(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and delegation leave for Thailand

YANGON, 8 Mar - At the invitation of Prime Minister of Thailand Mr Chuan Leekpai, Myanmar goodwill delegation led by State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe left for Thailand by air at 7.30 am today.

State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and delegation were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of the Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, senior military officers, Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and heads and resident representatives of the embassies and UN agencies, Charge d'Affaires ai of the Royal Thai Embassy Mr Raden Suwannakorn and officials.

(2)  New modern fish wholesale centre to be built in Myeik

YANGON, 8 Mar - A meeting to coordinate building of an international level fish wholesale centre in Myeik, Taninthayi Division, was held in a meeting hall of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries this afternoon attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for L&F U Aung Thein, heads of the State Peace and Development Council office and the respective departments and officials of OEM (M) Co Ltd which will build the centre.

(3)  Secretary-2 attends prize-giving ceremony for IQ test of pre-primary school children

YANGON, 8 Mar - A prize-giving ceremony for IQ test of the children of the pre-primary schools of the Social Welfare Department and for the 28th International Children's Art Competition was held at Bahan Pre-Primary School No 1 on Kanbawza Yeiktha Street this afternoon. attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and wife Daw Aye Pyi Wai Khin, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Vice-Chairperson of the National Working Committee for Women' s Affairs Dr Daw May May Yi, Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sitt Myaing, directors-general of the departments under the ministry, officials, pre-primary school heads, teachers and parents.

First, the Secretary-2 made a speech.

Then, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Dr Daw May May Yi also delivered addresses.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented the first prize in all-round competition to No 1 Pre-Primary School, the second prize to No 5 Pre-Primary School and the third prize to No 6 Pre-Primary School.

Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone also presented the first prize in the inter-school capability contest to No I Pre-Primary School. the second prize to Thuwunna Pre-Primary School and the third prize to No 5 Pre-Primary School, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein the first prize in IQ test to No 1 Pre-Primary School, the second prize to No 5 Pre-Primary School and the third prize to No-2 Pre-Primary School, and Deputy U Soe Nyunt prizes to the gold, silver and bronze medal winners in the 28th International Children's Art Competition held in Japan.

(4)  International Women's Day observed

YANGON, 8 Mar - The International Women's Day was observed at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road today with an address by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the International Women's Day Chairman of the National Committee for Women's Affairs Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Deputy Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye patrons of Myanmar Naing Ngan Women's Sports Federation, members of the National Committee for Women's Affairs, members of the Working Committee, departmental heads, wives of the Ambassadors of ASEAN member nations, diplomats of the embassies, resident representatives of UN agencies, chairmen and officials of NGOs, members of the Leading Committee for Observance of the International Women's Day and subcommittees, and guests.

(5)  University for Development of National Races holds eighth convocation

YANGON, 8 Mar - The eighth convocation of the University for Development of National Races was held in the Convocation Hall of the UDNR at Ywathitgyi, Sagaing yesterday.

It was attended by Chairman of the University Council Commander of the North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, Chairman of the Civil Service Selection and Training Board and the UDNR Central Management Committee U Maung Maung Gyi, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun, members of PSSTB U Aung Myint and U Kaung Nyunt, Commander of No 33 Light Infantry Division Col Win Myint, members of the University Council, Director-General of the Civil Service Selection and Training Department U Myint Thein, Director-General of the Civil Service Affairs Department U Khin Maung Myint and officials Rector of UDNR Col Zaw Min Thein graduates and their relatives.

(6)  32 members resign from Thaton Township NLD

YANGON, 8 Mar - Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Thaton Township, Mon State.

Twenty-nine members of Thaton Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thaton Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 11 February 1999, three members followed suit on 15 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(7)  106 members resign from Myanaung Township NLD

YANGON, 8 Mar - One hundred and six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myanaung Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Sixty-three members of Myanaung Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myanaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 11 January 1999, thirty-five and eight members followed suit on 15 January 1999 and 29 January 1999 respectively as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(8)  Minister inspects Okkan Sugar Mill

YANGON, 8 Mar - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by officials, arrived at Okkan Sugar Mill near Gonnyindan Village, Taikkyi Township, Yangon Division, yesterday. The mill is on test-run and can crush 2,000 tons of sugarcane a day.

