(1) Multi-Media classrooms opened in Kamayut, Ahlon

YANGON, 14 Feb - Multimedia classrooms were opened at No 1 Basic Education High School in Kamayut Town ship and No 4 Basic Education High School in Ahlon Township this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the opening ceremonies were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department Col Thein Aung, Town-ship Education Officers, patrons and members of School Board of Trustees, members of Parent-Teacher Association, school heads, teachers, students, donors and guests.

Multi-media classroom was opened at No 1 Basic Education High School on U Wisara Road in Kamayut. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the computer room multi-media room and drawing room.

Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Yan Naung Htut reported on formation of School Board of Trustees and measures undertaken for education promotion programmes.

Headmistress Daw Myint Myint reported on the multimedia classroom.

The Secretary-1 then signed in the visitors' book. The Secretary-1 posed for souvenir photo with members of the School Board of Trustees and the headmistress.

The Secretary-1 and party went to No 4 BEHS in Ahlon where they inspected multimedia classroom and drawing room.

A multi-media teaching centre was then opened at Aung San Hall.

Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Kan Htoo reported on work done for education promotion programme.

Headmistress Daw Khin May Win reported on the teaching centre.

Next, old student U Myat Kaung (Mikko Coffee Mix) and family donated K 2.5 million for school trust fund, U Thant Zin (Amay Ein Lottery) K 300,000, old student U Khin Maung Aye and party (Golden Power Co Ltd) K 230,000, U Aung Tin (Kengtung Confectionery) K 225,000, U Kan Htoo K 200,000 and Daw Sein Hlaing and U Aye Myint K 100,000 cash.

Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Kan Htoo and member U Soe Win accepted the donations.

The Secretary-1 then signed in the visitors' book. The Secretary-1 posed for souvenir photo with members of the School Board of Trustees, the headmistress and donors.

In meeting with members of the School Board of Trustees, school heads and teachers, the Secretary-1 said multimedia classrooms which are important in implementation of education promotion programme came at basic education schools with momentum due to the leadership of the teachers, industry of the students and assistance of the School Board of Trustees.

He said these classrooms are of significance in the education promotion programme. Learning in the past was formal way. Students are now being trained with the use of. modern equipment at multimedia classrooms of all-round development, he added.

He expressed his satisfaction at students' brilliant performance at the Multi-media classrooms not long after computer-aided teaching methods began at the basic education school.

Looking at the brilliant skill of the students, the Secretary-1 saw better prospects of future education in Myanmar. Modern education system of international standard will surely emerge in the future, he said.

(2) Secretary-l receives national race leader of Northern Shan State Special Region-4

YANGON, 14 Feb - Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received national race leader of Northern Shan State Special Region-4 U Sai Lin and members U Kyi Myint and U Min Ein at the Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 4 pm today.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Chief of the Office of the Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win Director General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department and officials.

They discussed development of commerce, education, transport and tourism and regional development.

(3) Secretary-l inspects renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 14 Feb - Patron of Shwedagon Pagoda General Renovation Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials. of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the southern stairway of the Shwedagon Pagoda this morning.

The Secretary-1 was welcomed by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Chairman of Loading Committee for General Renovation Committee Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Chairman of Work Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and members and members of the Board of Trustees.

The Secretary-1 first paid respects to Padamya Myetshin Pagoda on upper terrace. The Secretary-1 and Myanmar engineers and technicians ascended the pagoda and paid respects to the Htidaw atop.

The Secretary-1 inspected installation of steel frames for durability of the Htidaw. Engineers and technicians reported on work being undertaken with the use of modern techniques and equipment.

Next, the Secretary-1 inspected renovation of religious buildings on the pagoda platform.

(4) Seminar on Y2K Challenges in Military held at IBC

YANGON, 14 Feb - The Seminar on Y2K Challenges in Military organized by the Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) Computer Department with the guidance of the Office of the Commander in-Chief (Army) was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this afternoon with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Military Appointment-General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of the Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, directors and deputy directors of the Directorates of the Ministry of Defence, departmental heads, computer experts and technicians, guests and resource persons.

(5) 108 members resign from Bahan Township NLD

YANGON, 14 Feb - One hundred and eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Bahan Township, Yangon Division.

One hundred and eight members of Bahan Township NLD, Yangon Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Bahan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 14 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(6) 61 members resign from Yenangyaung Township NLD

YANGON, 14 Feb - Sixty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yenangyaung Township, Magway Division.

Sixty-one members of Yenangyaung Township NLD, Magway Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Yenangyaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 25 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party 'politics of NLD.

