(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Italy

YANGON, 2 June - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, President of the Republic of Italy, on the occasion of the Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Italy which falls on 2 June 1999.

(2) Minister inspects production of marble

YANGON, 1 June - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung inspected mining of marble at Nayputaung in Painhnesan Village in Taungup Township yesterday.

Geologist U Myint Shwe reported on geological survey and production on commercial basis, volume of the deposits, kind and its quality with the aid of charts.

Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industries U Than Shwe gave supplementary reports.

The minister then inspected production of marble. Nayputaung lies in Taungup Township.

Marble slabs are being produced from that mountain.

The minister went to Shwedaung in Bago Division and inspected Textile and Finishing Plant there.

The minister and party proceeded to Thayawady and inspected installation of machines at the tile factory to be opened soon and ceramic factory.

(3) Deputy Prime Minister receives Managing Director of VKR Enterprises Ltd

YANGON, 1 June - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Managing Director of VKR Enterprises Ltd of United Kingdom Mr Vela Rasarathnam and party who called at his office at 3 pm today.

Also present at the call were officials of the Government Office and MIC Office.

They discussed development of infrastructure in Myanmar and investment opportunities.

(4) Ambassador U Nyi Nyi Than presents credentials to ROK President

YANGON, 2 June - U Nyi Nyi Than, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Korea, presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr Kim Dae Jung, President of the Republic of Korea, on 21 May 1999, in Seoul.

(5) Greening of Yangon International Airport environs discussed

YANGON, 1 June - A meeting to discuss greening of Yangon International Airport environs was held at the Department of Civil Aviation this afternoon, with an address by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Director-General of DCA U Win Maung, officials of the ministries concerned and Yangon Command, the deputy director-general of DCA and officials.

The minister spoke of the need to renovate the airports and plant trees for greening of the airport-environs. He called for coordination with the responsible personnel to clear the undergrowth near the runways and airport environs.

Director-Genera U Win Maung reported on planting of trees and flowery plants and others to replace rubber plants in the area. The responsible personnel also reported on the work done.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint gave a supplementary report.

Afterwards, the minister and party inspected measures taken for greening of the airport environs including planting of trees, water tank and water supply. The minister gave instructions.

(6) Minister for Construction visits Aung Zeya Bridge Project

YANGON, 1 June - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and U Tint Swe and officials, visited Aung Zeya Bridge Project this afternoon.

The minister, the deputy minister and party inspected progress of work in building the approach structure and the floor of the bridge and making concrete slabs on the bank of Insein Township.

Then, the minister and party inspected, the laying of concrete for the cable tower column in the middle of Hline River.

The minister gave instructions on making all-out efforts for timely completion of the project and work-site safety, and urged officials to closely supervise, the project.

Aung Zeya Bridge, spanning Hline River and linking Insein and Hlinethaya Townships, is 1,154 feet long; the bridge with a 16 metre-wide motor-way and two 1.8 metre-wide pedestrian lanes on its either side, can bear 60-ton loads; 95 per cent of construction works of the approach structures on the banks of Insein and Hlinethaya Townships have been completed.

(7) Minister meets rowing team

YANGON, 1 June - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win met Myanmar rowing team that will take part in the 7th South East Asia Western Boat Race and the 4th Marlon Boat Race to be held in Singapore from 3 to 11 June at National Indoor Stadium-l in Thuwunna this afternoon.

Leader of the team Adviser at the Ministry of Sports Col Ngo Ciin Pau and officials reported on preparation and training of the team.

(8) Cooperatives urged to become forefront economic associations

YANGON, 1 June - Cooperatives should strive to become forefront economic associations upholding dignity and winning public trust, said Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San at a meeting in Meiktila yesterday.

Efforts should be made to achieve success in line with the plans which were laid down systematically during this year, said the minister at his meeting with officials of Cooperative Department Offices of Meiktila, Thazi, Wundwin and Mahlaing, township cooperatives and agricultural and industrial cooperatives at Auto Workshop Cooperative Syndicate.

Crop purchase and export projects should be realized as projected; concerted efforts must be made with the cooperative mind in gathering forces for emergence of the proud and self-reliance syndicates in the market-oriented economic system benefiting the nation, and arrangements were being made to strengthen the cooperative banks to win the trust and reliance of the cooperatives, he said.

At Myanma Lacquer-ware Institute in Bagan-NyaungU, the minister inspected progress in building the assembly hall.

Officials explained to him points of the project.

The design of the hall should reflect Myanmar culture and style, with colours of its floor, walls and ceiling matching each other perfectly, stressed the minister.

