(1) Secretary-l attends opening ceremony of 1998 health research paper reading session

YANGON, 19 Dec - A ceremony to open the 1998 health research paper reading session of the Ministry of Health was held in the hall of the Institute of Nursing this morning, and Chairman of National Health Committee l Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt -Gen Kin Nyunt addressed the opening ceremony.

Present on the occasion were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State; Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, department heads, advisers to the Ministry of Health, advisory officials, directors-general, deputy directors-general, medical superintendents, rectors, professors, heads of departments of the Ministry of Health, chairmen and officials of non-governmental organizations, resident representatives of UN agencies, researchers, resource persons and specially invited guests.

(2) Secretary-2 inspects agriculture services of Sein Enterprise in Pale Myothit

YANGON, 19 Dec - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected agriculture services of Sein Enterprise in Pale Myothit in Mingaladon Township this afternoon.

The Secretary-2, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Col Hsan Hsint, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and officials were briefed on experimental plantation at Shwenantha Agricultural Research Farm and training for dissemination of agricultural education by Managing Director U Sein Oo of Sein Enterprise.

The Secretary-2 and party were also briefed on experiment of quality of water melon cultivated with the use of advanced technology by technicians with modern equipment.

Sein Enterprise carries out research on water melon and other vegetables at 45-acre research farm and distributes the best seeds to farmers.

(3) Ministers attend ASEAN Ministerial Meetings for 6th ASEAN Summit

YANGON, 19 Dec Minister Foreign Affairs U Win Aung attended the Ministerial Meeting 6th ASEAN Summit at Orchid Hall of Hanoi Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, on 12 December.

Also present on the occasion were foreign ministers of the ASEAN member nations.

Similarly, Minister at the office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel attended the Meeting of the ASEAN Economic Minister for the 6th ASEAN Summit at Jasmine Hall of the Hanoi Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi on 12 December. The Economic Ministers of the ASEAN member nations were present.

Afterwards, Minister U Win Aung and Minister Brig Gen Abel attended the Joint Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Economic Ministers for the 6th ASEAN Meeting at Ball Room of the Hanoi Daewoo Hotel on 13 December. Present also were foreign ministers and economic ministers of ASEAN member nations.

In the evening, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of SRV Mr Nguyen Manh Cam and Minister of Commerce Mr Truong Dinh Tuyen hosted dinner at the Ball Room in honour of the ministers of foreign affairs and economic ministers of ASEAN member countries.

While in Hanoi, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung called on Secretary General of ASEAN Mr Rodolfo C Severino Jr and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of SRV Mr Nguyen Manh Cam at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel on 11 December, Foreign Minister Dato Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi of Malaysia, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ali Alatas of Indonesia, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Her Royal Highness Princess Hajjah Masna of Brunei Darussalam and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Somsavat Lengsavad of Lao People's Democratic Republic on 12 December, Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Surin Pitsuwan of Thailand and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof S Jayakumar of Singapore on 13 December and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Domingo L Siazon Jr of Republic of the Philippines on 14 December.

On 12 December, Minister U Win Aung received correspondent of the Vietnam TV Mr Lie Ky Anh and correspondent of the Asiaweek Mr Roger Mitton at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel and answered the questions put by them.

Similarly, Minister Brig Gen Abel received correspondent of the Asiaweek Mr Alejandro Reyes at the hotel on 13 December.

(4) Health research paper reading session begins

YANGON, 19 Dec - The health research paper reading session began at the Medical Research Department on Ziwaka Street in Dagon Township for first day today.

Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and Rector of Institute of Nursing Professor Dr Marlar Maung presided over the morning session. Resource persons presented eight papers to the morning session and answered the questions raised.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, the president of Myanmar Medical Association, directors-general and rectors under the Ministry of Health, resource persons, researchers and guests.

Professor and Head of Department Dr Maung Maung Win of Institute of Medicine-1 and Professor and Head of Department Dr Myint Aung of IM-2 chaired the evening session. Resource persons presented nine papers to the evening session and answered the queries.

Eighty-three papers will be presented to the research paper reading session. It will be held till 23 December. Seventeen research posters are being displayed there.

(5) Myanmar Beans, Pulses and Sesamum Merchants Association holds annual meeting

YANGON, 19 Dec - The sixth annual meeting of Myanmar Beans and Pulses and Sesamum Merchants Association was held at Yuzana Hotel today, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Present were Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental officials, honorary patrons of Myanmar Beans and Pulses and Sesamum Merchants Association, Central Executive Committee members and guests.

Chairman of Myanmar Beans and Pulses and Sesamum Merchants Association U Maung Maung Nyunt delivered an opening address.

Minister Brig Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Ministers Commodore Myo Tint and Col Thaik Tun and President of the Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry U Khin Maung Yi also spoke.

(6) Pauktaw Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 19 Dec - The Executive Committee members and all members of Pauktaw Township National League for Democracy, Rakhine State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 20 November 1998.

Pauktaw Township NLD was first formed on 9 December 1988 with seven EC members. Out of seven EC members, five were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Pauktaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 20 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(7) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 19 Dec - Forty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy party of Bogalay Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 25 November.

Forty-four members of Bogalay Township NLD party, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Bogalay Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 25 November as they no longer wished to participate in political activities of NLD.

(8) Kayin New Year Day observed in Hpa-an

YANGON, 19 Dec - Kayin New Year Day for the Year 2738 was celebrated on the lawns of the Kayin State Peace and Development Council in Hpa-an, Kayin State, yesterday morning, attended by Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Saw Khin Soe and members, Chairman of Hpa-an District Peace and Development Council and members, Senior Tatmadaw Officers and officials, invited guests, townspeople, Kayin nationals of wards in Pha-an totaling over 1000.

(9) Women's and Men's Sepak Takraw teams win silver

YANGON, 19 Dec - Myanmar women's and men's teams won silver medals each in Sepak Takraw Circle Game in the XIII Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, this morning.

Thai women's team was first with 3708 points followed by Myanmar women's team with 3374 points and Vietnam women's team third with 2543 points in the final events.

In the men's final events, Thailand was first with 5134 points, Myanmar second with 4701 points followed by Malaysia with 3851 points.

Myanmar Sports contingent bagged one gold, six silver and four bronze after the games.

(10) Myanmar London Golf Tour continues for third day

YANGON, 19 Dec - The second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour jointly organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Professional Golfers Association (PGA-Myanmar) and sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd Ayethata for third day at Ayethata Golf Club in Taunggyi, Shan State, this morning.

Leading golfers on the third day of the tour were Myint Thaung and Soe Kyaw Naing (a) Soe Soe with 229 strokes each, Win Naing Tun with 233, Aung Hla Han with 235 and Win Aung with 236 in professional event.

In men's amateur event, Aung Win leads with 221 strokes, Min Naing with 225, Zaw Moe with 231, Ohn Myint and Zaw Zaw Lat with 239 each. Khin Thu Thu stood first with 249 strokes in women's amateur event, Nu Nu Lwin second with 268 and Yin Yin Aye third with 273.

Men's professional and amateur events will continue tomorrow.