The minister and members of Township Peace and Development Council, division level officials and officials of Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise discussed running of the mill.

The managing director of MSE reported on construction of the mill and test-running of the mill and the officials reported on the plan to cultivate over 15,000 acres of sugarcane on the area of the mill with the aid of charts.

The minister laid down tasks to be undertaken on water and power supply, sewerage water, sugarcane purchasing and extension of sugarcane cultivation.

They then inspected production process of the mill.

(9)  UDNR University Council holds Meeting

YANGON, 8 Mar - The University Council of the University for Development of National Races held Meeting No 1/99 in the UDNR meeting hall on 6 March.

It was attended by Chairman of the University Council Commander of the North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win and members, Rector of UDNR Col Zaw Min Thein, the Pro-Rector and officials.

In his address, Maj-Gen Soe Win said the duration of the regular primary school teachership course has been reduced from four years to three years in accord with the educational reforms, and there will be opportunities for those who have completed the regular teachership course and been in service for the designated years to attend the Education Diploma Course and the Course for B.Ed degree without taking entrance examination.

He said the graduates of the university will have to serve as the education employees and the brilliant ones will be allowed to attend the vocational institutes to be able to work as health employees and scholars in order to contribute to greater development of the border regions' social and economic sectors.

He noted plans were systematically laid down for upgrading the systems of the university and invited appropriate suggestions.

A general round of discussions followed.

(10)  Chief of Staff (Army) inspects Tatmadaw columns of 54th Armed Forces Day Parade

YANGON, 8 Mar - Chairman of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Leading Organizing Committee Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo this morning inspected companies, hostels and messes of Hsinbyushin, Kyansittha and Bandoola columns that will take part in the Armed Forces Day Parade.

Accompanied by Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, senior officers of the Ministry of Defence, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and officials, Lt-Gen Tin Oo arrived at a hostel in Maintenance Air Base at Mingaladon where Tatmadaw members of the Hsinbyushin column are staying.

Commandant of the Base Col Khin Maung Aye reported on accommodation of members of the companies of the column and arrangements being made to ensure water and power supply, Parade Commander Col Aung Min on progress of practising of the columns and Commander of Hsinbyushin Column Col Maung Maung Shwe on matters of his column.

The Chief of Staff (Army) and party inspected the Office of the Hsinbyushin Column, Public Relations Camp opened by Directorate of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare and the mess.

They then inspected hostels of the parade company representing the South-West Command and the parlour, hostels, the dispensary and the mess of the Guard of Honour Company representing the Tatmadaw (Air).

The Chief of Staff (Army) met Tatmadaw members of the Hsinbyushin Column at the parade ground of the Base.

He said Tatmadaw members of the parade columns should try their utmost to uplift their parading skills as the Armed Forces Day Parade will be watched by the national races and foreign observers. They must show the fine traditions of the Tatmadaw with unity. As all Tatmadaw members possess basic skills they should strive to uplift the dignity of their commands and the Tatmadaw.

Concerning discipline, the Chief of Staff (Army) said discipline is the backbone of the Tatmadaw, which should be observed by the men, the companies and the columns.

At the Sports Grounds of Yangon Command, the Chief of Staff (Army) met Tatmadaw members of Kyansittha and Bandoola columns.

The Chief of Staff (Army) and party inspected hostels, toilets, kitchens, mess of the two columns.

Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director of Supply and Transport Brig-Gen Tin Tun, Commander of Kyansittha Column Col Sein Tin Win and Lt-Col Aung Thein of Yangon Command reported on administration and welfare of the columns.

The Chief of Staff (Army) looked into their requirements.

(11)  Malaysian delegation members and UMCCI hold meeting

YANGON, 8 Mar - A 22-member Malaysian entrepreneur delegation led by Chairman of Sibu Chamber of Importers Exporters and Wholesalers Mr Wong Do Yon of Sarawak Province of Malaysia arrived at Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry Office on Merchant Street this morning. They were welcomed by Chairman of UMCCI U Khin Maung Yi and Central Executive Committee members and Myanmar entrepreneurs.

U Khin Maung Yi explained the situation of UMCCI, investment, economic and trading opportunities.

They discussed trade and exchanged gifts.