(7) UDE's intensive courses, examination centres announced

YANGON, 14 Feb - The department concerned announced universities, degree colleges and colleges where intensive courses and examinations of the University of Distance Education for 1998-99 academic year will be conducted.

Intensive courses and examinations for arts majors who have registered at the branches of Yangon University of Distance Education will be conducted at respective universities, degree collages and colleges; intensive courses and examinations for History, Philosophy and Psychology majors who have registered at Yangon University of Distance Education, will be conducted at Hline College, for Myanmar majors at Kyimyindine College and for Geography majors at Botahtaung College.

Examinations for science majors who have registered at branches of the Yangon University of Distance Education will be conducted at respective universities, decree colleges and colleges; examinations for all the science majors who have registered at Yangon University of Distance Education will be conducted at Yangon University (Main).

Intensive courses and examinations for all the law majors who have registered at Yangon University of Distance Education will be conducted at Yangon University (Main) and for the first year law majors who have registered at Dagon University, Mawlamyine University Pathein University and Sittway University at the respective universities.

Intensive courses and examinations for all the economic majors who have registered at Yangon University of Distance Education will be conducted at Yangon Institute of Economics and for the first year economic majors who have registered at Dagon University, Mawlamyine University, Pathein University and Sittway University at the respective universities.

(8) Computer Diploma Course opened, Basic Accountancy Course concluded in Sagaing Division

YANGON, 14 Feb - A ceremony to open Computer Diploma Course No 1 and to conclude Basic Accountancy Course No 2 was held in the meeting hall of Sagaing Division Union Solidarity and Development Association on 9 February.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Patron of Sagaing Division USDA Commander of North West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, member of the Secretariat of USDA Minister for Culture U Win Sein attended the ceremony and presented certificates to the trainees.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Htut and members, district and township authorities, division-level departmental personnel, course instructors, Secretary of Sagaing Division USDA Daw Moe Moe Thein and members of the executive committee, trainees of Kalay, Katha, Khamti, Sagaing, Tamu, Mawlaik, Monywa and Shwebo Districts and guests.

(9) Graduation held at Thameikdawdara Thukhitarama Nunnery

YANGON, 14 Feb - The 55th Saddhammadhaja Argama Thabawa Hnithtana Graduation Ceremony of Thameikdawdara Thukhitayama Daw Nyanasari Myanaung Nunnery was held at the Sarthintaik in Sangyoung Township this afternoon.

Member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Wuntho Kyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Silawa administered the Nine Precepts.

Dr Tin Shwe supplicated on the aim of examination.

Officials presented offertories to the Sayadaws and nuns.

Then, Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Daw Khin Mar Aye, wife of Minister for Energy, and Daw Khin Aye, wife of Minister for Religious Affairs, and officials presented prizes to the nuns who passed the Dharnmacariya, Pahtamagyi Pahtamalat, Pahtamange and basic course examinations.

Shwebomyo Pakhan Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Vimalabhivamsa delivered a sermon.

(10)  'Soon' offered to presiding Sayadaws of Sarthintaiks

YANGON, 14 Feb - Under the auspices of the Chairman of Lanmadaw Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Bhaddanta Naninda, Secretary Bhaddanta Eindavamsa, Bhaddanta Kundhala and Bhaddanta Visuddhanana of Thayetaw Pariyati Alekyaung Sarthintaik, Dr Daw Mya Mya Win and family offered 'soon' to the presiding Sayadaws of 70 Pariyatti Sarthintaiks at Alekyaungtaik in the compound of Thayeiawtaik this morning.

This was followed by reciting of parittas by members of the Sangha and sharing of merits gained.

(11) Myanmar health delegation leaves for India

YANGON, 14 Feb - Myanmar health delegation led by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo left here by air this evening for India to attend the fourth health meeting of South East Asian Countries to be held from 15 to 17 February in New Delhi.

The meeting is sponsored by the WHO.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, officials of WHO Office in Yangon, heads of department, officials of the ministry and relatives.

The deputy minister was accompanied by Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung.

(12) Cash donations by Myanmar-Muslim National Affairs Association

YANGON, 14 Feb - The get-together of all religious faiths sponsored by Myanmar-Muslim National Affairs Association took place at Central Hotel, here this morning in conjunction with a ceremony to present prizes as a gesture honouring the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

Representatives-from all religious faiths greetings.

Cash donations were made to Committee for Observance of the 54 Anniversary Armed Forces Day, Myanmar Writers & Journalists Association, Nyeinchan Thaya Orphanage in Thakayta, Muslim Home for the Aged and Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation.
