(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Portugal

YANGON, 10 June - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Jorge Sarnpaio, President of the Republic of Portugal, on the occasion of the Anniversary of the National Day of the Republic of Portugal which falls on 10 June 1999.

(2)  Secretary-2 inspects Panbe Diversion Weir and Paunglaung Dam Multipurpose Project

YANGON, 9 June - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected Panbe Diversion Weir and Paunglaung Dam Multipurpose Project today.

The Secretary-2 and party, together with Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, proceeded to the work-site of Panbe Diversion Weir near Indaing Village in Tongue Township by helicopter.

In the briefing hall, the Secretary-2 and party heard a report by Brig-Gen Aug Win of Outwit Station on construction of the diversion weir with the labour of the Tatmadaw members with the aim of supplying water for cultivation of summer and monsoon paddy.

Tactical Operations Commander Col Khin Maung Yin reported on implementation of the diversion weir beginning May, and Assistant Director of Irrigation Department U Yee on assistance of technology and machinery for the construction of the diversion weir.

Director-General of Irrigation Department U Myo Myint gave a supplementary report.

The Commander also reported on rainfall of the region and agricultural matters.

In connection with their reports, the Secretary-2 attended to their requirements, and explained the extension of monsoon and summer paddy cultivation and construction of the diversion weir so as to be able to boost the yield of double cropping.

Then, the Secretary-2 presented gifts to an official of Irrigation Department.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party had a cordial meeting with local farmers.

Later, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the construction of the diversion weir.

Next, the Secretary-2 and party went to Paunglaung Dam Multipurpose Project being undertaken in Pyinmana Township, Mandalay Division, by helicopter.

They were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and officials.

In the briefing hall, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint reported on the project.

Brig-Gen Thein Swe of Pyinmana Station reported on all-round assistance being provided for the project.

Project Director of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Wan Kyi reported on works for hydroelectric power and Director of Construction-5 of Irrigation Department U Win Maung on construction of the dam and the spillway.

(3)  Appointment of Cuban Ambassador agreed on

YANGON, 10 June - The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of Mr Ruben Perez Valdes as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba to the Union of Myanmar.

Mr Valdes was born on 18 October 1943 in Havana and graduated with the degree of Political Science from University of Havana. He also passed courses at Moscow's Diplomatic Academy. He served as Revolutionary Armed Forces Officer from 1961-1971. He then joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1971 and has served in various capacities at the Cuban missions in Mongolia, Sri Lanka. the People's Republic of China and Vietnam.

Currently, Mr Valdes is serving as resident Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Kingdom of Cambodia. He will be concurrently accredited to the Union of Myanmar with residence in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He is married and has four children.

(4)  Twantay to put over 120,000 acres under monsoon paddy

YANGON, 9 June - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected regional development and agricultural undertakings in Twantay, Yangon South District this afternoon.

The commander said Yangon Division is among the regions vital for the nation's agriculture sector; and Yangon South District is also an area important for the Division's farming business.

Of the 1.17 million acres projected to under monsoon paddy in the Division this year, 128,555 acres will be cultivated in Twantay Township alone. Arrangements should be made to grow over 34,000 acres of summer paddy, 1,000 acres of edible oil crops and 10,000 acres of beans.

The government has spent a large amount of money in building drainage canals to help farmers to conduct agriculture effectively.

It is required to upgrade the Dalla-Twantay and Dalla-Kawhmu-Kungyangon roads to become 12-feet wide tarred ones. Shade trees must be planted on either side of all the roads in the areas.

Chairman of Twantay Township Peace and Development Council U Aye Kyaing reported on extension of feeder canals in the region to boost summer paddy cultivation and requirements for regional development undertakings.

The commander and officials gave suggestions.

Together with officials, the commander looked into the requirements in repairing the damaged parts of a jetty.

During inspection at Zee-byugon Sluice Gate Project, the commander heard a report on points of the sluice presented by an official of Irrigation Department. The project will be completed in July 1999.

(5)  President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry calls on Deputy PM

YANGON, 9 June - President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Mr Abdul Awal Mintoo, accompanied by Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat, paid a courtesy call on Chairman of Myanmar Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin at his office this evening.

Present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Myo Tint and officials of MIC.

Promotion of trade between the two countries and investment opportunities were discussed.

(6)  Contract signed with Yunnan Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation

YANGON, 9 June - Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems of the Ministry of Transport and Yunnan Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation signed a contract to purchase three dredgers at Ottra Hall of Karaweik Palace yesterday evening.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, deputy ministers, directors general and managing directors and principals of the ministry, officials of Water Resources and Riverine Development Department and guests.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe made a speech on the occasion.

Director-General of Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems Captain Chit Khin and Chairman of Yunnan Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation Mr Lin Zai You explained matters related to their works.

Then, they signed a contract and exchanged the documents.

Afterwards, dinner was held there to mark the success of the signing ceremony.

(7)  Minister for Finance and Revenue meets officials of Japan

YANGON, 9 June - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Chief Representative of Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd Mr Kenji Kawanishi and party who called at his office this afternoon.

Present on the occasion was Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

(8)  Indian delegation arrives

YANGON, 9 June - A four-member Indian delegation led by Secretary (Revenue) of the Ministry of Finance Mr JA Chowdhury arrived here by air this morning to attend the fourth Myanmar-India central level meeting on cooperation in narcotic drugs control.

They were welcomed a Yangon International Airport by Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Director-General of Myanma Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and senior police officers, Ambassador of the Republic of India Mr Shyam Saran and officials.

In the afternoon, the Indian delegation, accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of India, paid a courtesy call on Chairman of CCDAC Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing at his office.

Also present at the call were member of CCDAC Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, the joint secretary of CCDAC and the director (international relations) of the office of CCDAC.

