(1)  International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Council holds meeting

YANGON, 21 May - The International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Council held its Meeting No 1/99 at the university in Mayangon Township this afternoon.

Present at the meeting were Rector Sayadaw of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Silanandabhivamsa, Pro-Rector Sayadaw Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Dr Bhaddanta Neminda, department head Sayadaws, Chairman of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Council Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, vice Chairman Deputy Minister U Aung Khin, and members of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Council.

In his supplications to the Sayadaws, Maj-Gen Sein Htwa said the university is new and there were some difficulties in implementing tasks, and all difficulties were overcome.

Now that the first half-term test had been held and courses will reopen on 1 June for the second half, he said.

Secretary of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Council Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana U San Lwin explained the work project for 1999 and time-tables for courses.

Afterwards, the meeting approved the curricula and contents of the Buddha Dhamma Diploma Course (1998-99), first-year BA Course (2000-2001) and second-year BA Course (2001-2002), and regulations of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University.

(2)  Minister receives Japanese delegation

YANGON, 21 May - Minister for Education U Than Aung received Director Mr Shigeru Aoyagi and Program Technician Ms Saori Kando of (ACCU) of Japan at his office this morning.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Dr Than Nyunt, Chairman of Myanmar Education Research Bureau U Myint Han, Director-General U Bo Win of Education Planning and Training Department, Director-General Col Thein Aung of No 3 Basic Education Department and officials.

(3)  Minister receives GM of Mitsui & Co Ltd

YANGON, 21 May - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Office Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received General Manager Mr Susumu Takaku of Mitsui & Co Ltd of Japan and party who called at his office at 11 am.

Also present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(4)  Minister meets Ambassador of PRC

YANGON, 21 May - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and party who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Similarly, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Chairman of Korea Corporation of Republic of Korea Mr Tae Souk, Song and party who called at his office at 11 am today.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.

(5)  Commander attends tree planting ceremony in Mandalay

YANGON, 21 May - The tree planting ceremony organized by Mandalay Division Work Committee for Women's Affairs was held along 66th Street between Theikpan and Ngushwewah Streets in Chanmyathazi Township on 19 May morning.

Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint presented prizes to the outstanding trainees.

Altogether 17 trainees attended the six-month course.

The commander and party attended spoken English course for families of Mandalay Station of the Central Commander at Basic Education High School No 18 in Nanmyo.

(6)  The National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA) held its ninth Session

YANGON, 21 May - The National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA) held its ninth Session at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning. It was presided by Chairman of NCEA Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and attended by members of the Commission, invited guests and officials of NCEA Office.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said he was pleased to assume the responsibilities as the Chairman of NCEA and would make every effort to implement the objectives of the Commission and would like to urge the Commission members to give necessary support and cooperation. He also said that the Commission members should freely give their views and suggestions to effectively carry out the environmental protection activities. The Minister stressed that the NCEA has done its utmost in environmental protection endeavors including the formulation of Myanmar Agenda 21. The Commission with the support and cooperation of the sectoral ministries has also completed the Asia Least-Cost greenhouse Gas Abatement Strategy (ALGAS) which was sponsored by the Asian Development Bank.

Presently, the NCEA is initiating the drafting of the Environmental Protection Laws and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Law. As environmental stress is gradually being felt in the country, it is crucial that systematic environmental management should be carried out.

(7)  Thettan Yadana General Economic Cooperative Syndicate Ltd holds annual meeting

YANGON, 21 May - Thettan Yadana General Economic Cooperative Syndicate Ltd held annual meeting at the Ministry of Cooperatives this morning.

It was attended by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Director-General of Cottage Industries Department Col Sein Than, Deputy Director-General of Cooperative Department U Than Aung, Adviser Dr Than Htaik and officials.

Making a speech on the occasion, he expressed appreciation for formation of the syndicate by the personnel of Cooperative Department sharing the same view for staff welfare.

(8)  Power-tillers demonstrated in Pathein

YANGON, 21 May - The Agricultural Mechanization Department demonstrated the capacity of power-tillers at a farm in Pathein Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 20 May.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council officials, guests and local farmers.

Deputy Director of AMD U Kyin Than explained the capabilities of Leya-12 and Leya-16 power-tillers manufactured by AMD, Ayeya-l power-tiller produced by Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries and other power-tillers assembled by private companies.

