(1)General Maung Aye leads 50,000 in inauguration of Kissapanadi Bridge in Kyauktaw  Township New addition will revolutionize network of highways, boost communications

YANGON, 2 Jan-A ceremony to inaugurate Kissapanadi Bridge across Kissapanadi River built by Bridge Construction Project Special Group of Public Works was held at the pandal near the bridge in Kyauktaw Township this morning, with an address by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye.Chairman of Central Committee for Ensuring Secured and Smooth Transport Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave a speech.

He said Kissapanadi Bridge, over 2,500 feet long, was built at a cost of over K 2 billion. Among ten bridges lying on An-Sittway Section of Yangon-Sittway Highway, Kissapanadi Bridge is the ninth. The big bridges opened before are Yoe Creek Bridge, Kin Creek Bridge, Myaungbwe Bridge, Ohnte Creek Bridge, Pikauk Bridge, Yaw Creek Bridge, Dalet Creek and Ramong Bridge; Min Creek Bridge, the tenth one, will soon be opened; the building of over 200 foot-wide Sittway-An Highway will be completed soon.

The people of Rakhine State will be able to travel directly from Sittway to Yangon, from Sittway to Magway and Mandalay and to other states and divisions by car; due to Rakhine Yoma, Rakhine State had no access to other states and divisions; as there are many rivers and creeks in Rakhine State, the main mode of transport is waterways; the construction of motor roads were so difficult that they could not be built even in the dream.

With a view to overcoming these difficulties, Head of State Senior General Than Shwe had Yangon-Sittway Highway Project implemented as a special project beginning 1996; things which were like dreams and imagination have come true.

Moreover, Thandwe-Gwa-Ngathaingchaung Highway linking Rakhine State and Ayeyawady Division and Taungup-Padaung Highway linking Rakhine State and Bago Division are undergoing renovation and repair; Kyauk-pyu-Taungup Motor Road and Kyauktaw Buthidaung Motor Roads are now being built.

Roads are being built systematically; if all the projects are completed, transport routes linking cities and towns will emerge as a network; between Rakhine State and other states and divisions, travelling will be. smoother and faster  and trading will be brisk and with the rapid progress of transport,. Rakhine State will develop for sure.

The Government is striving for the betterment of transport with a view to ensuring the harmonious development of all the states and divisions and border areas.  Bridges across Ayeyawady River, Chindwin River and Thanlwin River are being built.  Small and medium-size bridges are also being built wherever necessary; as the betterment of transport is the basic requirement for development of states and divisions, a large sum of money is being spent  in building the bridges; the Government is implementing these projects out of goodwill in the hope of achieving the development of states and divisions as well as border areas at the same time.

As the Government, the people and the Tatmadaw, sharing duties, are actively and collectively carrying out tasks beneficial to the people, success has been achieved in so short a time.

In response to national building endeavours of the Government, the entire national people need to energetically carry out production and agricultural work for their food, clothing and shelter.

Due to difficulty in transport and communications, the agricultural produce and marine products of Rakhine State have only a narrow market, and the production  was carried out on a manageable scale; if roads have been built and the flow of the commodity becomes smooth, production work will be able to be carried out on a commercial scale and the living standard of the people of Rakhine State will improve invariably.

Such bridges as Ramaung Bridge, Yaw Creek Bridge and Dalet Creek inclusive of Kissapanadi Bridge opened today, will contribute much to development of Rakhine State; the entire people should be proud of these bridges as they have been built by Myanmar engineers on self-reliance without foreign assistance and support.Through these roads and bridges, a united, strong and modern state is to be built for the national brethren born in the Union; it is the concern of all the people.Afterwards, General Maung Aye said the State Peace and Development Council is building the nation into a peaceful, modern and developed nation; the Government has placed emphasis on the betterment of transport, for as transport is good, the economic development will be achieved and the friendly ties of national  races will become stronger.

The Government is making arrangements to turn out scholars well-versed in science and technology.

Then, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun presented souvenirs to General Maung Aye and Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Afterwards, the General presented gift to Deputy Superintending Engineer U On Sapa of Kissapanadi Bridge Construction Project.

At 9 am, General Maung Aye and party took positions at the head of the bridge. Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally opened the bridge, and then. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun unveiled the plaque of the bridge.

After the opening ceremony, the General and party passed the bridge, cordially met local people and posed for documentary photos with them.Kissapanadi Bridge was built with steel frames and reinforced concrete floor. The 2,512-foot-bridge has a six-feet-wide pedestrian way on both sides of the 28-foot-wide motorway. The passage under it is 203 ft wide with a clearance of 50 ft. The bridge can withstand 60-ton loads.

The construction of the bridge began on 7 November 1996. It cost 2.02 million U$dollars and K 2,095.8 million.Kissapanadi Bridge was opened today in hailing the Independence Day of the Year 2000.
