(1) Finds from Nyaunggan site show existence of Bronze Age culture in Myanmar Workshop on Bronze Age culture of Nyaunggan held at IBC

YANGON, 7 Jan - The Workshop on the Bronze Age Culture of Nyaunggan jointly sponsored by the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road today, with the opening address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, for Hotels and Tourism, Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, department heads, officials of the Myanmar Historical Commission, the Universities Historical Research Centre, the Departments of Archaeology, Anthropology and Geology of Yangon University, the Department of Archaeology of the Ministry of Culture, the Department of Anatomy of the Institute of Dental Medicine, and the Department of Metallurgy of the Yangon Technological University, scholars from New Zealand, Britain, America, France, China, Singapore and Thailand, observers, local and foreign journalists and guests.

(2) Secretary-l receives Leaders Magazine Chief Editor

YANGON, 7 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chief Editor of the Leaders Magazine Mr Henry Dormann who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Present on the occasion together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(3) MIC Chairman meets Oceana Tri-Star MD

YANGON, 7 Jan - Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Managing Director of Oceana Tri-Star Industries Pte Ltd Mr Choo Hiow San and party of Singapore at his office this afternoon.

Present at the call were officials of the Government Office and MIC Office.

They discussed production of foodstuff and investment in Myanmar.

(4) Khamti Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 7 Jan - The Executive Committee members and all members of Khamti Township National League for Democracy, Sagaing Division, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 31 December 1998.

Khamti Township NLD was first formed on 5 January 1989. Fifteen EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party member-ship on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's party politics. They notified the office of Khamti Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 31 December, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(5) 51st Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition goes on

YANGON, 7 Jan - The 51st Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition continued today at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wizara Road for the fifth day.

The Tatmadaw Convention Hall was crowded with visitors who were viewing the exhibits with keen interest.

The visitors included members of the Sangha, people from various organizations and foreigners.

Visitors to the exhibition can have a chance to win K 50,000 prize through taking part in the quiz on general knowledge there. The prize winners will be announced through newspapers one week after conclusion of the exhibition.

Besides, book shops of the News and Periodicals Enterprise, the Printing and Publishing Enterprise, Myawady Literature House and the Religious Affairs Department are selling a wide range of books at reasonable prices there.

The exhibition will continue till 11 January.

(6) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 7 Jan - One hundred and seventy-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kungyangon Township, Yangon Division, on 31 December.

One hundred and seventy-four members of Kungyangon Township NLD, Yangon Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Kungyangon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 31 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(7) Construction of Gyaing Bridge in progress

YANGON, 7 Jan - Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Aung inspected construction of the bridge across Gyaing River at Zathabyin on 5 January.

Accompanied by Commander of Mawrawady Naval Region Command Headquarters Commodore Thein Ngwe and officials, he heard a report on progress of work and phase by phase construction of the bridge and Kawkareik-Kawpari-Zathabyin Road presented by Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Saw Khin Soe and officials.

The 1,900-foot suspension bridge will link Mon and Kayin states. Construction of the approach roads have been completed.

The commander and party inspected reclamation of 300 acres at Khayongu, Kyaikmaraw Township, to cultivate paddy.

(8) Myanmar disabled sports contingent leaves for Bangkok

YANGON, 7 Jan - Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win saw off at Yangon International Airport this morning Myanmar disabled sports contingent led by Lt-Col Win Maung who will take part in the VII Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled in Bangkok, Thailand.

Among those to see the contingent off were Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department, President of Myanmar Sports Federation for the Disabled Col Aung Naing, officials and relatives.

The sports contingent includes leader Lt-Col Win Maung with 39 members. They will participate in track & field, volleyball and swimming events from 10 to 16 January.

(9) Myanmar London Golf Tour continues for third day

YANGON, 7 Jan - The Third Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Professional Golfers Association (PGA-Myanmar) continued for the third day at Yangon Golf Club in Danyingon this morning.

Soe Kyaw Naing led with 221 strokes, Win Aung and Win Naing Tun with 227 each, Nay Win Myint and Maung Pyone with 232 each and Win Zaw Oo with 233 in the professional golfers event.

Women golfers took part in their final day today. In women's amateur event, Khin Khin Thu was first with 225 strokes, Yin Yin Aye second with 236 and Nu Nu Lwin third with 244.

Leading players in the men's amateur event after the third round were Zaw Zaw Latt and Aung Win with 228 strokes, Zaw Paing with 230 and Myo Khaing with 232.

Tomorrow will be the final day for professional and amateur events.

(10) Haka Township MWCA presents prizes at model mother and baby show

YANGON, 7 Jan - Honouring the 51st Anniversary Independence Day, the prize distribution ceremony of the I model mother and baby show, essay contest and mass sports activities was held in Haka, Chin State, on 4 January.

Patron of Chin State Maternal arid Child Welfare Association Daw Aye Chit Kyaw, Patron of Township MCWA Daw Mya Mya Aye and officials presented prizes to winners in model mother and baby show.

Chairman of Haka Township MCWA U Nyunt Myaing presented prizes to the winners in the essay contest and mass sports activities 1998-99.
