(1)Maha Bandoola Bridge to connect Pazundaung and Dawbon Townships

YANGON, 23 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Maha Bandoola Bridge across the Pazundaung Creek, which will link Dawbon and Pazundaung Townships, this morning and gave instructions.

Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at the construction site of Maha Bandoola Bridge on the Pazundaung bank at 10.15 am today.

Deputy Superintendent Engineer U Ohn Han briefed the Secretary-1 on progress of work, laying concrete flooring on approach roads, construction of main pier and suspension work.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun presented additional report.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave instructions.

Then, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected construction of main pier (T-1 ) on the Pazundaung bank and construction of approach roads.

Maha Bandoola Bridge is of suspension type with steel frames, is 3,643-feet long.

With the 787.2-foot bridge, and the 2,856 approach roads, it has a 72-foot six-lane motorway and six-foot sidewalk  on either side.


(2)Government has built 104 dams since assuming duties of State About 240,000 acres of farmland being cultivated

YANGON, 23 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended inauguration of Taungyamah Dam in Myaing Township and opening of No 9 Sugar Mill (Yoneseik) in Magway Division this morning.

The earth dam, 5,670 feet long and 90 feet high, is built at a cost of over K 500 million on Taungyamah Creek, 13 miles south-west of Pale and near Tanpya Village in Myaing Township.

The capacity of the dam is 17,040 acre feet. The dam will irrigate about 7,000 acres through feeder 36 canals.

The Secretary-2 and party were welcomed at Bagan - NyaungU Airport by Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and officials.

The Secretary-2 and party left for Taungyamah Dam in Myaing Township by helicopter. They were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, Commander of No 101 LID Col Ye Myint, Acting Director-General of Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win and departmental officials.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin also presented commemorative gifts to the Secretary-2 and party.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin unveiled the stone plaque of the dam and Director U Lun Maung of Irrigation Department Construction-3 formally opened the dam.

The Secretary-2 and party had photo taken. They then inspected the dam and met those present.

The Secretary-2 and party went to No 9 Sugar Mill (Yoneseik) in Aunglan Township by helicopter.

They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and officials.

Brig-Gen Khin Maung reported on construction of the sugar mill.

Managing Director of Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise U Myo Myint reported on construction of the sugar mill, test running, production process, quality, sugarcane cultivation and extended cultivation of sugarcane.

Chairman Brig-Gen Thein Zaw reported on sugarcane cultivation and Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin took part in the discussions.

The Secretary-2 then fulfilled the requirements. He presented a fruit basket to Chief Representative Ms Luoyan of China National Agricultural and Construction Machinery Import and Export Corporation of the People's Republic of China.

Next, Project Director Major Aung Win presented commemorative pennants to the Secretary-2.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Chief Representative Ms Luoyen of China National Agricultural and Construction Machinery Import and Export Corporation formally opened the factory.

The Secretary-2 formally unveiled the signboard of the mill. The Secretary-2 and party started feeding the mill, which can crush 2,000 tons of sugarcane a day.

They arrived back here in the afternoon.


(3)Secretary-3 inspects Ngwehsaung Beach Resort project

YANGON, 23 Jan - Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, together with member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and beads of department, left for Ngwehsaung Beach Resort Project in Pathein Township, Ayeyawady Division, by helicopter this morning. The Secretary-3 and party inspected Ngwehsaung Beach by helicopter.

In meeting with the deputy commander, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials and entrepreneurs at the office of the project director, the Secretary-3 said the purpose of his tour of the project is to solve difficulties if need be and provide assistance for the entrepreneurs.

In Myanmar, there are many beach resorts, but Ngwehsaung Beach Resort with blue water and white sand is nine miles long and very popular.

It is only 29 miles, from Yangon, and the nearest beach to Yangon.

It is necessary for all to complete the project before summer next year.

The Tatmadaw (Government) is implementing political, economic and social objectives for the development of the State, and both economic and social development has been achieved considerably.

Measures have been taken to see to it that people lead a peaceful and secure life, and therefore, beach resorts are being built to enable people to enjoy recreation happily and peacefully.

Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann reported on arrangements to implement the project.

Adviser to the Ministry of Construction U Ba Shwe reported on arrangements to supply water for the project, Managing Director of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Yan Naing on power supply, Managing Director of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications U Maung Maung Tin on arrangements for communications and national entrepreneurs on progress of work in carrying out respective undertakings.

In replying to their reports, the Secretary-3 gave instructions.

Ngwehsaung Beach Resort Project will be completed at the end of February.

The Secretary-3 also inspected the hotel project, and gave instructions on the work.
 


(4)Minister for energy visits Yadana Natural Gas project

YANGON, 23 Jan - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, accompanied by officials, arrived on the platform of Yadana Natural Gas project in Mottama Offshore, sponsored by Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise and Total Myanmar Exploration and Production, this morning.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi met staff and inspected production and pumping of gas.

Then, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi proceeded to Energy Searcher on the offshore block M-8 where the were welcomed by Mr George Conway and officials.

General Manager of Total Myanmar Exploration and Production Mr M Viavlard and Drilling Manager Mr Andre Glowacz explained the drilling programme.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi attended to their needs and presented fruit baskets to foreign technicians and staff of MOGE.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi wents to test well No 1 of block M-8 and pressed the button to start drilling of the test well.
 


(5)Ministry of Construction holds four-monthly coordination meeting

YANGON, 23 Jan - The third four-monthly coordination meeting of the Ministry of Construction was held at the meeting hall of Public Works on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Present were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Ministers and , Managing Director of PW, Director-General of Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development, Director-General of Construction Inspection Department and others.

Superintending engineers from states and divisions reported on their work.
 


(6)Minister for Health meets eye treatment team from Japan

YANGON, 23 Jan - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met four-member eye treatment team led by Director Mr Isao Enomoto of Volunteer Network for Asia and Pacific of Japan at his office this morning.
 


(7)Vice-Chairman of SRV National Conference arrives

YANGON, 23 Jan - At the invitation of Chairman of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Aung Toe, a goodwill delegation led by Vice-Chairman of National Conference of Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Central Executive Committee member of Vietnam Communist Party Mr Nguyen Van Yeu arrived here by air this after noon.

Mr Nguyen Van Yeu and delegation members met Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission Work Committee U Aung Toe at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel at 2 pm today.

The delegation, accompanied by Joint-Secretary U Thaung Nyunt and members, visited the Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 3.15 pm.

Mr Nguyen Van Yeu and delegation members signed in the visitors' book.

Chief Justice U Aung Toe hosted dinner in honour of the delegation at Mya Yeik Nyo Hotel.


(8)33,621 electorate of Nyaunglaybin submit petitions expressing no confidence in NLD  Representative-elect U Tun Kywe

YANGON, 23 Jan - A total of 33,621 electorate of Nyaunglaybin Township Constituency-2, Bago Division. submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Tun Kywe, Pyithu Hluttaw Representative-elect of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election at the rally held in Pyuntanza Sports Ground on 7 December morning.

Present were 22,015 local people from 22 village tracts and six wards.

Farmer U Kyaw Myint from Chaungyin Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Tun Kywe of National League for Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U Mya Thaung from Ayeywa Village presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Tun Kywe and no support for him signed by voters to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Tin Zaw Win.

Out of 34,674 eligible voters of Nyaunglaybin Township Constituency-2, 20,342 or 58.66 percent voted for U Tun Kywe of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election.

The number of voters who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U Tun Kywe totalled 33,621 or 96.96 percent.


(9)211 Hsagyin Village-tract of Labutta Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 23 Jan - A ceremony to present 211 resignations of National League for Democracy of Hsagyin Village-tract, Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division, was held at Basic Education Middle School in Ganaik Village of the township on 16 December 1999.

A total of 211 NLD members of Hsagyin Village-tract, Labutta, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in the party politics of NLD.

On 16 December, a ceremony to present resignations to Hsagyin Village-tract Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission of Labutta Township was held eat Ganaik BEMS.

NLD member U Han Kyi explained reason to resign and presented the resignations to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission U Kyaw Hsan.
