 28 Jan - Military attaches led by Dean of Military Attaches Brig-Gen Nasiruddin Sarwar, Military Attache of Bangladesh, visited U Lun Gywe Solo Art Show at the National Museum this afternoon.

Accompanied by military officers of the Ministry of Defence, the military attaches arrived at the museum and were welcomed by Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe, Artist U Lun Gywe and officials.

The officials and the artist conducted them around the multipurpose room, where the paintings were displayed, explaining the works of U Lun Gywe.

The military attaches also viewed the works of students which were entries to the contest held in commemoration of U Lun Gywe Solo Art Show.


(12)Soe Kyaw Naing wins first in MGF President's Trophy Golf Tournament

YANGON, 28 Jan - The prize presentation ceremony of the Myanmar Golf Federation President's Trophy Golf Tournament organized by MGF, Myanmar Professional Golfers Association and Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd and mainly sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd was held at Yangon Golf Club in Danyingon this morning.

Commercial Manager Mr Lim Yew Hoe of Tiger Beer presented prizes to daily best golfers Myint Thaung, Saw Win Maung, Myint Shwe, Aung Win and Soe Kyaw Naing.

216 strokes, Khin Myint Zaw with 218 and Khin Htay Yi with 219 in the women' s amateur level respectively.

Officials of Universal Consumer Good Co Ltd and Acce1 International Co Ltd presented prizes to Min Naing.

Then, President of MGF Brig-Gen Win Hlaing gave away first, second and third prizes to Soe Kyaw Naing with 290 strokes, Myint Shwe with 291 and Myint Thaung with 293 in the professional level respectively.

Officials of Universal Consumer Goods Co Ltd presented prizes to Champion Soe Kyaw Naing.

(13)20 kilos of Ephedrine seized in Pyigyidagun

YANGON, 28 Jan - Acting on a tip-off, members of local intelligence unit while waiting at the corner of Kywehsekan 3rd Street in Pyigyidagun Township on 14 January, saw two persons who arrived there to traffick in drugs.

The authorities seized Tin Win, 37, son of U Tun Myaing at 124, No 4th Lane,. Gakyi/1 Ward, Pyigyidagun and Kyaw Linn, 33, son of U Thaung at Ahlon-Kyauksauk Ward, Monywa, together with four packets of Ephedrine powder weighing 20 kilos and Supercub motorbike 1 Ya/29614..

Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(14)48 Shwebo Township NLD members resign of own accord
 

YANGON, 28 Jan - Forty-eight members resigned from National League for Democracy of Shwebo Township, Sagaing Division.

Forty-eight members of Shwebo Township NLD in Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwebo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission and the party concerned on 16 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
