YANGON, 6 Jan - Union Solidarity and Development Association Special Refresher Course No 4, Executives' Advanced Management Course No 3, International Relations Course No 2 and Executives' Management Course No 16 ended with a closing session in Pyidaungsu Hall of Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby, Yangon Division, at 9 am today addressed by Patron of USDA Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

Present on the occasion were member of the Panel of Patrons of USDA Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and members, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Lt-Gen Tin Tun and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, the ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, other members of the Panel Of Patrons of USDA, members of Central Executive Committee of USDA, the deputy ministers, senior military officers, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, guests, Course In-charge of the training Lt-Col Myo Myint, course supervisors and trainees.

(2) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of Republic of South Africa

YANGON, 6 Jan - Mr Johann Gerhardus Janse Van Rensburg, newly accredited Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the Union of Myanmar, presented his credentials to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 11.30 ,am today.

Present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(3) Myanmar Intranet and Data Communication technology presented

YANGON, 6 Jan - Data Services Co Ltd, a member of Eagle Group of Companies, presented a demonstration on Myanmar Intranet and Data Communication technology at the Overseas Communications Station, Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, Mayangon Township, this evening.

Present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental heads concerned, officials and guests.

Making a speech on the occasion, Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin said Internet, which is widely used in the world, is being installed in Myanmar and can be used in the near future.

(4) National Workshop on Community Based Drug Demand Reduction lessons from Projects on Reducing Illicit Drug Use in the Highlands of East-Asia

YANGON, 6 Jan - National Workshop on Community Based Drug Demand Reduction Lessons from Projects on Reducing Illicit Drug Use in the Highlands of East-Asia jointly sponsored by Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and the United Nations Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) under the MoU signed by six countries on the project on drug control in the sub-region opened at Hotel Equatorial on Alanpyaphaya Road this morning.

Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Resident Representative of UNDCP Mr Richard Dickins and Adviser on Reducing Illicit Drug Use Mr Wayne Bazant made speeches.

Projects on Reducing Illicit Drug Use are being implemented from 1997 to 1999 in six villages in Muse Township in northern Shan State and Momauk Township in Kachin State.

Advisers, experts and departmental officials including project managers of UNDCP Regional Office in Bangkok will discuss matters relating to Community Based Drug Demand Reduction.

Present on the occasion were officials of the Ministry of Defence, CCDAC, Information and Public Relations Department, Border Areas and National Races Development Department, Health Department Social Welfare Department Basic Education Department, Union Solidarity and Development Association  and implementers at the project areas, and Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association.

The workshop continues tomorrow.

(5) Deputy Minister meets Armada Ltd Managing Director

YANGON, 6 Jan - Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint met Managing Director of Armada Ltd of Bangladesh Major General Ruhul Alam Chowdhury who called at his office at 2 pm today.

They discussed matters related to bilateral economic cooperation.

Present on the occasion were officials of the Ministry of Commerce.

(6) Independence Day quiz

YANGON, 6 Jan - Forms are available for contestants to take part in the quiz on the 51st Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition at K 10 per copy.

Winners will be presented K 50,000. Names of the winners will be announced in dailies one week after completion of the exhibition which began on 3 January at Tatmadaw Convention Hall.

(7) Kanbalu Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 6 Jan - The Executive Committee members and all members of Kanbalu Township National League for Democracy, Sagaing Division, tendered their resignations and dissolved the
Township NLD on their own volition on 27 December 1998.

Kanbalu Township NLD was first formed on 30 November 1988 with 21 EC members. Out of 21 EC members, 17 were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's party politics. They notified the office of Kanbalu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 27 December, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the flag, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(8) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 6 Jan - Sixty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Sagaing Division, on 25 December.

Sixty-eight members of Ngazun Township NLD, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 25 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

1.    Daw Hse Hse of the National League for Democracy, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected at the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Khamti Township Constituency in Sagaing Division, submitted of her own volition to this Commission that she be permitted to resign because of her health condition.

2.    Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that Daw Hse Hse has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Khamti Constituency effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

(11) Bodh Gaya pilgrims leave for Calcutta

YANGON, 6 Jan - A total of 183 members of Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Groups No 13/99 to 18/99 of Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Supervisory Committee of the Ministry of Religious Affairs left here
for Calcutta, India, by air this morning.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of Religious Affairs Department U Arnt Maung and officials.
