(1) Secretary-1 attends ceremony to hand new building of Basic Education Primary School in Tamway

YANGON, 13 Jan - A Ceremony to hand over new building of No 34 Basic Education Primary School to education department was held at the school in 154th Street in Tamway Township this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, departmental officials, guests, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, headmistress, teachers and schoolchildren.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung formally opened the new building.

Girl students of No 4 Basic Education High School, Tamway, performed pom pom dances with band troupe.

Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw presented related documents to Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department Col Thein Aung.

Next, Head of Urban Planning and Land Management Department of Yangon City Development U Tun Than Tun presented land grant to Col Thein Aung.

Managing Director of Eiksitan Co Daw Thin Thin Aye also presented school requisites worth K 950,000 and related documents to Col Thein Aung and Director Daw May Thin school uniforms worth K 30,000 to Headmistress Daw Khin Thein Thein.

In meeting with the headmistress and teachers, the Secretary-1 discussed maintaining discipline from the primary level for all-round development of schoolchildren and nurturing them to bring about better foundations for spiritual development such as patriotism, Union spirit and safeguarding and cherishing of culture.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the new building.

(2) Secretary-1 receives US Congressman

YANGON, 13 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received US Congressman Mr Tony Patrick Hall and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 8.30 am today.

Present on the occasion together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and together with the guests was Charge d' Affaires ai of US Embassy Mr Kent M Wiedemann.

(3) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 13 Jan - National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of NCCC at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and commission members.

Secretary of National Convention Convening Commission reported on matters pertaining to the National Convention and to the National Convention Convening work Committee and the National Convention Management Committee.

Members of the National Convention Convening Commission took part in the discussions.

Afterwards, the meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

(4) Phensedyl, stimulant tablets seized

YANGON, 12 Jan - A total of 46 100-ml bottles of Phensedyl were seized from the house in No 2 Ward, Nan-yehsaung Village, Phakant Township, Kachin State, by a team comprising members of the regional Defence Services Intelligence unit and the police force and officials of departments concerned on 22 December.

On further investigation of Ma Khin Myint, owner of the house, 62 (100-ml) bottles of Phensedyl were seized by the team from the house of U Maung Maung (a) Tun Hla, 42, in Shwetaung Village in the same township.

Similarly, on 31 December, a combined team arrested Law Ae, 27, of ShwepyiMyo Ywathit, Nawnghkio Township, and Aik Kyan, 21, of Kawaing Village, Kunlong Township, at Lucky tea shop in Monghsu, northern Shan State, with 20,000 stimulant tablets.

Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(5) Commander inspects construction works in Sagaing Division

YANGON, 13 Jan - Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, accompanied by officials, inspected renovation of ancient pagodas in Kanbalu Township on 10 January.

He also inspected construction work in Kanbalu and then proceeded to Thaphanseik Dam Project.

Project Engineer U Maung Maung Tin reported to him on the project.

The commander also inspected the situation for carrying out the work for water supply in Taze Township.

(6) Minister inspects bridge construction in Kyaikhto

YANGON, 13 Jan - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Tint Swe and officials, inspected building of Kaw-san-naing Bridge (Bridge No 8/107) in Kyaik-hto, Mon State, yesterday.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Myint reported to the minister on the bridge project on Yangon Sittaung-Mottama Highway.

In giving instructions to officials concerned, the minister said the bridge will be a vital link on Yangon-Mawlamyine-Mottama Highway as the number of cars using the highway is increasing day after day.

On his way back to Yangon, the minister also inspected the highway.

(7) 1999 Myanmar-Mya Yeik Nyo Asian Round Badminton organizers hold meeting

YANGON, 13 Jan - The 1999 Myanmar-Mya Yeik Nyo Asian Round Badminton Contest Organizing Leading Committee, Work Committees and Sub-committees held a coordination meeting at National Indoor Stadium 1 in Thuwunna this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win.

Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, member Director of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department, Officer on Special Duty at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau, officials, President of Myanmar Badminton Federation U Kyi Nyunt, executives and guests.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win made an opening speech.

President of MBF U Kyi Nyunt explained progress of 1999 Myanmar-Mya Yeik Nyo Asian Round Badminton Contest.

Chairmen of various work committees and subcommittees reported on completion of respective sectors, tasks being carried out and work to be done.

The coordination meeting ended with remarks by Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win.

(8) Armed Forces Day novel, short story, article competitions

YANGON, 13 Jan - The 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Photo Competition Committee will hold novels, short story and article competitions.

Novels should be between 50,000 and 70,000 words and short stories between 4,000 and 8,000 words and must be based on the 12 noble traditions of the Tatmadaw.

Articles must be within 3,000 and 5,000 words.

Handsome prizes will be awarded to winners.

(9) Minister meets Executive Vice President of Delta International Co

YANGON, 13 Jan - Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Executive Vice-President of Delta International Co Mr Sohail Hameed Khan and party who called at the MIC Office at 10 am today.

Present at the call were officials of Investment and Companies Administration Department.

(10) NLD members of two more townships resign

YANGON, 13 Dec - Sixteen members of Patheingyi Township NLD, Mandalay Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Patheingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 7 January as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Sixty-four members of Nyaung-U Township NLD, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Nyaung-U Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 8 January as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11) Course on collecting data on violence against women

YANGON, 13 Jan - A three-day multiplier course on collecting data on violence against women sponsored by Chin State Committee for Women's Affairs opened in Haka Township, Chin State, on 1 January.

Secretary of Chin State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Win Naing, Patron of Chin State Working Committee for Women's Affairs Daw Aye Chit Kyaw and Chairman of the work committee U Than Win gave speeches.

Also present on the occasion were members of Chin State Peace and Development Council, division and township-level officials, course instructors and 85 girl trainees.