The Indian delegation, together with officials, visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, signed in the visitors' book and made cash donations.

(9)  PRC writers concludes visit

YANGON, 9 June - Chinese writers delegation led by member of the Panel of Patrons of Writers Association of the People's Republic of China Mr Shu Peide left here by air for home this afternoon.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association U Kyaw Aung (Kyaw Aung), Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun-Twantay), Central Executive Committee member U Win Pe (MonywaWin Pe) and officials of the PRC Embassy.

(10)  Full Bench of Supreme Court hears cases

YANGON, 9 June - The Full Bench comprising Chief Justice U Aung Toe and all Supreme Court Justices sitting at Court Room No 1 this afternoon passed judgment on three special criminal appeal cases and four special civil appeal cases which were heard under Section 6 of the Judiciary Law.

The Full Bench also heard one criminal appeal case and five special appeal cases submitted under Section 6 of the Judiciary Law.

(11)  Myanmar-Bangladesh business seminar held

YANGON, 9 June - An economic seminar between the Bangladesh business and investment delegation and Myanmar-Bangladesh Business Promotion Centre took place at the Traders Hotel this morning.

Present on the occasion were President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Mr Abdul Awal Mintoo and party, Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat, Vice-Chairman of Asia Wealth Bank and Chairman of Olympic Company Ltd U Aik Tun and economic entrepreneurs.

U Aik Tun extended greetings.

President of FBCCI Mr Abdul Awal Mintoo, Chairman of Myanmar-Bangladesh Business Promotion Centre Mr R Maksad Khan and Ambassador Mr Jahangir Saadat made speeches.

The seminar focused on bilateral trade, investment, cooperation on mutually beneficial basis and border trade.

YANGON, 9 June - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Chief Representative Mr Kenji Kawanishi of Yangon Office of the Tokia-Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd and his successor Mr Yoshikazu Matsumoto at the MIC office this morning.

Also present were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

YANGON, 9 June - Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint met the five members delegation led by President of The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry Mr Abdul Awal Mintoo accompanied by Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat, who called at his office at 2 pm today.

Also present at the call were heads of departments under the Ministry.

(16)  Medical equipment for YGH

YANGON, 9 June - A ceremony to donate medical equipment for the patients of Yangon General Hospital was held at the Office of Medical Superintendent of YGH this morning.

Present on the occasion were Medical Superintendent of YGH Dr Teik Wan, professors, specialists and well-wishers.

On behalf of the donor Mr Snobby Yuprapan @ Michael Lee and Mrs Snobby Yuprapan from Indonesia, U Soe Lin and U Tint Shein of Foremost Construction Co Ltd and Managing Director of Eurocontinests (Myanmar) Mr Christophe Felix explained about the donation.

Medical Superintendent Dr Teik Wan spoke words of thanks and presented certificate of honours.

The medical equipment of Mr Snobby Yuprapan @ Michael Lee and Mrs Snobby Yuprapan including lifesaving equipment worth K 4.3 million for the first time, ECG and Suction Machine worth K 5 million for the second time and monitor worth K 3 million for the third time and a suction machine and an oxygen concentrator worth K 1 million from Eurocontinests (Myanmar).

(17)  Minister meets soccer team leaving for Shanghai

YANGON, 9 June - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win met the Olympic football team, who will take part in the second leg of Asian Group 7 qualifiers for Year 2000 - Sydney Olympic Games, today.

The qualifiers will be held in Shanghai, the People's Republic of China, from 12 to 18 June.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win made a speech on the occasion, saying Myanmar needs much in development of body structure comparing to the world standard in football and efforts are being made for achieving success.

He said sending the team is the second step forward for the development of football aimed by the State, he said and urged the team to strive for success.

(18)  Myanmar wins gold, silver, bronze in 7th SEA Rowing Championship

YANGON, 9 June - Myanmar rowers won one gold, seven silver and two bronze in the Seventh South-East Asia Rowing Championship held in Singapore on 5 and 6 June.

Bo Bo Tun and Thet Zaw Win won the gold in junior double sculls.

Zaw Lwin Tun won silver in open single sculls, Zaw Lin Tun and Thein Win silver in open pairs, Tun Myint, Naing Naing Htu, Thein Win and Zeya Lin silver in open coxless fours, Bo Bo Tun silver in junior single sculls, Tun Myint, Naing Naing Tun, Thet Zaw Win and Zeya Lin silver in light weight quadruple sculls.

Ya Min Htay won silver in women's light weight single sculls and Ya Min Htay and Tin Kyu Kyu Khaing silver in light weight double sculls.

Tin Kyu Kyu Khaing won bronze in women's open single sculls and Ya Min Htay and Tin Kyu Kyu Khaing bronze in open double sculls.

Six nations, Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand, took part in the championship.

Myanmar team is taking part in the Fourth Merlion Rowing Championship sponsored by Singapore Rowing Federation.

(19)  Moe Thu Aung sets new record at 200-metre backstroke

YANGON, 9 June - Moe Thu Aung set a new record at women's 200-metre backstroke, clocking 2 min 11.07 sec at the age-level swimming competition jointly sponsored by Myanmar Swimming Federation and ILBC at the swimming pool in Dagon Myothit (North) on 29 May.

She broke her old record of 2 min 12.24 sec set in 1995.

(20)  614 members resign from Nattalin Township NLD

YANGON, 9 June - Fourteen executives and 600 members totaling 614 resigned from the National League for Democracy of Nattalin Township, Bago Division, at a ceremony held at Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office on 5 June 1999.

Six-hundred-fourteen members of Nattalin Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 5 June 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Township executive and In-charge of youth affairs U Aung Kyaw Oo, on be half of the party members, explained the reasons of the resignation.

He handed over the letters of resignation to member of the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-Commission U Htein Min.
