(1)Secretary-1 inspects Taungyama Dam Project and 99  reservoirs project in Magway Division
 
YANGON, 17 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected development of Kawthoung Township yesterday and today. On arrival at Myeik Airport in the morning, the Senior General and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Latt and Commander of Taninthayi Naval Region Command Commander Soe Myint.

The Senior General and party then flew to Kawthoung and were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Ye Phone Myint and officials.

The Senior General and party inspected the implementation of the 150-bed hospital project at Ayemyakantha Ward.

Deputy General Manager of Andaman Club Co Ltd U San Maung briefed the Senior General and Party on progress of work and Head of District Health Department Office Dr Maung Maung on health matters.

In Myintzuthaka Hall, the Senior General and party met departmental personnel of Kawthoung District and Township and members of Union Solidarity and development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade.

At Bayintnaung Hill, the Senior General and party inspected the beautifying of the compound.

After visiting the town in a motorcade, they inspected the place where an industrial zone will be set up in Kawthoung.

At 7.30 pm, the Senior General and party paid respects to Sayadaws led by Township Ovadacariya Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasami at Pyidawaye Pagoda.

Offertories were presented to Sayadaws.

After presenting cash donations to the pagoda, the Senior General signed in the visitors’ book. The Senior General and party then paid obeisance to the pagoda.

This morning, the Senior General met Tatmadawmen and families of battalions and units under Kawthoung Station at the regional battalion.

(2)  Secretary-1 presents prizes to winners of SPDC  Chairman s Trophy Golf Tournament for 1999

YANGON, 17 Jan - A ceremony to launch the State Peace and Development Council Chairman s Trophy Golf Tournament for 1999 was held at Yedaguntaung Golf Course in Patheingyi Township on 15 January morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The State Peace and Development Council Chairman s Trophy Golf Tournament for 1999 was held at Yedaguntaung and Shwesayan Golf Courses in Patheingyi Township on 15 and 16 January.

Chairman of Leading Committee for Organizing the Tournament for 1999 Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung launched the tournament.

The Secretary- 1 attended the prize presentation ceremony of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman  s Trophy Golf Tournament for 1999 at 6 pm on 16 January.

On behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented first, second and third prizes to respective teams in handicap and scratch events. Chairman of the Leading Committee for Tournament Minister U Aung Thaung spoke words of thanks.


(3) Secretary-1 inspects Thaphanseik Multipurpose  Dan Project in Sagaing Division

YANGON, 17 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party, together with Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, left Mandalay by helicopter yesterday morning and arrived at Shwebo in Sagaing Division at 8.15 am.
 
The Secretary-1 attended the opening ceremonies of multimedia teaching centres of No 2 and No 3 Basic Education High Schools in Shwebo.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party went to Thaphanseik Multipurpose Dam Project near Thaphanseik Village in Kyunhla Township, Shwebo District, Sagaing Division.
 
They were welcomed there by division, district and township authorities and officials of Irrigation Department and Myanma Electric Power Enterprise.

The Secretary-1 and party went to Thaphanseik Hydroelectric Power Project.

The Secretary- l and party then inspected construction of the main spillway and main embankment of Thaphanseik Dam.

Afterwards, th7 Secretary-1 and party went to Kyunhla, Sagaing Division.

The Secretary-1 met with members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

After that, the Secretary-1 and party went to Kyunhla Basic Education High School.

The Secretary-1 inspected the computer room and multimedia teaching centre of the multimedia teaching centre of the school.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Shweli Bridge (NgaOh) Project on Thabeikkyin-Bhamo Road near Pyintaunggalay Village in Katha Township.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to Katha, Sagaing Division.

The Secretary-1 attended the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre of No 1 BEHS in Katha.

The Secretary-1 also attended the ceremony to offer provisions to Sayadaws and members of the Sangha of monasteries in, Katha at Tawataintha Monastery.

Present were Sayadaws and members of the Sangha led by Aungmyaythasi Kyaung Sayadaw Digabanaka Sasanadhaja Siripavara Dhanmacariya Bhaddanta Pannajota.
 
The Secretary-1 and party received Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannajota.
 
The Secretary-1 and party presented bags of rice and alms to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party shared merits for good deeds.

The Secretary-1 made donations to Maha Layhtat Pagoda in Katha.

(4) Ceremonies of multimedia teaching centres in Shwebo, Katha

YANGON, 17 Jan - Ceremonies to open multimedia teaching centres were held at Shwebo Basic Education High School Nos 2 and 3 and Katha Basic Education High School No 1 on 16 January morning and evening, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

A ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre was held at BEHS No 2 in Shwebo.

Headmistress Daw Myint Myint and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Tin Win opened the multimedia teaching centre.

Then, the Secretary- 1 unveiled the stone plaque to commemorate the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre of the school.

Afterwards; the Secretary-1 posed for documentary photo with members of SBT and PTA, the headmistress, teachers and students.

The Secretary-1 and party visited computer aided instruction room, computer skill room, audio visual room, audio room, printed media room, control/transmission room and arts room of the school and inspected skills demonstration of students.

Similarly, the multimedia teaching centre of Shwebo BEHS No 3 was opened.

Headmistress Daw Mya Kyi and Chairman of SBT Dr Nay Win opened the multimedia teaching centre.

Then, the Secretary-1 unveiled the stone plaque to commemorate the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre of the school.

The Secretary-1 together with officials, the headmistress, teachers and students had documentary photo taken.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party visited audio room, audio visual room, computer aided instruction room, computer skill room, control transmission room, domestic science room, arts room and painting studio and inspected skills demonstration of students.

The Secretary- 1 then proceeded to Katha Basic Education High School No 1 to attend the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre of the school. The Secretary-1 was welcomed there by Chairman of SBT U Tun Aung Kyaw, Headmistress Daw Tin Tin Yi, officials, teachers and students.

Next, the multimedia teaching centre of the school was opened at 3 pm.

The Secretary-1 unveiled the rooms of multimedia teaching centre of the school.

He then toured audio room, audio visual room, computer skill room, broadcasting room, computer aided instruction room, painting studio, domestic science room and music room, and inspected skills demonstration of students.

Later, the Secretary-1 posed for documentary photo with members of SBT and PTA, the headmistress teachers and students.


(5) Minister meets LPDR delegation

YANGON, 17 Jan - Minister at the President s Office of the Lao People s Democratic Republic Mr Soubanh Srithirath and goodwill delegation called on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung at his office this morning.

The goodwill delegation arrived here at the invitation of Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman s Office Brig-Gen Abel.

They held friendly discussions on promoting bilateral relations and cooperation and also exchanged views on regional issues.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Lao PDR Mr Ly Bounkham.


(6) Minister receives Minister at LPDR President s Office

YANGON, 17 Jan - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman s Office Brig-Gen Abel received Minister at the Lao People s Democratic Republic President  s Office Mr Soubanh Srithirath who called at his office at 9 am today.

The guest was accompanied by Laotian Ambassador Mr Ly Bounkham.

YANGON, 17 Jan - Chief Justice U Aung Toe received Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Mr Union of Myanmar Mr Ubhayasekara Mapa who called at his office at 10 am today.


(8)  42 members of Nattalin Township NLD resign of own accord

YANGON, 17 Jan - Fourty-two members resigned from National League for Democracy of Nattalin Township, Bago Division.

Fourty-two members of Nattalin Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by ,sending letters of resignation to Nattalin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 4 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
