(1) Secretary-l attends opening ceremony of 1998 health research paper reading session

YANGON, 20 Dec - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt today attended the ceremonies to hand over the newly-built basic education school buildings, and open and hand over the renovated school buildings in Dagon Seikkan Township, and inspected works for development of the township today.

Also present at the ceremonies were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, district, township and ward authorities, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire Brigades, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, the township education officer and others.

(2) Over K 10m donated to Shwethanlwin Home for Aged

YANGON, 20 Dec - A ceremony- to donate cash for Shwethanlwin Home for the Aged in Dagon Seikkan Township, Yangon Division, was held at new building of the Home for the Aged this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Office of the U Arnt Kyaw explained the facts about Shwethanlwin Home for the Aged.

Chairman of Shwethanlwin Co Ltd U Kyaw Win explained the donation.

Then, well-wishers donated over K 10 million for the funds of Home for the Aged.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Ministers Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, U Aung San, Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe and Mayor U Ko Lay accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to donors.

Today's donations included K 300,600 donated by Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun-Daw Myint Myint Ko and family for an aged person, K 2.4 million by U Chaung-Daw Shwe Sin and family of Golden Uni Investment Co Ltd for the eight aged persons, K 900,000 by families of DHSHD for three aged persons, K 300,000 by Director-General U Arnt Kyaw and family, K 600,000 by construction entrepreneurs, K 300,000 each by U Ohn Myint-Daw San Myint, Ma Aye Hla Thu and Ma Mya The Nu, U Kyaw Win Daw Khin Swe Oo of Myanmar Shwetharaphu Construction, U Aye Thein-Daw Tin Hnaung Htwe, U San Hlaing Daw Khin Mi Mi Lwin and Daw Nyo Nyo Aung of Mandalay, Asia World Co, U Thein Tun-Daw Shwe Kyi of Yan Myo Aung Co, Daw Ja Bu of Ja Bu Co, U Maung Maung of Great Wall Co, U Soe Aung of Aung Thukha Construction, U Maung Maung Swe Tin-Dr Mya Thida of Services International Co Ltd.

After the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the scale model of Shwethanlwin Home for the Aged and the progress in construction work.

The reinforced concrete building of Shwethanlwin Home for the Aged is being built on 5 acres of land, including hostels for the aged persons, the mess, kitchen, prayer hall, lobby, clinic and office which can accommodate 100 aged persons.

The construction project of Home for the Aged began on 18 March 1998, and it is being built by Shwethanlwin Co Ltd at a cost of K 80 million.

(3) Construction of Aung Zeya Bridge inspected

YANGON, 20 Dec - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Aung Zeya Bridge across Hline River linking Insein and Hlinethaya Townships this morning.

Accompanied by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Than, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Deputy Minister for Energy U Tin Tun, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Col Hsan Hsint, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and officials, the Secretary-2 inspected earth work of approach road on Insein side, progress of work on construction of approach road, laying of concrete for flooring of main bridge and piers.

Superintending Engineer (Project) U Khin Maung Aye of Public Works reported on work done and progress of work.

(4) Secretary-2 inspects poultry sampling project in Pyinmabin

YANGON, 20 Dec - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected poultry sampling project of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries in Pyinmabin, Mingaladon Township, this afternoon.

The Secretary-2, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Col Hsan Hsint, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, Joint Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee U Kyi Win and officials were briefed on the project by Deputy General Manager U Than Shwe of Livestock, Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise.

Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein also gave supplementary report on experimental raising of poultry for meat and research work being done at the place.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected the research work being done there and modern equipment used in weighing and survey of quality of eggs.

(5) Commander inspects reclamation of wetlands, fallow and virgin lands

YANGON, 20 Dec - Member of the State Peace and Development Council and Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected construction of Yedwingon-Myochaung Road and reclamation of wetlands in Myitkyo region, Hmawby Township, Aikalaungkyun region, Taikkyi Township and Bawlekyun region in Htantabin Township yesterday.

The commander, accompanied by Col Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and division-level departmental officials, arrived at the project site for construction of Yedwingon-Myochaung Road which passes through Bawlekyun region and for building of the bridge between mile posts 34/3 and 34/4 on Yangon-Pyay Highway in Hmawby Township at 7.40 am.

They were welcomed there by officials, and Superintending Engineer of Yangon Division U Soe Nyunt reported on progress of work of the project.