(9)  Yangon Command Commander's Trophy Soccer opens

YANGON, 21 May - The 1999 Yangon Command Commander's Trophy Soccer Tournament was opened at the Yangon Command Sports Ground in Mingaladon today.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than delivered the opening address and opened the tournament.

Altogether 20 teams are taking part in it. The opening day match was between No 323 Supply and Transport Battalion and the Central Medical Depot.

(10)  Commander attends renovation of stairway, laying cornerstone of Shwethalyaung Pagoda's archway in Bago

YANGON, 21 May-A ceremony to renovate eastern stairway and to lay cornerstone for the archway of Shwethalyaung Buddha image was held at the pagoda in Bago on 20 May morning.

The commander and officials took the designated positions at the ceremony to lay cornerstone for the archway of the pagoda.

Commander Brig-Gen Tin Aye enshrined the silver casket containing nine jewellery items. Then, the commander and officials sprinkled scented water on the decorated bricks.

After blowing of conch shells and beating of royal drum and gong, the commander and party performed the rituals of golden and silver showers.

(11)  37th Meeting of ASEAN COST successfully concludes

YANGON, 21 May - The 37th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee of Science and Technology (COST) continued for the third and final day at the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning and successfully concluded in the afternoon.

Present at the meeting were Chairman of the 37th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology Chairman of Science and Technology Committee of Singapore Mr Chong Lit Cheong, chairmen of science and technology committees of the ASEAN member countries and members and representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat.

The meeting reviewed its accomplishments and discussed the planning for implementation of the Hanoi Plan of Action.

The participants discussed successful completion of seven projects in various areas of regional cooperation in science and technology- telecommunications training, multimedia archive development, energy co-generation from biomes resources, natural gas utilization in transport, coastal zone environment and research management and remote sensing and geographic information systems.

The meeting agreed to prepare a strategic plan for implementing its programmes and other science and technology-based activities that are included in the Hanoi Plan of Action adopted by the Sixth ASEAN Summit held in Hanoi in December 1998.

They decided that recognizing the need to assist the new ASEAN member countries to be more rapidly integrated into the mainstream of science and technology cooperation in the region, COST will put together human resources development packages designed to strengthen science and technology institutions in the new member countries. As a start, training in food science and technology will be offered by Thailand to Myanmar. The new member countries have started taking significant roles in regional science and technology cooperation by assuming the chairmanships of certain sub-committees. Myanmar will be the chairman of the Sub-committee on Food Science and Technology from July 1999 to June 2002, while Lao PDR will be the chairman of the Sub-committee on Non-conventional Energy Research during the same period.

(13)  Exercise books for national race students of Monastic Education Schools

YANGON, 21 May - Well-wisher Mr Koyasan from Japan and members of Japanese War Veterans Organization donated 20,000 exercise books for national race students of Monastic Education Schools from States in Myanmar at State Sangha Maha Nayaka Kyaungdawgyi on Kaba Aye Hill this morning.

Then, well-wisher Mr Nakashita Zuiho presented 20,000 exercise books worth K 700,000 to Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

Then, Mr Nakashita Zuiho presented 500 books of code of conducts of members of the Sangha to Bhaddanta Sobhita.

Director-General U Arnt Maung accepted the donations.

(14)  Amphetamine tablets seized in Mandalay

YANGON, 21 May - Amphetamine tablets numbering 69,000 were seized in Shwephoneshein Ward, 85th Street, between 42nd and 43rd Streets, Maha Aungmyay Township, Mandalay, on 14 May.

Acting on tip-off, the local intelligence unit personnel waited and nabbed Thang Chein Huan, son of U Thang Tei Kuei and his elder brother Thang Chein Hsu who came to sell the amphetamine tablets at U Yan Kwei Ann's place in plot No 828.

Action is being taken against them.

(15)  65 members resign from Singaing Township NLD

YANGON, 21 May - Sixty-five members resigned from National League for Democracy of Singaing Township, Mandalay Division.

Sixty-five members of Singaing Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Singaing Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 23 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

YANGON, 21 May - Women's Basic Fire Fighting Course 8/99 sponsored by the Fire Services Department concluded at the parade ground of Fire Fighting Training School in Mayangon Township this morning.
