(1) General Maung Aye meets with Tatmadaw members and  families of Kyigon Station in Kalay

YANGON, 9 Jan-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye went to Kalay, Sagaing Division, yesterday.

The General was accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein and Commander-in-Chief ( Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments concerned.

The General met with officers and the rank and file of Kyigon Station and families in the hall of the station. The General and party inspected repair and extension of Kalay-Kalaywa Motor Road, and the General gave instructions on work.

The Secretary-2, who accompanied the General, met with Col Khin Maung Aye of Kalay Station, Chairman of Kalay District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Chit, Chairman of Kalay Township Peace and Development Council Aung Kyaw Soe and district and township level departmental officials in the hall of Kalay Station in the evening.

The Secretary-2 elaborated on the purpose of their tour to Kalay led by the General, the need for district and township departmental officials to strive for regional development with goodwill and plans being implemented for the development of the State. The district and township departmental officials reported on efforts for development of Kalay District and Township, cultivation of crops and matters related to health and education.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on their work. Secretary-2 Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with Tatmadaw members and families of regiments and battalions in Kalay Station at Aung San Hall in Kalay at night.

Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, who accompanied the General, also met with district and township level departmental officials, employees, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade in Nayritzara Hall of Kalay Township Peace and Development Council Office in the evening.

They gave instructions on agricultural matters and regional development work.


(2)  Rice, provisions donated to monasteries in Kalay

YANGON, 9 Jan-A ceremony to donate rice to monasteries in Kalay, Sagaing Division, was held at Dhammayon of Shwebontha Pagoda in Kalay this morning, attend by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye.

Also present on the occasion were Bhaddanta Chekinda. of Mahasi Monastery and numbers of the Sangha of monasteries of Kalay, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief senior military officers, departmental officials, town elders, wut associations and nuns of five nunneries.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Chairman of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Myohla Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandaka. Then, members of the Sangha recited the parittas.

General Maung Aye donated rice and provisions to the Chairman Sayadaw of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee. Then, the Secretary-2, the Secretary-3 and party presented rice and provisions to members of the Sangha and a nun. Secretary of Chairman of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Dhamma Rekkhita Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Arcinna delivered a sermon.The General and party then shared merits gained.

(3) Secretary-1 attends consecration ceremony of Yazadiyaza Theikdi Maha Hteikkhaunatin Bronze  Buddha Image

YANGON, 9 Jan - A ceremony to consecrate Yazadiyaza Theikdi Maha Hteikkhaungtin Bronze Buddha Image and to share merits for Aungmingalar Ordination Hall was held at Maha Gandayon Kyaungtaik in Mingaladon Garden City, Mingaladon Township. this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and members of the Sangha led by State Ovadacariya Shwekyin Nikayadipati Maha Nayaka Dhamma Senapati Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Sasanabaing Nyaungshwe Kangyi Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vimalabhivamsa, the ministers, the Yangon Mayor, deputy minister officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads, Daw Khin Thein, wife of Lt-Gen Sein Aung (Retired), and family, disciples and guests.

The Secretary-1 formally opened the stone plaque of the ordination hall. Aungmingalar Ordination Hall donor Daw Khin Thein and family formally opened the ordination hall.

Afterwards, a ceremony to share merits were held in the ordination hall. The Secretary-1 and party received the Nine Precepts from Vice-Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa.

Then, the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas.


(4) Secretary-1 attends initial ceremony for construction  of MyoU Pagodas in Mingaladon Garden City

YANGON, 9 Jan -The stake diving ceremony for the construction of MyoU Pagodas in Mingaladon Garden City was held at the respective designated places in the city this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Sayadaws and members of the Sangha led by Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Kyaikhtisaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannadipa, ministers, Yangon Mayor, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, lay persons and guests.

Chairman of Zaykaba Co Ltd U Khin Shwe supplicated on the arrangements for construction of Shwedagon replica pagoda, Maha Myatmuni replica Buddha image, Kaylatha replica pagoda, Dhamma Yajaka replica pagoda, Kyaikhtiyoe replica pagoda, Kyaikhtisasng replica pagoda and Tagundaing in Mingaladon Garden City.

