(1)   General Maung Aye looks into roads and bridges construction and development in Rakhine State

YANGON, 6 Dec - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye discussed matters of Yangon-Sittway Road and regional development with members of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council, departmental officials and chairmen of District and Township Peace and Development Councils at the meeting hall of Western Command in Sittway on 5 December.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on 202-mile Yangon-Sittway road.

Construction of the road began on 18 February 1996 and 67 miles of the road have been tarred and the rest are gravel and earth roads.

Out of 806 bridges along the road, 527 have already been built.

Superintending Engineer (Planning) U Kyaw Tint reported on the progress of work being done.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun also reported on road and bridge projects being implemented in Rakhine State, works for ensuring better transport in the States and Divisions and construction of the airfield.

General Maung Aye gave instructions to minimize loss and wastage in construction materials and fuel oil, to keep up supervision and to work with full efficiency.

Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe then reported on progress of work on Yangon Sittway road, arrangements for cultivation of 50,000 acres of groundnut, 100,000 acres of mustard and 10,000 acres of onions and requirements.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo said most of the monsoon paddy has been cultivated in Rakhine State and prospects for purchase are good.

(2)   First Myanmar Women's Conference held by National Committee for Women's Affairs

YANGON, 6 Dec - A ceremony to open First Myanmar Women's Conference sponsored by Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning, attended by Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, and addressed by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

(3)   Secretary-1 attends sixth annual general meeting of First Myanmar Investment Co Ltd

YANGON, 6 Dec - The sixth annual general meeting of First Myanmar Investment Co Ltd was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road this afternoon, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Minister at the Office of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, heads of department, diplomats, Managing Agent of First Myanmar Investment Co Ltd Mr Serge Pun (a) U Thein Wai, Chairman of FMI Co Ltd U Hla Kyi, advisers, Managing Director U Kyaw Paing and members of the Board of Directors, share holders and guests.

U Thein Wai (a) Mr Serge Pun extended greetings and explained about the work being undertaken and future programme with the aid of video presentations.

Chairman of FMI Co Ltd U Hla Kyi and Managing Director U Kyaw Paing presented K 1 million to Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein for the National Health Committee and K 1 million for Myanmar Education Committee through Minister for Education U Than Aung.

Then, U Thein Wai explained matters related to the share holders and answered the questions raised by the guests.

Chairman of Advisory Group of FMI Co Ltd Col Win Maung (Retired) extended greetings.

The financial statement and the annual report of FMI Co Ltd were approved, and executives directors and new auditor were elected.

Chairman of FMI Co Ltd U Hla Kyi and Col Win Maung (Retired) thanked the officials.

(4)   Secretary-1 attends dinner to mark 34th Anniversary Founding Day of Yangon Institute of Economics

YANGON, 6 Dec - A dinner to mark the 34th Anniversary Founding Day of Yangon Institute of Economics was held at the institute at 6 pm today, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The ceremony was also attended by Minister at the Office of Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Chairman of Yangon city Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Ministers for Education Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, Director-General of Higher Education Department U Myo Nyunt and officials, well-wishers and guests, faculty members and students.

(5)   Naga group exchanges arms for peace

YANGON, 6 Dec - The government is building a peaceful modern developed nation after laying down the Political, Economic and Social Objectives. The government welcomes those who exchange arms for peace for national reconsolidation with true goodwill and provides food, clothing and shelter needs of the peace groups.

Armed groups in jungle, realizing the government's genuine goodwill and correct moves exchanged arms for peace individually or in groups.

On 20 November, two men and three family members led by commanding officer John (a) Ram Hsaung of Naga group (NNC) Battalion 2 exchanged arms for peace bringing in one M-20 pistol, two M-21 automatic rifles, one M-22 automatic rifle and 32 rounds of ammunition at the regional battalion in Khamti.

A ceremony to exchange arms for peace was held at the People's Grounds in Khamti on 30 November.

The two led by commanding officer John (a) Ram Hsaung handed their arms to officiating tactical operations commander of North West Command Lt-Col Khin Maung Myint.

Provisions were made for them.

(6)   Minister leave for Indonesia to attend ASEAN Meeting on Rural Development and poverty Eradication

YANGON, 6 Dec - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt left here by air this morning to attend the Informal Meeting of ASEAN Ministers on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication to be held 7 and 8 December in Indonesia.

The minister was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

(7)   More NLD members resign

YANGON, 6 Dec - Fifty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy party of Dabeintaung Village, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division.

They tendered their resignations of their own volition by sending letters of resignation to Dabeintaung village Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission of Hlegu Township and the party concerned on 30 November 1998 as they have no more wish to participate in political activities of NLD.

(8)   Hpakant Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 6 Dec - The Executive Committee members of Hpakant Township National League for Democracy, Kachin State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD of their own volition on 29 November 1998.

Hpakant Township NLD was first formed on 7 February 1989 with six EC members. It was reformed on 8 June 1990 with 21 EC members. Now, only 13 EC members were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership of their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to participate in NLD's political activities.

They notified the office of Hpakant Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned, and dissolved the Township NLD of their own volition on 29 November 1998.

(9)   Asia Wealth Bank Ltd opens Mandalay Branch-3

YANGON, 6 Dec - Asia Wealth Bank Ltd opened Mandalay Branch-3 at No 4, 78 Street, Chanayethazan Township this morning.

Present were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Deputy Commander Col Nay Win, Mayor of Mandalay Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Chairman of Asia Wealth Bank Ltd U Win Maung, Vice-Chairman U Aik Tun, officials of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and guests.

Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister U Khin Maung Thein, Chairman U Win Maung and Vice-Chairman U Aik Tun formally opened Mandalay Branch-3.

Together with officials and guests, they inspected the branch bank.

Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Minister U Khin Maung Thein made speeches.

Vice-Chairman U Aik Tun thanked the officials.

Member of the Secretariat of USDA U Khin Maung Thein met members of the executive committee and organizers of Mandalay Division and Maha Aungmyay Township USDAs yesterday morning.

He elaborated on organizational work, tasks being carried out, future programmes and training courses being conducted by the association, and attended to their needs.
