(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman  Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to India

YANGON, 26 Jan- On the occasion of the 51st Republic Day of India which falls on 26 January 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr ERocheril Raman Narayanan, President of the Republic of India.


(2) State Peace and Development Council Chairman  Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Australia

YANGON, 26 Jan - On the occasion of the anniversary of Australia Day, 26 January 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency the Honourable Sir William Deanne, AC, KBF, Governor-General of Australia.


(3) Secretary-2 visits Year 2000 Trade Fair
 
YANGON, 25 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo visited Year 2000 Trade Fair organized by Laser World Co Ltd at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre this evening.

Booths of local and foreign companies were opened at.the trade fair for the final day.
The Secretary-2 and party had photos taken together with officials there.


(4) Secretary-3 hosts dinner in honour of UDNR students
 
YANGON, 25 Jan - Member of Panel of Patrons of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint hosted dinner in honour of students of Regular Course No 31 of University for Development of National Races on the lawns of People s Park this evening.

The Secretary-3 arrived at the People s Park at 6.15 pm and cordially met the students.  Before and during the dinner, vocalists entertained them with songs, accompanied by YCDC music troupe.
 
After the dinner, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint presented gifts to the students and supervisors.

(5) Myanmar delegation arrives back
 
YANGON, 25 Jan - A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin arrived back here by air yesterday evening after attending ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2000 and Third Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers held in Bangkok.


(6) Nampaung Village BEHS gets new building
 
YANGON, 25 Jan - A school building of Nampaung Village Basic Education High School, Lashio Township, Shan State (South), was opened on 20 January morning.  Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Joint Shan State Education Officer, Chairman of School Building Committee formally opened the school building.  Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo spoke on the occasion.  U Sai Kyu explained how the building emerged and Daw Nang Ywet Hsaing Laung thanked officials and dignitaries.  U Sai Kyu then handed documents related to the building to the Joint Shan State Education Officer.  The Commander and officials then inspected it and attended to the needs.  It was built at a cost of over K 7 million.


(7) Military attaches visit South-West Command area
 
YANGON, 25 Jan - Military attaches led by Dean of Military Attaches Brig-Gen Nasiruddin Sarwar, Military Attache of Bangladesh, toured South-West Command area yesterday and today.  Accompanied by Head of Department of the Office of Strategic Studies Col Thein Swe and officials of Directorate of Defence Service Intelligence arrived at control office of Panhline Sluice Gate in Ayeyawady Division, South-West Command area, at 8 am yesterday.  Director-General of Agricultural Planning Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Dr Mya Maung and Director of Construction Group 6 of Irrigation Department U Khin Zaw welcomed them.  The two, officials briefed them on farming at vacant, virgin and fallow lands and wetlands at Nyaungdonkyun in lower Myanmar.  The military attaches and party then studied Panhline Sluice Gate which is irrigating farm lands and Asian Fresh Water Prawn Breeding Centre. After visiting wetlands reclamation project of Myanmar Billion Group and Zeebyukyun Station, they heard a report on progress in conducting agriculture at the project presented by Vice-Chairman of the company U Teza and Managing Director U Zaw Min. The company hosted luncheon in honour of the military attaches.  Member of the Board of Directors U Maung Gyi and Project Director Dr Maung Mar conducted them around summer paddy fields and other crop lands.  At Bo Myat Tun Bridge, Superintending Engineer of the bridge project U Win Kyi explained points of the project.  On arrival at South-West Command Headquarters in Pathein, the military attaches were welcomed by officials.  Deputy Commander of the Command Brig-Gen Tint Swe played goodwill golf with the military attaches at Ayeyawady Golf Club. The deputy commander hosted dinner in their honour.  Traditional music and dance troupes entertained the guests.  The next morning, Manager of Ayeyawady Division Office of Myanma Agriculture Service U Ohn Than, explained agriculture projects in the division at the guest house of the command.
 
During their visit to Pathein Glass Factory of Myanma Ceramic Industries, Factory Manager U Aye Thein explained the operation of the factory. Officials conducted them around the different sections.  At No 4 Plywood Factory, Factory Manager U Kyaw Myint, Chairman of Win and Win Company U Min Swe and Managing Director Dr Daw Myat Thida Myint reported on production of plywood, exports and local sales. The Military attaches were then conducted around the factory.  Later, they visited halawa (local sweetmeat) bakery and Pathein parasol products.  They arrived back here in the evening.

(8) Over 48,000 electorate of Htantabin Township Constituency submit petitions expressing no confidence in NLD Representative elect U Chit Maung
 
YANGON, 25 Jan - Over 48,000 electorate of Htantabin Township Constituency, Bago Division, submitted petitions expressing no confidence in U Chit Maung, Pyithu Hluttaw Representative-elect of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty General Election, at the rally in Myoma sports ground in Htantabin Township on, l0 December 1999.

Present on the occasion were 15,000 local people from 34 wards/village-tracts.  On behalf of the voters, farmer U Thein Han of Sabagyi Village expressed no confidence in U Chit Maung and no support for him.  Farmer U Kyaw Soe of Ohnbin Village, on behalf of the voters, presented petitions expressing no confidence in U Chit Maung and no support for him signed by voters to Chairman of Township Multiparty General Election Subcommission U Soe Than. Out of 50,435 eligible voters of Htantabin Township Constituency, 19,665 or 38.99 per cent voted for U Chit Maung of NLD in the 1990 Multiparty General Election.  The number of voters who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U Chit Maung totalled 48,557 or 96.28 per cent.


(9) 110.22 grammes of dried opium

YANGON, 25 Jan - Police seized dried opium slabs weighing 110.22 grammes from a house on Uyin Street in Magyee Myauk Anauk Ward, Kyimyindine Town- ship, on 18 January.  Acting on a tip-off, members of Myanmar Police Force searched the house of Chit Phwe (a) Aung Kyaw Moe, 32, and uncovered the cache.  Action is being taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