The commander gave instructions on the work.

Yedwingon-Myochaung Road is a section of the road that will be a link between Kyudaw Village, Bawlekyun region, Htantabin Township, and Yedwingon Village, Hmawby Township. Kyudaw-Yedwingon Road is about 10 miles long. A bridge across Hline River which will link Myochaung Village, Hmawby Township, with Kyogon Village, Bawlekydn region, Htantabin Township, will be built.

Then, the commander inspected the model onion fields of Myanma Agricultural Service on the side of Hline River at Kywegu Village, Htantabin Township, and the fields worked by onions and pulses and beans growers along the bank of Hline River.

The commander and party went to the project site for reclamation of wetlands in Myitkyo region, Hmawby Township being undertaken by Steel Stone Agricultural Group.

The commander inspected the work on the project.

In the hall of the project, Deputy Director of Division Settlement and Land Records Department U Naing Win, Director of Division Irrigation Department U Tin Maung Win and Deputy General Manager of Division Myanma Agricultural Service U San Maung reported on the works to be carried out by respective departments, and Chairman of Steel Stone Company Ltd U Than Lwin on arrangements to cultivate summer paddy on 500 acres of land, sesamum on 300 acres and corn on 132 acres and requirements.

The commander also met local farmers and urged them to cultivate oil crops and provide assistance for the wetlands reclamation project.

(6) Minister inspects Perennial Plants Applied Research Centre in Mawlamyine

YANGON, 20 Dec - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and officials visited the Perennial Plants Applied Research Centre at Pha-auk in Mawlamyine Township on 16 December morning. They were briefed on cultivation and growth of perennial plants such as rubber, oil palm and cashew, and coconut palm hybrids, irrigation, hybridization, soil tests, plant nursing and insects research findings. Those in-charge also briefed them on cultivation of crops among the rubber plantations to retain moisture in the soil.

In the afternoon, they met the farmers of Thaton Township in the Thuwunna Hall in Thaton.

(7) Myanmar London Golf Tour concludes

YANGON, 20 Dec - The second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour, organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Professional Golfers Association (PGA-Myanmar) with the sponsorship of Rothmans and Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, continued for the fourth and fifth day together with a prize distribution ceremony at Ayethayar Golf Club in Taunggyi Shan State, this afternoon.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council and Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo attended the second leg of Myanmar Golf Tour and prize-distribution ceremony.

(8) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 20 Dec - Seven members of National League for Democracy of Mudon Township, Mon State, tendered their resignations on their own volition by sending letters of resignation to Mudon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 17 November as they no longer wished to participate in the political activities of NLD.

Similarly, 23 members of Madaya Township NLD, Mandalay Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Madaya Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 14 December as they no longer wished to take part in the political activities of NLD.

(9) Women's and Men's Sepak Takraw teams win silver

YANGON, 19 Dec - Myanmar women's and men's teams won silver medals each in Sepak Takraw Circle Game in the XIII Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, this morning.

Thai women's team was first with 3708 points followed by Myanmar women's team with 3374 points and Vietnam women's team third with 2543 points in the final events.

In the men's final events, Thailand was first with 5134 points, Myanmar second with 4701 points followed by Malaysia with 3851 points.

Myanmar Sports contingent bagged one gold, six silver and four bronze after the games.

(10) Minister for Sports inspects stadiums, sports grounds in Shwepyitha, Dawbon

YANGON, 20 Dec - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, accompanied by Officer on Special Duty at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Deputy Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Lt-Col Thein Aung and officials, inspected stadiums and sports grounds in Dawbon and Shwepyitha Townships this morning.

The minister and party met Chairman of Shwepyitha Township Peace and Development Council U Win, officials and members of Township and Ward Sports and Physical Education Committees at Nawarat Sports Ground in Shwepyitha Township.

He gave instructions to officials on renovation of the sports ground.

The minister inspected stadium and sports ground in Shwepyitha Township and gave necessary instructors.

The minister and party then inspected the stadium in Dawbon Township.

(11) MEA branches subject-wise formed

YANGON, 20 Dec - A meeting to form Myanmar Engineering Association's branches subject-wise was held in the hall of the association with an address by Chairman of MEA U Nyi Hla Nge.

The three branches formed successfully today are Electronic Engineering Branch, Civil Aviation Engineering Branch and Architectural Branch Talks on Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering will be conducted at MEA on 27 December and those interested may attend it.