(9) Ministry of Education holds first four-monthly coordination meeting

YANGON, 1 June - The 1999 first four-monthly coordination meeting 1/99 of the Ministry of Education was held at the hall of Universities Central Council of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, advisers, the directors-general and chairmen of departments and bureau and board, the deputy directors-general, the rectors and pro-rectors and State and Division Education Officers.

Minister U Than Aung made a speech.

State and Division Education Officers and rectors reported on measures undertaken at the universities.

Next, the directors-general and chairmen took part in the discussions.

The meeting continues on 2 June.

(10) Minister for CPT leaves for PRC

YANGON, 1 June - At the invitation of Minister of News and Information of the People' s Republic of China Mr Wu Jichuan, a two-member delegation led by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin left here this morning for PRC to study communication services and factories that produce communication equipment.

The delegation was seen off at the airport by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Commercial Counsellor Mr Lin Jian, officials of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, Directorate of Posts and Telecommunications and Meteorology and Hydrology Department.

(11) Myanmar-Japan friendship cultural show wins viewers' hearty applause

YANGON, 1 June - Myanmar artistes who had staged variety dances and anyeints at Myanmar-Japan friendship cultural show in Tokyo met the Press at Yangon International Airport yesterday evening soon after arriving back from Japan.

Leader of the Myanmar cultural delegation Chairman of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon U Sein Tin and members Bogale U Tint Aung and Gita Lulin U Ko Ko explained their experiences during the show, saying the group led by Bogale U Tint Aung left here for Tokyo on 14 May and the group led by U Sein Tin on 19 May.

Twelve ladies were included in the 30-member delegation, they said.

With the cooperation of art-lovers in Japan, the delegation made preparations to stage the friendship cultural show at Nihon Kyoiku Kaikan Theatre in Tokyo, they recounted.

The show was formally opened by Myanmar Ambassador to Japan U Khin Maung Thein and Chairman of Institute of Asian Ethno-Forms and Culture Professor Mr Kaneko with a ceremony on 22 May, they said.

Myanmar artistes staged variety dances and anyeints in the presence of relatives of the royal family of Japan, officials of the Japanese government, ambassadors and Myanmars who were living in Japan at the theatre on 22 and 23 May, winning the hearty applause of the audience, they recalled.

The show achieved cent per cent success due to the goodwill assistance rendered by Japanese officials, the Myanmar Ambassador and staff and Myanmars residing in Japan, they said.

However, the permission to present the fourth and final day programme was revoked by authorities as there was some arrest caused by about two Myanmars at the end of the third day performance, they recounted.

The two who were residing in Japan disturbed the performance under the pretext of human rights and democracy which led to a melee with the audience, they added.

They also replied to queries raised by Patron of Myanmar Foreign Correspondent Club U Sein Win of Kyodo, U Zaw Than of Sankei, Adviser to the News and Periodicals Enterprise U Maung Maung Nyo, U Thurein Hla Htwe of Nihon Keizai Shimbun and U Khin Maung Myint of NHK.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, journalists led by Managing Director of NPE U Tin Kha, the patron of MFCC, President U Sao Kai Hpa and member journalists, Charge d'Affaires ai of Japanese Embassy Mr Yoshi Kamo and staff and officials.

The Press meet ended at 7.45 pm.

(12) Over 50,000 eligible voters of Kawhmu submit declarations expressing no confidence in NLD representative elect U Ba Swe (Myaungmya)

YANGON, 1 June - Over 50,000 eligible voters of Kawhmu Township Constituency of Yangon South District, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Ba Swe (Myaungmya) who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Kawhmu Township Constituency and no support for him at the rallies held at the sports ground of Aphyauk Village in Alechan station and Mahseseik Village of Anaukchan station of the township on 6 May morning.

Over 10,000 local people of eight wards and 22 villages from Ashaychan and Alechan stations rallied at Aphyauk Village of Alechan Station of the township

Retired personnel of Cooperative Department U Sein Myint of Aphyauk Village, on behalf of the voters from Alechan and Ashaychan stations, expressed no confidence in U Ba Swe (Myaungmya) of National League for Democracy and no support for him. Afterwards, merchant U Ohn Myint of Zaloakgyi Village and farmer U Kyi San of Wabalaukthauk Village, on behalf of the voters, presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Ba Swe (Myaungmya) and no support for him signed by 37,473 eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Law Officer Daw Aye Aye Myint.

Similarly over 10,000 local people of 18 villages attended the rally at the sports ground of Mahseseik Village in Anaukchan station of the township.

(13) 27 members resign from Padaung Township NLD

YANGON, 1 June - Twenty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Padaung Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-seven members of Padaung Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Padaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 27 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(14) 17 members resign from Kyauktaga Township NLD

YANGON, 1 June - Seventeen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyauktaga Township, Bago Division.

Seventeen members of Kyauktaga Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volitions resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyauktaga Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 12 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