Then, the stake driving ceremony for the construction of Maha Myatmuni replica pagoda was held at the designated plot.

At the auspicious time, Secretary- I Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, ministers, Yangon Mayor, deputy ministers, well-wisher U Khin Myo Aung and wife Daw Hla Hla Wai and family planted the stakes to build the pagoda and sprinkled scented water on the stakes.

The stake driving ceremony for the construction of Kaylatha replica pagoda was held at the designated plot.

At the auspicious time, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, ministers, Yangon Mayor, well-wisher Daw Khin Thein,-wife of Lt-Gen Sein Aung (Retired), and family planted the stakes to build the pagoda and sprinkled scented water on the stakes.

Afterwards, the stake driving ceremony for the construction of Dhamma Yajaka replica pagoda was held at the designated plot.

At the auspicious time, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, ministers, Yangon Mayor, senior Tatmadaw officers planted the stakes to build the pagoda and sprinkled scented water on the stakes.

Later, the stake driving ceremony for the construction of Kyaikhtiyoe replica pagoda was held at the designated plot.  At the auspicious time, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, ministers, Yangon Mayor, and well-wisher U Ko Htoo-Daw Sandar Aung and family planted the stakes to build the pagoda and sprinkled scented water on the stakes.

The stake ,driving ceremony for the construction of Kyaik Htihsaung replica pagoda was held at designated plot for the pagoda. At the auspicious time, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, ministers, the Yangon Mayor, and well-wisher U Khin Maung Aung-Daw Yi Yi May and family planted the stakes to build the pagoda and sprinkled scented water on the stakes.

Then, the stake driving ceremony for the construction of Tagundaing was held at designated plot for the pagoda.

At the auspicious time, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt planted the stake to build the Tagundaing and sprinkled scented water to the Tagundaing.

Then, Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Dhaja Kyaik Htihsaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannadipa delivered a sermon.

(5) Video feature on life of Buddha produced by Myanmar  Inforithm Ltd distributed

YANGON, 9 Jan-A ceremony to distribute video feature on the life of Buddha produced by Myanmar Inforithm Ltd under the supervision of the Ministry of Religious Affairs was held at the Hotel Equatorial this evening, attended by Secretary- 1 of the, State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin said the life of Buddha written by Ashin Janakabhivamsa was put on CD ROM in four languages: Myanmar, English, Chinese and Japanese, and was first distributed on 31 July 1999.

He said youths of Myanmar Inforithm Ltd made efforts for propagation of Buddhist Sasana at home and abroad. Though the CD ROM was not economically feasible it contributes toward propagation of Buddhist Sasana.

The Secretary-1 gave in structions on changing of the life of Buddha recorded on CD-ROM into tape on 31 July 1999 and the tape was produced in five months, he added.Managing Director U Chit Tun Pe reported on characteristics of the tape.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt presented 10,000 tapes to Minister U Than Aung.Minister U Aung Khin then handed over tapes to ministries which had ordered them.

After the ceremony the Secretary- 1 cordially met computer scientists of Myanmar Inforithm Ltd.


(6) Multimedia teaching centre opened at No 1 BEHS in Thanlyin

YANGON, 9 Jan-A ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre was held at No 1 Basic Education High School in Thanlyin Township this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary- 1 and party observed computerized media section, audio visual teaching section, study room (listening and reading), educational broadcasting service centre, music room, drawing room and domestic science rooms. He also inspected skill demonstration of students.

Headmaster U Khin Ohn reported on objectives of the opening of multimedia teaching centre, rooms included at the teaching centre and modern equipment installed at the centre and all-round development of students.

Chairman of school board of trustees U Khin Maung Yin reported on opening of multimedia teaching centre, providing furniture and construction of buildings and cooperation of the well-wishers and the people under the leadership of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils.

The Secretary-1 presented K 500,000 donated by Myanmar Education Committee for No I BEHS in Thanlyin to Minister for Education U Than Aung.

