(1)Over 225,400 teachers teaching more than seven million pupils at basic  education schools

YANGON, 14 Jan - A ceremony to open Refresher Course No 39 for Basic  Education Teachers held at the Central Institute of Civil Service  (Phaunggyi) in Hlegu Township this morning was addressed by Chairman of Myanmar  Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were ministers, the chief justice, the chairman of the Civil  Service Selection and Training Board, deputy ministers, senior military  officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the  Rector of CICS and trainee teachers. After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and guests had lunch together with  trainees. Altogether 1,510 trainee teachers are attending the course.


(2) Leading Committee for Observance of 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day  Ceremony meets

YANGON, 14 Jan - The Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary  Armed Forces Day Ceremony held the third coordination meeting at Defence  Services Museum and Historical Research Institute this afternoon, with an  address by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th  Anniversary Armed Forces Day Ceremony Secretary-2 of the State Peace and  Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff  (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Afterwards, chairmen and officials of the subcommittees reported on their  respective sectors. Officials of Myanmar Police Force, Fire Services Department and Myanmar Red  Cross Society reported on preparations for the parade ceremony. A general round of discussion then followed. Later, Chairman of the Leading Committee gave the concluding remarks and the  meeting came to a close.


(3) 55th Armed Forces Day Anniversary Ninth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air)  Military Band Competition begins

YANGON, 14 Jan - Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th  Anniversary Armed Forces Day Ceremony Patron of Organizing Committee for  Ninth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition Chief of the  Bureau of Special Operation Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an  address at opening ceremony of the Ninth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air)  Military Band competition in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary Armed  Forces Day at the People’s Square on Pyay Road this morning.

Patron of the Organizing Committee for Military Band Competition Chief of the  Bureau of Special Operation Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo took salute  of the bands.

Then, they saluted the Union Flag, paid tribute to the fallen leaders and  comrades and recited the Four Oaths.

Afterwards, Patron of the Organizing Committee for Military Band Competition  Chief of the Bureau of Special Operation Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo  delivered the opening address.

Then, the participating bands saluted the Chief of Staff (Army) and left. After the opening ceremony, the Guard of Honour Company, flag pipe company of  the military band, Myanmar Police Force band, Fire Brigade band and the band  of Latha Basic Education High School No 2 presented demonstration of skills.

Then, well-wishers made a donation for the Ninth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and  Air) Military Band Competition.

(4)Secretary-2 attends co-ordination meeting to develop regions in Chin State  and Sagaing Division

YANGON, 14 Jan - A coordination meeting was held to develop the regions in  Chin State and Sagaing Division the meeting hall of Commander-in-Chief (Army)  Office this afternoon attended Chairman of Leading Committee for Region-wise  Development of Agriculture Sector Secretary-2 of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Making a speech on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said that while  Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye,  on his inspection tour to Mandalay and Sagaing Divisions and Chin State, had  given guidence on agriculture, transport, education and health sectors in the  regions.

The perennial crops such as apple, orange and mulberry are being cultivated  and tea appropriate to the climate of Chin State is be cultivated under the  guidance of General Maung Aye, he said.

He said that arrangements are being made so that Chin State will become a tea  producing state, and work is to be done for progress of motor roads to  transport regional-products to the market .

The government is implementing for equal development of the border areas and  Chin State with goodwill, he said.

He called on officials of the ministries to implement to develop the regions  and spoke of the need to cultivate kitchen crops, vegetables and fruits in  the regions.

Therefore, Yangon City Agriculture Committee and Mandalay City Agriculture  Committee were formed with Yangon Mayor and Mandalay Mayor as chairmen, he  said.

Arrangements are being made in Yangon, Mandalay and other States and  Divisions for economic develop, he said.

Then, Deputy Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council  Office U Zaw Myint Pe reported to the meeting on education, health, transport  sectors of Mandalay and Sagaing Divisions and Chin State.


(5)Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo  underscores role of military bands

YANGON, 14 Jan - Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army)  Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an address at the opening ceremony of the 55th  Anniversary Armed Forces Day Ninth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and ) Military Band  Competition at the People’s Square today. Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the competition was held with five bands in 1992 for the  first time, and it is now the ninth. The number of participating bands have  also gone up to 47. It was encouraging to see not only the Guard of Honour  and Military Band of Defence Services and Bagpipe Troupe but also band  troupes representing Myanmar Police Force and Fire Services Department which  are reserve forces of the State, and 11 Basic Education High School. In conclusion, he urged them to take part in the competition in accord with  the set rules, to raise the dignity of commands or units, which they  represent, and the Tatmadaw, and to strive not only for improvement of  individual skills but also that of whole unit they represent.


(6) Minister meets Bangladesh official

YANGON, 14 Jan - Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun met Leader  of Bangladesh delegation Secretary of Ministry of Relief and Disaster  Management Mr Azad Ruhal Amin, currently here to attend Senior Officials  Meeting between Myanmar and Bangladesh, at his office at 8 pm today.

(7)Minister for Home Affairs Volleyball Championship opened

YANGON, 14 Jan - The Minister for Home Affairs’ Third Volleyball Championship  was opened at the gymnasium of Yangon City Development Committee in Mingala  Taungnyunt this morning.

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing opened the event.


(8) Prizes presented to outstanding medical researchers

YANGON, 14 Jan - A ceremony to present prizes for the best research papers of  Myanma Health Research Paper Reading Congress of the Ministry of Health was  held at the Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar) in Dagon Township  this evening, addressed by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein. Then, the minister presented prizes for the Best Paper for Basic Research,  the Best Paper for Applied Research and the Best Paper for Health Systems  Research and the Best Poster.


(9) Medical books and CD for Defence Services Institute of Medicine and  Institute of Medicine 1

YANGON, 14 Jan - A ceremony to hand over medicine books and CD to Defence  Services Institute of Medicine and Institute of Medicine 1 was held at Dagon  Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this afternoon.

Myanmar Ambassador to United Kingdom Dr Kyaw Win donated medical books and  CD, to Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the  Office of Strategic Studies and Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt  - Gen Khin Nyunt.

Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of  Defence Services Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win explained the donations.

On behalf of Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Maj-Gen Kyaw Win presented medical books and  CD to Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo for Defence Services Institute  of Medicine and Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Kyaw Myint  for Institute of Medicine 1 .

Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and, Dr Kyaw Myint thanked the  officials.

(10)55 Monyo NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 14 Jan - Fifty-five members resigned from the National League for  Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division.

Fifty-five members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 5  October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
