(1) 58th cash donation for construction of Buddha's Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon)

YANGON, 20 May - The 58th cash donation ceremony for the construction projects of Buddha's Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon) was held on the platform of the pagoda this afternoon, attended by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

Vice-Chairman Sayadaw of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Acindabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.

Members of the Board of Trustees presented over 717,000 to Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister U Aung Khin, Director-General and officials.

Joint-Secretary Sayadaw of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Labasami delivered a sermon.

(2) Minister meets Adviser of Soyea Corporation

YANGON, 20 May - Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San met Adviser of Soyea Corporation of Republic of Korea Mr Kim Kyung Ho and party who called at his office at 3 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Director-General U Than Aung of Cooperative Department, Director-General Col Sein Than of Cottage Industries Department, General Manager U Myo Than of Cooperatives Export Import Enterprise, Adviser Dr Than Htaik and officials.

(3) 37th Meeting of ASEAN COST continues

YANGON, 19 May - The 37th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology was held at Sedona Hotel for the second day.

The meeting delved into the discussions of the 8th Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers for Science and Technology, review of the ASEAN Science Fund, update on the ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development, framework for enhancement of cooperation on space technology, preparations for rotation of chairmanship of the COST and subcommittees, and general matters.

(4) Minister leaves for Lao PDR to attend Drug Abuse Control Ministerial Meeting

YANGON, 20 May - Myanmar delegation led by Vice-Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affair Col Thein Nyunt left here by air for Lao People's Democratic Republic this morning to attend the Drug Abuse Control Ministerial Meeting of MOU six countries to be held on 21 May in Vientiane.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe and officials.

Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Deputy Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Lt-Col Myint Swe, Director Police Col Khan Aung of the Office of CCDAC left here by air for Laos on 17 May to attend the Drug Abuse Control senior officials meeting of MOU six countries.

(5) Audio visual teaching aids for National Defence College

YANGON, 20 May - The 28 Myanma business entrepreneurs donated audio visual teaching aids worth K 5,245,860 to National Defence College at Konemyinttha this morning.

On behalf of the business entrepreneurs, Managing-Director of MGS U Thein Tun and Chairman of Dagon Agriculture Group U Win Aung presented audio visual teaching aids to Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung who presented certificate of honour to them.

(6) ASEAN Friendship Overland Expedition tourists arrive Mandalay

YANGON, 20 May - The Second ASEAN Friendship Overland Expedition comprising tourists from Malaysia arrived at Mandalay today after their long journey in Myanmar which began from Myawady where they entered the country via Thailand on 13 May.

The next day, tourists had a wonderful sightseeing in Bagan, the showcase of ancient Myanmar cultural heritage, on 18 May before visiting Popa Taungkalat, a flat topped hill formed by volcanic lava many many years ago.

Their overland tour programme in Myanmar also includes tourist destinations such as Meikhtila, a town by the Meikhtila Lake in central Myanmar, and Innlay, a scenic lake on Shan plateau famous for its leg-rowers.

Co-sponsored by Myanmar Travels and Tours of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and Royal Perak Motor Club of Malaysia, the expedition left Malaysia at 10 May and had a two-day journey crossing Thailand to Myawady.

The 32 tourists arrived at Yangon on 14 May after completing their visits in Hpa-an and Kyaikhtiyoe Pagoda.

They will leave the country from the Myawady point on 24 May.

(7) Commander inspects agriculture, construction projects in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 20 May - Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, accompanied by departmental officials and staff officers, inspected reclamation of land for cultivation and construction of roads and bridges in Myaungmya, Maubin and Pyapon Districts on 16 May. While inspecting the fallow and vacant lands to be reclaimed for cultivation, the commander heard reports on the tasks for expansion of monsoon and summer paddy cultivation, reclamation of vacant and fallow lands and left necessary instructions.

The commander and party next proceeded to Thabaung Village in Bogalay Township, Pyapon District, and inspected construction of Bogalay-Kadonkani Road.

Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Myint reported to him on construction of the road.

The commander gave suggestions on completion of the road, work-site safety and regional development.

(8) Teak plantation, dams inspected in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 20 May - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by officials, inspected the teak plantations near Mile Post No 376/5 on Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Wundwin Township on 17 May.

Chairman of Meikhtila District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Myint reported to him on completion of planting of 437 teak trees and future programmes.

On 18 May, the commander toured Kyetmauktaung Dam and Pin Creek Dam and irrigation projects.

