(1) Secretary-1 inspects  development works in Kengtung Tachilek

YANGON, 1 Oct-Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the ministers, the deputy ministers, Chief of Staff (Air), Myanmar Ambassadors, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments and officials, left here by Tatmadaw flight on 29 September.

They arrived at Kengtung at 1.20 Pm.The Secretary- 1 and party together with Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Inspected development works in Loimwe in Kengtung Township.The Secretary-1 and party arrived at Loimwe Township Border Areas National Youths Development Training School (Loimwe) and they were welcomed by Deputy Director Major Aunt Phone of Eastern Shan State Regional Development Supervisory Office of Border Areas and National Races Development Department, Principal WO II Tun Oo, teachers and students.

The Secretary-l gave instructions. The Secretary-1 discussed opening of agriculture and Livestock Research Camps and establishment of model plantation and Model Livestock Breeding Farms for development of Loimwe region.The Secretary-l and party inspected the site for construction of the hostel. The Secretary-l and party went to Saturatha Thmningala Zedidaw Kyaungtaik in Loimwe and respective to Sayadaw Bhaddanha Punnyasami.The Secretary-l, Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein and Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and presented offertories provisions and religious books to the Sayadaw. The Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Saturatha Thumingala Pagoda. The Secretary- 1 made donations.

The Secretary-1 and party went to Loimwe Basic Education High School where they were welcomed by Headmistress Daw Nan Mya Lon and teachers. The Secretary-1 inspected academic matters at the school and fulfilled the requirements.The Secretary-1 and party arrived at Mongzin. Farm of Hong Pang Livestock Breeding and Development Co Ltd in Special Region-2 of Northern Shan State. They were welcomed by Deputy Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe and Camp in-charge U Lauk Wen Cheng and officials.U Lauk Wen Cheng reported on the camp, construction of Livestock Breeding
Farms, sale and future tasks. The Secretary-l inspected research on artificial insemination of pigs at Mongzin Farm.

The Secretary-1 and partyinspected construction of (200 bed) Hospital. Deputy Minister forConstruction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials reported on data of theproject and progress of work. The Secretary-1 gave instructions.The Secretary-1 and party inspected the site for construction of Nurses Training School in Kengtung. The Secretary-l and party spent the night at Triangle Region Command.On 30 September, the Secretary-l and party, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen
Thein Sein, paid homage to 90 feet high Byadeikpay Yattawmu Buddha image built on Swan Hsat Hill in Kengtung.

The Secretary-1 and party arrived atDhamma Rekkhita Nunnery in Kengtung and paid obeisance to Buddha image there.
The Secretary-1 presented offertories to Nun Daw Nanawady. The Secretary-1 and party arrived at Kengtung Township Border Areas National Youths Development Training School and they were welcomed by Deputy Director Major Aunt Phone of Eastern Shan State Regional Development Supervisory Office of Border Areas and National Races Development, Principal WO II Zaw Min Tun, teachers and students. The Secretary-l presented books and clothes to 145 students.

The Secretary-1 and party went to Monghsat Township where they were welcomed by Commander of Monghsat Station Col Tun Tun, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils and departmental personnel.On arrival at Wanhon Farm of Loihsanhsaw region poppy substitute crop cultivation project, the Secretary-l and party were welcomed by Officiating Tactical Operation Commander Lt-Col Tin Soe, Wa national leaders U Pauk YuChan and U Pauk Yu Yi and members and local national races.U Khin Maung Myint, on behalf of U Pauk Yu Yi, reported to the Secretary-l on the implementing of long- and short-term plans to totally wipe put poppy cultivation in the entire Loihsanhsaw region of Wa Special Region 2, saying Wanhon Farm was set up to enable poppy farmers to discard their poppycultivation practice and to ensure a better living condition for them.After attending to the needs, the Secretary- 1 and party inspected the Wanhon Farm.

At Mongphon village, the Secretary-l and party inspected a vineyard of Honpang Company owned by Wa national races. Honpang Company, which is projected to cultivate 1000 acres of crops in Mongphon region has already put 100 acres under grapes and 600 acres under Iychee.During inspection of Golden Triangle Paradise Resort Hotel Project in Mongphon region they heard a report on points of the project presented by officials. Officials of Vitavas International Co Ltd presented Buddha images to the Secretary-1 and party.The Secretary-l and party then inspected construction of the Abayamudra Buddha image. They paid respects to Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita BhaddantaDhammasiri of Nagahnitkaung Monastery of Tachilek. Secretary -1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave instructions. In the evening, the Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Tachilek Shwedagon Pagoda and presented donations to the pagoda. They also visited the statue of King Bayintnaung. They spent the night at Golden Triangle Hotel in Tachilek.

(2) PRC Ambassador and wife hold reception to mark 50th founding anniversary of People's Republic of China

YANGON, 1 Oct -Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and wife held a reception to mark the 50th founding anniversary of People's Republic of China at the Ambassador' s Residence on Pyay Road this evening.The dinner was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Counci1 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Hla and wife Daw Win Kyi, ministers and deputy ministers and their wives, ambassadors to Myanmar and their wives, officials of UN agencies, heads of department and guests.

