    (1)Senior General Than Shwe to attend Third ASEAN Informal Summit in Manila

    YANGON, 24 Nov - At the invitation of His Excellency Mr Joseph Ejercito Estrada, President of the Republic of the Philippines, His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and  Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, will attend the Third ASEAN Informal Summit and Meetings of the ASEAN Heads of State/Government and Heads of State/Government of the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea which  is scheduled to be held in Manila on 28 November 1999.


    (2)State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of Cyprus

    YANGON, 23 Nov - Newly accredited Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Union of Myanmar Mrs Rea Yiordamlis presented her credentials to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9:30 am today.

    Also present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt,Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura UAung Htet.


    (3)Secretary-l meets US Congressman and party

    YANGON, 23 Nov - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met visiting US Congressman Tom Campbell and wife and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4.30 pmtoday.

    Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister and Director-General of the Protocol Department.

    The US Congressman and party were accompanied by Charged' Affaires ai of the United States Ms Priscilla A Clappand officials.


    (4)Secretary-1 meets visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand

    YANGON, 23 Nov - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Dr Surin Pitsuwan and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 11 am today.

    Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister and Director-General of Protocol Department.

    The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak.


    (4)Morale important in building modern and powerful Tatmadaw

    YANGON, 23 Nov-The Leading Committee for Organizing the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day held a meeting  at the Ministry of Defence this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of the Leading Committee Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said the work committees and the subcommittees should make systematic programmes for observing the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day grander than in the previous years.

    The State Peace and Development Council is giving extra impetus in building a peaceful, stable, modern and developed nation, which is the national goal. All the Tatmadaw men are striving to implement the 12 objectives, upholding Our Three Main National Causes-non disintegration of the Union, non disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty. The destructive elements who could not bear to see these endeavours are launching perpetration's with various means such as political, economic, social and ideological means to destroy sovereignty of the nation.

    All the work committees should render cooperation to the respective groups which will have to take the security duties at the Armed Forces Day celebrations with full political and security outlook. In building the Tatmadaw to become a qualified, brilliant and modern armed forces, advanced methods are being applied in giving training to the Tatmadaw members to be able to get abreast with the armed forces of other nations. Reaching of the goal the modern and powerful Tatmadaw will still be far away if the morale is poor however much the equipment is advanced.

    All the Tatmadaw members should have the spirit of shouldering the duties with zeal and gallantry never surrendering to the enemy even though they may face difficulties. Secretary-2Lt-Gen Tin Oo chose the paintings and archways for the Armed Forces Day Parade. He then gave the concluding remarks.


    (5)Prizes presented to winners in Ngwetayi Short Story Competition and Myawady Photo Competition

    YANGON, 23 NOV -Prizes were presented to winners in the Fourth Ngwetayi Short Story Competition and the 46th Myawady Photo Competition at the Central Hotel this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

    Myawady Literature House is publishing Myawady magazine, Ngwetayi magazine, Myawady journal and Moethaukpan journal. Publishing of the Myawady magazine began in November 1952 and Ngwetayi in July 1960.Kyaw Nwe Oo was first in the Ngwetayi Short Story Competition, U Wan Maung (Twingyi Wan Maung) second and Police Inspector Maung Than (Maung Thet Hni-North Okkalapa) third.

    In the annual Myawady Photo Competition, U Aung Kyaw Moe (AK Moe-Zoology) won the first prize, U Pe Myint Oo (Pe Myint Oo) second and Khin Maung Win (Shwe Inntha Khin Maung Win) and U Khin Maung Myint (Ko Ko Sonny Theingi Shweyi) third. Special prizes were also presented to the winners in both competitions.

    Kyaw Nwe Oo, on behalf of winners in Ngwetayi Short Story Competition, and U Khin Maung Win (Shwe Inntha Khin Maung Win), on behalf of winners in Myawady Photo Competition, spoke words of thanks. After the ceremony, the Secretary-2 and party posed for photo together with the winners.


