(1) Special Refresher Course No 5 for Basic Education Teachers
 
YANGON, 15 Jan - A ceremony to open Special Refresher Course No 5 for Basic  Education Teachers was held in Yadana Hall of Central Institute of Civil  Services (Upper Myanmar) in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division, this  morning, with the opening address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. After the opening ceremony, the Secretary-l cordially met trainee teachers.
 
Altogether 1,003 trainee teachers of States and Divisions and Education  Colleges are attending the four-week course.

Then, the Secretary-1 inspected construction of the main hall of CICS (Upper  Myanmar) and the hospital (50-bed) in Zeebingyi, PyinOoLwin Township.


(2) Secretary-1 inspects hospital in Mandalay
 
YANGON, 15 Jan - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the ministers, the chairman of Civil  Service Selection and Training Board, the deputy ministers, officials of the  State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, left here  for Mandalay on 14 January by special flight and arrived there at 4 pm.

On arrival at Mandalay People’s Hospital, the Secretary-1 and party were  welcomed by Deputy Minister for Health, Medical Superintendent and  physicians, specialists, doctors and nurses.
 
Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo, Medical Superintendent Dr Han Saw and officials  reported on lay out, treatment with the use of lithotripter, arrangements for  installation of CT Scan diagnosis machine and construction of three-storey  building for cardiac and renal intensive care units.

They inspected arrangements for installation of CT Scan diagnosis machine and  construction of cardiac and renal intensive care units by Daw Nyunt Yi, U  Aung Myint and Daw Khin Khin Sein of Shan Phet Yeiktha. The Secretary-l and part proceeded to Children’s Hospital in Mandalay where  the were welcomed by Medical Superintendent Dr Tin Aye Kyi and doctors.

The Secretary-1 inspected child health unit, neonate ward and operation  theatre.

The Secretary-1 and party spent the night at Nanmyo Guest House.


(3) Secretary-2 attends opening ceremony of MEDI F&B Expo 2000
 
YANGON, l5 Jan - A ceremony to open MEDI F&B Expo 2000 was held in front of  Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this morning, attended by  Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Chairman of Headway General Services Co Ltd Dr Tin Kyi extended greetings.

Managing Director Mr Sudhir Gandhi of Mega Products Ltd and Vice-Chairman of  Medicine and Medical Equipment Entrepreneurs Association U Nyunt Tin spoke  words of thanks.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Chairman of Headway General Services Co  Ltd Dr Tin Kyi opened the MEDI F&B Expo 2000.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and guests toured the expo.


(4) Ninth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band  Competition continues
 
YANGON, 15 Jan - The 55th Armed Forces Day Anniversary Ninth Tatmadaw (Army,  Navy and Air) Military Band Competition continued at the People’s Square this  morning.

Before the competition, the band comprising schoolgirls of Myoma Basic  Education Middle School of Kyauktan Township demonstrated skill with military  and marching songs.

Then, Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary  Armed Forces Day Ceremony Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of  Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and a representative of Myanma Alin Musical  Instruments Co presented prizes to leader of the band Ma Lin Lin Latt.

Afterwards, bands representing Defence Services Academy, Office of  Commander-in-Chief (Navy), Office of Commander-in-Chief (Air), South-West  Command and No 88 Light Infantry Division took part in the competition  playing marching songs.

(5) MAPT opens 360-ton Hlinethaya Rice Reprocessing Plant

YANGON, 15 Jan - The Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading, Ministry of  Commerce, opened Hlinethaya 360-ton Rice Reprocessing Plant in Kacin Village  on the western bank of Hline River this morning.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended  the opening ceremony and formally unveiled the stone plaque of the plant.

 Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an address on the occasion.
 
After inspecting the plant, the Secretary-2 left.

The plant can mill 360 tons of rice a day.


(6) Secretary-2 attends ceremony to mark 50th Anniversary  of Thanantana Dhammapalaka Association

YANGON, 15 Jan - A ceremony to mark the 50th Anniversary of Thanantana  Dhammapalaka Association was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung  Street this evening, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen Tin 00.
 
The Secretary-2 blessed the gathering Chairman of Thanantana Dhammapalaka  Association Dr Mohan Lal, Deputy Minister Col Thaik Tun and Patron of  Thanantana Dhammapalaka Association U Sein Tin made speeches.

Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saram formally opened a book in commemoration of  the 50th Anniversary of Thanantana Dhammapalaka Association .

(7) Dagon BEHS No 1 holds annual PTA meeting

YANGON, 15 Jan - Annual meeting of Parent Teacher Association of No 1 Basic  Education High School  held at Dagon Thiri Hall of the school this  morning was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe.

The Secretary-2, the deputy ministers and guests observed art studio, foreign  language lab and multimedia teaching lab and met students and teachers.

Headmaster U Kyaw Kyaw and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Hla Tin  made speeches.
 
The Secretary-2 said the government is implementing education promotion  programmes systematically and expressed achievements of the programmes of the  school.

He said the achievements have been made due to cooperation of the headmaster,  teachers and members of the School Board of Trustees and students and spoke  of the need to speed up its momentum and for the teachers to carry out tasks  for uplift of education while implementing the 12 Objectives for all-round  development, upholding Our Three Main National Causes.

The Secretary-2 presented prizes to outstanding students Ma Kay Khaing Win  and Maung Soe Than, who secured the third positions at the 1999 Matriculation  Examination.

Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Col Thaik Tun and Deputy  Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint presented prizes to other outstanding students.

Well-wisher U Nay Myo Than and Daw Than Than Myint presented K 100,000 to  Headmaster U Kyaw Kyaw.

Chairman of Old Students Association U Hlaing Myint San and officials  presented prizes to outstanding students and gifts to teachers and other  staff .


(8) Children of Tatmadawmen honoured for outstanding  performance
 
YANGON, 15 Jan - A ceremony to present prizes to children of the Tatmadawmen  (Army, Navy and Air) of the Ministry of Defence for their outstanding  performance in 99 academic year examinations was held at the ministry this  afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council  Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Then, the Secretary-2 and senior military officers presented prizes to 66  primary school students, 19 middle school students, two ninth standard  students, 16 tenth standard students and nine university students totalling 112.

(9) Minister inspects construction of bridges in Yangon,  Ayeyawady Divisions

YANGON, 15 Jan - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by  Deputy Minister U Tint Swe and officials of Public Works, inspected  completion of approach bridge and decoration of Aungzeya Bridge this morning.

Superintending Engineer (Project) U Khin Maung Aye reported on completion of  towers RP 2 and RP 3 and tasks to be undertaken.

Aungzeya Bridge links Insein and Hlinethaya Townships. It is a 3,786 feet  long steel suspension bridge.

The bridge has a four-lane motorway with a width of 16 metres and 1.8 metres  wide foot path.

The minister then inspected Kazan-Tarkway road linking Maubin-Hsamalauk Road  and approach road of Bo Myat Tun Bridge in Ayeyawady Division. Then, Senior  Engineer U Ye Tun reported on progress of tasks. The minister attended to  their needs.

On arrival at Pantanaw Bridge construction site, the minister inspected  building of piers and gave instructions on timely completion, worksite safety  and storage of construction equipment.

Pantanaw Bridge across Pantanaw River, 420 feet long, is being constructed  for linking Ywathit and Pantanaw.


(10)  USDA CEC member meets EC members in Mandalay

YANGON, 15 Jan - CEC member of the Union Solidarity and Development  Association U Aung Thaung met EC members of Mandalay Division USDA, Mandalay,  PyinOoLwin, Kyaukse, Myingyan, Meiktila, Yamethin and NyaungU Districts and  30 Townships from Mandalay Division at Mandalay Division USDA Office on 14  January.

Secretary of Mandalay Division USDA U Tin Maung Oo reported on political,  economic and social conditions in the division, districts and townships.

U Aung Thaung discussed making efforts for nation-building endeavours as  national task, upholding six resolutions laid down at the mass meeting  welcoming the 21st century held in Bagan.

U Aung Thaung then fulfilled the requirements.


(11)  26 members resign from Ngazun NLD of own accord

YANGON, 15 Jan - Twenty-six members resigned of their own accord from the  National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Sagaing Division.

Twenty-six members of Ngazun Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own  accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 29  December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of  NLD.