(3)  Second South-East Asian Wushu Championship 1999 opens

YANGON, 1 Oct-A ceremony to open the Second South-East Asian Wushu Championship 1999 was held at National Indoor Stadium- 1 in Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township this morning, attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than. Then, Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman of Leading Committee for the Championship Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win delivered an address.

(4)  International Day of Older Persons observed

YANGON, 1 Oct-International Day for Older Persons was observed at the International Business Center this morning with a ceremony sponsored by the Committee for Observance of International Day of Older Persons of the Ministry of Social Welfare. Relief and Resettlement Speaking on the occasion,Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said ,UN Economic and Social Council designated 1 October 1999 as International Day of the resolutions of the according to the resolution of the 52nd UN General Assembly and the recommendation of the 35th meeting of united Nations Commissions for Social  development.Afterwards, UNDP Acting Resident Representative Mr Jarnes W Rawley spoke.

Well-wishers then donated cash in commemoration of the Day. The donations include K 500,000 by U Thein Win, medal recipient for excellent performance in social field (2nd Grade), and wife, K 300,000 by U Tin Oo and Daw Hla Myint of Shwezin Yadana Goldsmith, K 100,000 and Investment Co Ltd U Shwe Kyaing, K 100,000 by Brig-Gen Tin Htut (Retd) and party, K 100,000 each by U Tin Win-Daw Hsan Win of KN Co, U Than Naing and Daw Kyi Kyi Swe of Thamada Thingandaik, U Thaing Win and Daw Htay Htay Nyunt of BTB Co and others. Awards were presented to older persons later. An honorable person expressed thanks.

(5) Armed terrorists hold Myanmar Embassy staff in hailand hostage Thai police, anti-terrorist squad  take control of situation

YANGON, 1 Oct-A group of armed men posing as visitors to collect visas overpowered the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok and held hostage the embassy staff at 11 am local time today. Thai police and anti-terrorist squad officials were reported to be taking the situation under control.

(6) Ministry of Construction holds preliminary work coordination meeting

YANGON, 1Oct-Second four-monthly preliminary work coordination meeting of the
Ministry of Construction was held at the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development (Head Office ) this morning. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun made a speech. Superintending Engineers of States and Division reported on difficulties and requirements.

(7) Mayor hosts dinner in honour of officials who helped organize "Myanmar Day"

YANGON, 1 Oct-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay hosted dinner in honour of departmental officials who had helped organize "Myanmar Day" at Expo' 99 Kunming, China, held on 25 September in Yunnan Province, at Royal Yangon City Hotel at 8th mile junction in Mayangon Township yesterday evening.

(8) Myanmar sells pearls worth US $ 668,985 in Hong Kong

YANGON, 1 Oct - The Myanmar delegation sold 62 lots of pearls at a price of
US $ 668,985 at Hong Kong gems emporium from 23 to 27 September 1999.Led by Managing Director U Maung Toe of Myanma Pearl Enterprise, the Myanmar delegation displayed a total of 107 lots of pearl of the enterprise and joint-ventures at a price of US $ 922,400 at the exhibition. The delegation took part in the exhibition with an aim of boosting foreign exchanging earningsand gaining experiences in selling pearl in international markets.

YANGON, 1 Oct-Minister for Culture U Win Sein met Ambassador of Turkey Mr
Erdinc Ulumlu who called at his office this noon. They discussed promotion of
cultural exchange between Myanmar and Turkey.

(10) Minister attends Review Meeting on Myanmar Medical Council Law

YANGON, 1 Oct - The Review Meeting on Myanmar Medical Council Law (Second Draft) was held at the meeting hall of Food and Drug Administration Unit at No 35 Minkyaung Street in Dagon Township this afternoon, attended by Minister for Health Mai-Gen Ket Sein. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered an opening address. Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo explained matters pertaining to Medical Council Law (Second Draft).Then, those present took part in the discussion. They discussed on classification of medical treatment licenses, formation of Myanmar Medical Council, medical technicians to participate in the council and others. The review meeting ended with concluding remarks by Minister Maj Gen Ket Sein.

(11) ASEAN Steering Committee Secretary meets National Committee Sub-c'tees:

YANGON, 1 Oct-A Coordination meeting between Secretary of the ASEAN Steering Committee and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, U Khin Maung Win and Chairmen of the National Committees and Sub-Committees for ASEAN Functional Cooperation was held this afternoon at the Winzin Minyarzar Meeting Hall at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yangon.Then Audio Visual Presentation on salient points of Hanoi Plan of Action and ASEAN Development Cooperation Forum was made and was followed by the discussions from the focal points concerning the experiences they have had for the last two years after Myanmar joined ASEAN in 1997. The. Director General and officials of ASEAN Affairs Department gave replies to the queries made by them. The meeting ended successfully in the evening.

(12) 57 members resign from Letpadan Township NLD

YANGON, 1 Oct-Fifty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Letpadan Township, Bago Division. Fifty-seven members of Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 7 May 1999 as they no-longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