The Secretary-1 and Minister U Than Aung accepted K 3,997;880 including K 50,000 donated by Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, K 100,000 by Yangon City Development Committee, K 50,000 by Yangon South District Peace and Development Council, K 50,000 by Thanlyin Township Peace and Development Council, K 750,000 by U Sein Lwin Daw Phyu Khaing (SL Group), K 500,000 by Myanmar International Thilawa Terminal (MITT) K 379,880 by school board of trustees of Thanlyin BEHS No 1, K 200,000 by Hsinbyudaw Garment Factory and K 100,000 by Mr Fuguro Jiri of Myanmar Sai Steel Industry.

The Secretary- 1 then signed in the record book.The Secretary- 1 said achievements have been made due to cooperation of the people within two years in implementation of education promotion programmes for all-round development of students and uplift of education to the level of international standard.

He said multimedia teaching centres are being opened from primary level for human resources development which is a main factor in building a modern developed nation. Arrangements are being made for installation of modern equipment and provision of teaching and learning methods at universities and colleges and other facilities for uplift of educational level to catch up with that of developed nations in South East Asian region, he added.

The Secretary-1 spoke of the need for the people, teachers and students to strive for peaceful pursuit of education and uplift of education to international level with the application of modern equipment.

Next, the Secretary-1, members of the school board of trustees, members of PTA, the Headmaster, teachers and students had souvenir photo taken.

(7) Commander inspects cultivation, regional development in Htantabin

YANGON, 9 Jan-Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected agriculture and regional development in Htantabin  Township, Yangon North District, this morning. The commander said the government has spent a lot of money on digging over140 canals for growing summer paddy Tatthitkyun region, Htantabin Township. The commander then urged the farmers to extend the cultivation of cold season  crops.

The commander inspected the building of the concrete bridge on the road leading to MashweU Village. Afterwards, the commander also inspected over 60 acres z f pulses and beans of Yangon Command at Myenukyun in Anyasu Village. The commander and party inspected the digging of Tamalo Canal the waterway linking Anyasu and Katwe villages. An official of Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems reported on progress of work.

At Anyasu Village Basic Education Primary School, the commander and party met local people of Anyasu and Thanatpin villages. The commander explained about resettlement of the village, education, health, cultivation and regional development matters.

Next, the commander inspected the welcoming sign at the border of Yangon Division and Ayeyawady Division.


(8) Commander inspects renovation of Maha Zedi Road in Pathein

YANGON, 9 Jan Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, accompanied by Secretary of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Maung and officials, inspected the paving of Pathein detour road (Maha Zedi Road) undertaken by regional battalions and Pathein Township Development Affairs Department yesterday morning.

Then,Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann inspected the work site of the road and gave instructions to  officials.


(9) Minister for Health inspects Primary Health University

YANGON, 9 Jan-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein arrived at Primary Health University in Aung San this morning.

The minister was welcomed by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Deputy Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Maung Maung Win, officials, Rector of Primary Health University Dr Thein Swe, professors and heads of departments. Rector Dr Thein Swe reported on courses conducted at the university.

The minister discussed preparations to move the university to Mag-way, matters relating to students and organizational set up.

The minister inspected the computer room, buildings, lecture halls and the library. The minister proceeded to the Institute of Medicine-1 on Pyay Road, where Rector Dr Myo Myint and officials reported on extension of lecture halls.The minister and party inspected construction of a library and museum there.

(10) Top Detergent Plant opened

YANGON, 9 Jan-First  Top  Industrial Cooperative Ltd opened  Top  Detergent Plant at Industrial Zone No1, Hlaingthaya Industrial City, this morning.
Present were Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister at the Prime Minister s Office U Than Shwe, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, directors general and managing directors of the Ministry of Cooperatives, the chairman of FTIC Ltd and members of the board of directors and members of the cooperative Ltd. Minister U Aung San opened the signboard of FTIC Ltd.


(11) 31 Taze NLD members resign of their own accord

YANGON, 9 Jan-Thirty-one members resigned from National League for Democracy of Taze Township, Sagaing Division. Thirty-one members of Taze Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Taze Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 6 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