    (6)Secretary-2 observes demonstration on use of modern farm machinery

    YANGON, 23 Nov-With the assistance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Thantwin Tractor Co Ltd held a demonstration on the use of modern farm machinery at the Central Model Paddy Farm of Myanma Agriculture Servicein Hmawby this morning.

    Present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council and deputy ministers senior officers of the Ministry of Defence, agricultural entrepreneurs and officials.

    The Secretary-2 and officials observed modern farm machinery including paddy thrashers, tractors, ground preparing equipment, seeders, and small rice mills. The demonstration on the use of the equipment then followed.

    Chairman of Thanlwin Tractor Co Ltd U Kyaw Win explained about his company, saying the company is importing, modern Myanmar, John Deere, Vinappro and Baldan farm machines and also plans to manufacture modern farm machines locally and do services such as reclaiming lands, doing crop harvesting, spraying pesticide, and milling and drying paddy.

    General Manager Mr K Itoh of Yanmar Diesel Engine Co Ltd and Manager Mr Lawrence Yap of John Deere AsiaPte Ltd expressed words of thanks for being granted permission to show the equipment.

    The demonstration on the use of the equipment then followed.  On the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo also said he was pleased to see farm machinery shows of ministries and companies, and it is required to coordinate to enable those engaged in agriculture to buy farm machinery useful and appropriate to the geographical conditions of the respective regions as it is to change manual to mechanized farming without fail.

    He added the Government will provide necessary assistance for it. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected arrangements of May Kha Industry Ltd for poultry farming in Kalargon Village, Hmawby Township.


    (7)Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs arrives

    YANGON, 23 Nov-At the Invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar U Win Aung, a goodwill delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand Dr Surin Pitsuwan arrived here by air this morning. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and members of the goodwill delegation were welcomed at Yangon  International Airport by Minister U Win Aung, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak and embassy staff.

     At 10 am, the Thai delegation led by the Thai Foreign Minister held cordial discussions on matters of mutual interest with a Myanmar delegation led by Minister U Win Aung at Zizawa Yeiktha of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    The Thai Foreign Minister paid a courtesy call on Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 11 am. Minister U Win Aung the hosted a luncheon for the Thai Foreign Minister at Karaweik Palace at 12.30 pm.

    Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Dr Surin Pitsuwan and members of goodwill delegation this evening left for home after one-day friendly visit. The Thai delegation was seen off at the airport by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thai Ambassador Mr Pensak Chalarak and embassy staff.


    (8)Diagnostic Centre of MMCWA opens

    YANGON, 23 Nov-Opening of Diagnostic Centre and donation ceremony were held in the precincts of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthumar Road in South Okkalapa Township this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Central Executive Committee members, Supervisory Patrons of Work Committee, the directors-general under the ministry of health, chairmen of non-governmental organizations, well-wishers of Rotary
    Club in Osaka, Japan and officials of Japanese Embassy.

    Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and well-wisher deputy leader of Rotary Club Mr Hirimichi  Hirai formally opened the centre.

    Deputy leader of Rotary Club Mr Kunitero Amo formally unveiled the billboard of list of donors.  Next, donors and guests inspected the building. Leader of Rotary Club Mr Hidenobu Hiraoka made a speech. Mr Yu Kio Maruyamahanded over related documents to Professor Daw Kyu  Kyu Swe.

    ES4E Corporate Adviser Mr Shinji Arima and Managing Director Daw Mya Mya presented K 100,000 to ProfessorDaw Kyu Kyu Swe.Well-wisher Mr Kazuyoshi Yamada of Uzunomiya Sai Sakusaro Co Ltd presented hospitalequipment to Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe. Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe spoke words of thanks.


    (9) 32 members resign from Pwintbyu Township NLD

    YANGON, 23 Nov-Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pwintbyu Township,Magway Division. Thirty-two members of Pwintbyu Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resignedby sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on S October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
