(1) General Maung Aye tours Buthidaung Kyauktaw in Rakhine State, Peletwa in Chin State

YANGON, 5 Dec - Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye toured Buthidaung and Kyauktaw in Rakhine State and met with officials of Paletwa Township in Chin State yesterday.

He was accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt Gen Win Myint, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hlaing, ministers, the deputy minister, senior military officers and departmental officials.

They flew from Sittway to Buthidaung yesterday morning, and were welcomed there by Commander of the Tactical Operations Command Col Aung Myint, military officers, departmental officials and families.

Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung met with Buthidaung District and Township departmental officials and personnel, and town elders.

Chairman of Buthidaung District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Hla Maung reported to them on the agriculture services, paddy purchase, departmental buildings under construction and requirements in the project for greening of the jetty and repaving of Buthidaung-Maungdaw Road.

Maj-Gen Kyaw Than gave suggestions on the reports and explained the government's endeavors for development of national economy and enhancement of trade.

Minister U Thaung who is a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, met wit Township USDA executive and members at Township USDA office.

General Maung Aye an party later proceeded to Paletwa in Chin State.

They were welcome there by Commanding Officers of the regional battalion Lt-Col Win Myint Han, departmental officials and local people.

(2) Over K 79.1 million for Lawka Nanda Pagoda in Sittway

YANGON, 5 Dec - A ceremony to present cash donations for Lawka Nanda Pagoda on Yenwesu Ward in Sittway Township, Rakhine State, was held at Maha Waiyan Thathana Beikman of the pagoda yesterday morning, attended by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye.

Present also were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, senior Tatmadaw officers, heads of department, Rakhine State departmental officials, chairman of District and Township Peace and Development Councils and well-wishers.

General Maung Aye and party presented offertories to members of the Sangha after receiving the Five Precepts from the member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sittway Myoma Pariyatti Sarthintaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Khandi.

Well-wishers handed over K 79.1 million to Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and officials for the pagoda funds.

(3) Second round donations for offering Magaiktaw and Salwedaw to Maha Zeya Atulamarazein Bronze Buddha Statue

YANGON, 5 Dec - The second round of donation ceremony for offering Magaiktaw and Salwedaw to Maha Zeya Atulamarazein Bronze Buddha Statue was held in the Prayer hall of the Bronze Buddha Statue on Gyatawya Road in Bahan Township this afternoon, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were members of the Sangha led by Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Panandabhivamsa, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, members of the Board of Trustees and donors.

The Secretary-1 and the minister accepted the donations and presented certificates to the donors.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panandabhivamsa.

The Secretary-1 and members presented offertories to the members of the Sangha. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panandabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

The Secretary-1 and Myanmar engineers discussed matters concerning the work for maintenance of the Htidaw of the Shwedagon Pagoda and work to be done with the use of modern techniques based on findings.

(4) Secretary-l receives U Saw Tun Oo of Burma Communist Party (Rakhine State)

YANGON, 5 Dec - Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received U Saw Tun Oo of Burma Communist Party (Rakhine State) and party who exchanged arms for peace at the Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 4 pm today.

They discussed regional development work, wood-based industry and commercial activities.

Present also were Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Director-General of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department and officials.

(5) Secretary-1 attends ceremonies to open and hand over new buildings of basic education schools

YANGON, 5 Dec - Ceremonies to open and hand over new buildings donated by Human Settlement and Housing Development Department for the basic education middle school of Kyansittha Housing Complex, No 15 Basic Education Primary School and No 16 BEEPS in Hlinethaya Township were held at the respective schools, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office Brig Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, department heads, district, township and ward authorities, directors-general and officials of departments under the Ministry of Construction and Ministry of Education, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, township education officer, members of the School Welfare Committees, members of Parent-Teacher Associations, ward elders, headmasters, teachers, students and specially invited guests.

The ceremony to open and hand over the new building for the basic education middle school of Kyansittha Housing Complex in Hlinethaya Township was held at that school on Kyansittha Street, Kyansittha Housing Complex, at 9.00 am.

(6) USDA Secretary-General receives Vietnamese delegation

YANGON, 5 Dec - Secretary-General of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Than Aung received a three-member delegation led by Representative of Vietnam Parliament and member of External Affairs of the National Convention Mr Vu Xuan Hong, accompanied by First Secretary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Embassy Mr Pham Ngoc Thuan, who called at USDA Headquarters this afternoon.

Also present at the call were member of Central Executive Committee of USDA U Thein Sein, officials of the headquarters, secretaries and EC members of Yangon Division and District USDA.

(7) Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association observes World AIDS Day

YANGON, 5 Dec - The World AIDS Day was observed under the sponsorship of the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the multi-purpose building of the association at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this afternoon with an address by member of the National Health Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, department heads and officials of the Ministry of Health, resident representatives and officials of UN agencies, members of the panel of patrons of MMCWA, Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice Chairperson Dr Khin Win Shwe and members of the Executive Committee, officials of Myanmar Red Cross Society, Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association, Myanmar Music Asiayon and Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon, members of Yangon Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association Supervisory Committee, executives and members of Maternal and Child Welfare Associations in Yangon Division and guests.

Project Manager Dr Nwe Oo of MMCWA acted as master of ceremonies.

(8) Ann Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 5 Dec - The Executive Committee members and all members of Ann Township National League for Democracy, Rakhine State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 14 November 1998.

Ann Township NLD was first formed on 3 December 1988 with 27 EC members but the number was reduced considerably due to various reasons. Out of 27 EC members, eight were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Ann Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 14 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(9) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 5 Dec - Forty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy party of Kyaiklat Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Twenty-nine members of Kyaiklat Township NLD party, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Kyaiklat Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 17 November as they have no more wish to participate in political activities of NLD.

Similarly, nine members of the party on 24 November and seven members on 26 November, totaling 45, sent their letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned.