(9) K 500,000 for CCDAC

YANGON, 20 May - Mawlamyine Trading Co Ltd presented K 500,000 to the trust fund of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control of the Ministry of Home Affairs this afternoon.

Managing Director of the company U Soe Than handed over the cash to Chairman of CCDAC Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing at the ministry.

The minister spoke words of thanks.

(10) CEC member of USDA gives talks on propagation of Union Spirit

YANGON, 20 May - Member of Central Executive Committee of Union Solidarity and Development Association Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein gave talks on propagation of the Union Spirit at Multiplier Management Course No 5/99 for USDA executives in Hline Township this morning and at Multiplier Management Course No 7/99 for USDA executives in Bahan Township in the afternoon.

(11) Commander and minister inspect regional Development in Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 20 May - Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, accompanied by Secretary of Leading Committee for Region-wise Development of Agriculture Sector Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and officials, inspected construction of bridge linking Tamoke Village and Lut Lut Village in Myeik Township yesterday morning.

The Commander, the Minister and party inspected cultivation of oil palm 300 acres by Coastal Region Command, cultivation of rubber by Ventage Co and construction of pier and approach structure for Tapo bailey bridge in Palaw Township constructed by Coastal Region Command and fulfilled the requirements.

The Commander, the Minister and party also inspected construction of Aungmyo Palaza in Palaw and the Commander presented gifts to villages between the Palaw and Dawei Townships.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung met officials of Road Transport and Transport Planning Department in the evening.

The Commander, the Minister and party inspected the palm oil factory of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise in Pugawzun Village in Yebyu Township this morning.

(12) Athletes in international sports tourneys honoured

YANGON, 20 May - Athletes who won prizes in international sports tournaments were honoured at the National Indoor Stadium l in Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township, this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, officials of the Ministry of Sports, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, presidents of sports federations, guests and well-wishers

The minister made a speech on the occasion.

Then, he presented prizes to Ma Khin Swe Oo, who won gold in women's penn weight class of International Invitational Taekwondo Tourney held in Hanoi, Vietnam, and Soe Soe Mya, who won gold in flyweight class, and their coach and Aung Naing who won gold in 60-kilo class of Third South-East Asia Body Building Championship and Zaw Thein Naing who won silver in 75-kilo Class.

Vice-Chairman of MOC Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo presented prizes to Naing Win who won silver in 55-kilo Class of the Third South-East Asia Body Building Championship and Win Lwin who won silver in 60-kilo Class and Tun Tun Oo who won silver in 65-kilo class.

Prizes also went to Khaing Lin who won bronze in 90-kilo Class and coach U Tin Maung Swe.

Myanmar Daewoo Co presented K 100,000 each the two women's Taekwondo athletes, Myanmar Taekwondo Federation one tackle of gold each and K 50,000 to the coach, Yuzana Co Ltd K 50,000 each and U Mya Han of Fortune Co K 50,000 each.

U Kyee Sein of Shwe Thazin Co also presented K 50,000 each to the two. Myanmar Daewoo Co donated 3500 FECs for the cost of accommodation and meal for the two who will undergo training in Korea for two weeks.

On behalf of the athletes, Soe Soe Mya expressed thanks for the prizes.

The committee for Ensuring Success of Myanmar Sports also presented K 100,000 for gold medallist, K 75,000 for silver medallist and K 50,000 for bronze medallist and K 20,000 for coach.

(13) Talks held to hail Myanmar Women's Day

YANGON, 20 May - Thakayta Township Working Committee for Women's Affairs held a talk at Thakayta Township No 1 Basic Education High School this morning to hail Myanmar Women's Day which falls on July.

Present on the occasion were the chairman and members of Township Peace and Development Council, members of Township USDA and Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, women's members of Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and officials.

The township medical officer, the deputy township law officer and the secretary of the working committee lectured on women's affairs.

Subject: Permission given to U Sein Bo to resign as Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected from  Myawady Township Constituency in Kayin State

1. U Sein Bo of the National League for Democracy, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected at the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Myawady Township Constituency in Kayin State, submitted of his own volition to this Commission that he be permitted to resign because of ill health.

2. Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that U Sein Bo has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Myawady Constituency effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

(15) 32 members resign from Myeik Township NLD

YANGON, 20 May - Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myeik Township, Taninthayi Division.

Thirty-two members of Myeik Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myeik Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 2 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(16) 16 members resign from Gyobingauk Township NLD

YANGON, 20 May - Sixteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Gyobingauk Township, Bago Division.

Sixteen members of Gyobingauk Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Gyobingauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 30 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
