(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Thailand

YANGON, 5 Dec - On the occasion of the birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej which falls on 5 December 1998, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand, and to His Excellency Mr Chuan Leekpai, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand.

(2)  Minister for Foreign Affairs sends felicitations to Thailand

YANGON, 5 Dec - On the occasion of the birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej which falls on 5 December 1998, His Excellency U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand.

YANGON, 4 Dec - Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye discussed with officials of Rakhine State ways for greater progress in regional farming activities.

Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Livestock and Fisher Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Director of Military Engineers Brig-Gen Win Aung Tint, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare Col Kyaw Myint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and the respective departments, the General left here by Tatmadaw aircraft for Sittway at 1.30 pm yesterday.

On arrival at Sittway Airport, the General and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Commander of Danyawady Naval Region Command Commodore Myat Swe, military officers, division-level officials and families.

They flew on by helicopter to Ponnagyun Township where they inspected regional development works.

At the Township Union Solidarity and Development Association Office, they cordially met with USDA members and observed progress in construction of the association's new building.

Later, they paid obeisance at Uyittaw Pagoda and heard a report on its history presented by a member of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

General Maung Aye is gave suggestions on the pagoda renovation and presented a donation for that.

The General and party also met with departmental personal.

(4)  Secretary-1 oversees preparations for opening ceremony of international Theravada Buddhist Missionary University

YANGON, 4 Dec - Secretary-1 of the State Peace .and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this morning inspected preparations for the opening ceremony of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University and construction of buildings for members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee.

The Secretary-1, accompanied by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council and departments, arrived Theindawgyi at the Maha Pasana Cave, where the opening ceremony of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University will be held, in the compound of Thirimingala Kaba Aye.

(5)  Secretary-1 inspects Ywama Steel Mill in Insein Township

YANGON, 4 Dec - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected Ywama Steel Mill in Insein Township this afternoon.

The Secretary-1, accompanied by officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, arrived at the mill at 2.30 pm.

They were welcomed by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, department heads, officials of No 3 Mining Enterprise, Chairman of National Industrial Holdings Ltd U Htay Myint and members, the general manager of the mill and officials.

(6)  Over K 25.2 million donated for construction of Maha Thantithukha Buddha Sasana building

YANGON, 4 Dec - A ceremony for presentation of donations for construction of Maha Thantithukha Buddha Sasana building for the sixth time was held at the building on Natchaung Ward in Tamway Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein Minister for Religious Affairs Maj Gen Sein Htwa, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the Office of State Peace and Development Council, members of Organizing Committee and Working Committee for the construction of Maha Thantithukha Buddha Sasana building, Managing Director of ASIA World Construction U Tun Myint Naing and directors, services personnel, guests and well-wishers.

(7)  Secretary-l attends dinner to mark 78th Anniversary of Yangon University

YANGON, 4 Dec - A dinner to mark the 78th Anniversary of Yangon University was held on the lawns of the Arts Hall today, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, officials of the office of State Peace and Development Council, Director-General of Higher Education Department U Myo Nyunt and officials, rectors of universities and institutes, old students of YU, Pro Rector of YU Dr Soe Yin, other faculty members and students.

Pro-Rector Dr Soe Yin Spoke about the anniversary day of Yangon University.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister U Than Aung and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung accepted the donations for YU education funds.

(8)  Thai commercial delegation leaves

YANGON, 4 Dec - Thai delegation led by Deputy Minister of Commerce of Thailand Dr Pravich Ratanapian left for Thailand by air yesterday evening after attending Thailand Exhibition '98, organized by Thai Department of Export Promotion and sponsored by TTF (Yangon) Co Ltd, under the arrangement of development for Myanmar and Thailand economic cooperation programme.

(9)  Kyaikto Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 4 Dec - The Executive Committee members and all members of Kyaikto Township National League for Democracy, Mon State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD out of their own volition on 22 November 1998.

Kyaikto Township NLD was first formed in 1989 with 13 EC members. It was reformed in December 1996 with 21 EC members. All EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to participate in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Kyaikto Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 22 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the flag of the party and seals to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

1.  U Tin Nyunt (a) U Htin Kyaw of the National League for Democracy, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elect in the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Mandalay South-East Township Constituency 1 in Mandalay Division, submitted of his own volition to this Commission that he be permitted to resign because he had no desire to carry out the activities of NLD party.

2.  Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that U Tin Nyunt (a) U Htin Kyaw has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Mandalay South-East Constituency 1 effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

2.  Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission, hereby announces that U Tun Ohn has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Dagon Myothit Constituency effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

(11)  More NLD members resign

YANGON, 4 Dec - Eighty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pantanaw Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Forty-nine members of Pantanaw Township NLD party, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Pantanaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 17 November as they have no more wish to participate in political activities of NLD. Similarly, 13 members of the party on 19 November and 18 members on 21 November, totaling 80, sent their letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned.
