(1)  Secretary-1 inspects preparations for opening ceremony of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University

YANGON, 8 Dec - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected preparations for opening ceremony of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University this afternoon.

On arrival at Maha Pasana Cave Theindawgyi in Kaba Aye Hill accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the Secretary-1 was welcomed by Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, heads of departments, the directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and officials of the university.

The Secretary-1 inspected preparations for opening ceremony of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University in the Maha Pasana Cave Theindawgyi.

He also inspected newly completed Buddhist Synod Mawgun Museum at Kaba Aye Hill and hostels for students of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University.

(2)  Quantitative and qualitative progress made in crop yield due to efforts for agricultural sector development

YANGON, 8 Dec - The Defence Services Agricultural Training Course No 34 concluded in the Saya San Hall of the Central Model Paddy Cultivation Farm in Hmawby, Yangon Division, at 8.30 am today; Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the closing ceremony.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint, senior military officers of Hmawby Station, heads of departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, members of the Township Peace and Development Council, guests, instructors and trainees.

(3)  Sayadaws, guests arrive to attend opening ceremony of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University

YANGON, 8 Dec - Sayadaws, members of the Sangha and lay disciples from abroad, who will attend the opening ceremony of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University to be opened on 9 December, arrived here by air today.

They were welcomed at Yangon International airport by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, department heads of the Religious Affairs Department, the Department for the Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University, staff members of respective embassies and departmental officials.

(4)  Grant contract signed for project "Environmentally Sustainable Agro-Forestry Training Centre in Inle Lake Region"

YANGON, 8 Dec - The Government of Japan has decided to provide a grant aid of US $ 67,914, under the scheme of the Grass Roots Grant Assistance, to "Karamosia International" for the project "Environmentally Sustainable Agro-Forestry Training Centre in Inle Lake Region".

A grant contract to this effect was signed between Mr Kazuo Asakai, Ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Union of Myanmar and Mr Kenichi Kato, President of Karamosia International, at the residence of the ambassador of Japan today.

Present also were Patron of Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club U Sein Win, Chairman U Sao Kai Pha and member correspondents.

After signing the grant contract, Mr Kazuo Asakai and Mr Kenichi Kato replied to queries raised by the correspondents.

(5)  MIC Secretary receives Financial Counsellor for Southeast Asia

YANGON, 8 Dec - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's office Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received Financial Counsellor for South-east Asia Mr Michel Planque and party of French Embassy Financial Ages based in Singapore who called at the commission office at 10 am today

Also present were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

They discussed foreign investment situation between Myanmar and ASEAN member countries.

(6)  More NLD members resign

YANGON, 8 Dec - A total of 145 members resigned from the National League for Democracy party of Myaung Township, Sagaing Division.

Twenty-eight members of Myaung Township NLD party, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Myaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 28 November as they have no more wish to participate in political activities of NLD Similarly, 117 members of the party on 3 December, totaling 145, sent their letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned.

Thirty-one members of Kyaunggon Township NLD party, Ayeyawady Division, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Kyaunggon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 26 November as they have no more wish to participate in political activities of NLD.

Similarly, 80 members resigned from Kyaunggon Township NLD party on 28 November, 67 members on 29 November and 70 members on 1 December, totaling 248.

(7)  Dy Minister inspects Thanlwin Bridge (Tarsan) Project

YANGON, 8 Dec - Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint arrived at Thanlwin Bridge (Tarsan) Construction Project on 4 December.

At the briefing hall later, he was briefed on arrangements made by In-charge of the Project Superintending Engineer U Than Swe and on machinery and materials as well as assignment of skilled workers by Chief Engineer U Soe Win.

It will be a steel truss suspension bailey bridge with concrete structure. It will be 900 feet long and 16 feet five inches wide.

The clearance is 16 feet. It will be able to bear 60-ton loads.

The project began on 1 April 1997 and work is under way for completion according to schedule.

The deputy minister called for undertaking tasks simultaneously instead of carrying out one after another.

He then fulfilled the requirements at work.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and party went on inspection rounds at the Mongpan side on 4 December and at Mongton side on the following morning.

They also encouraged junior engineers and skilled workers engaged in the project.

They later met the employees in the briefing hall of the project and explained to them political, economic and social situation in the country.

The deputy minister urged them to try to complete the project on time since it would serve as an important link between the national brethren.

He then presented gifts to the employees.

1. U Sai Tun Aung of the National League for Democracy, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected at the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Mongyaung Township Constituency in Shan State, submitted of his own volition to this Commission that he be permitted to resign because of his health and he had no interest in taking part in political activity.

2. Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that U Sai Tun Aung has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Mongyaung Constituency effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

YANGON, 8 Dec - Chairman Mr Carol H Auyang of South Asia Economic and Technical Cooperation (Group), accompanied by Chairman Mr Lau Hung Faat of China Mass Hong Kong Ltd and party, called on Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung at his office this morning.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Than Tun, the directors general and managing directors of departments and enterprises and officials.

 BANGKOK, 8 Dec - Chinese weight-lifter Yang Xia won the snatch in the women's 53kg division at the Asian Games on Tuesday.

Li Feng Ying of Taiwan was second with Swe Swe Win of Myanmar third.

(11)  Two vocalists to attend Hanoi-ASEAN Golden Vocalist Festival

YANGON, 8 Dec - Vocalists U Thein Myint Than and U Thant Zin (a) Peter Ba Thein left here to attend the Hanoi-ASEAN Golden Vocalist Festival to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 10 to 13 December.

The were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay and officials.
