(1)  Senior General Than Shwe inspects preparations for opening of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University

YANGON, 2 Dec - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected preparations for opening International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University in Mayangon Township this evening.

Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, on arrival at the university, was welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Ministers, senior military officers, departmental heads and officials of the university.

Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa reported on opening of the university with lofty aims to propagate genuine Theravada Buddhism in the world, to learn original Theravada Pitakat treatises after holding the Sixth Synod and practice them, to avoid sins and perform good deeds, to restore cardinal virtues in the world and emerge peaceful and prosperous society and to increase missionaries well-versed in Pariyatti Pitakat treatises and good conduct in Patipatti, location and area of the university, formation of working committees for opening the university, drafting of organizational set-up and curriculum, buildings, strength of appointed personnel, selection of students and faculty members, preparations for teaching, text books and preparations for the opening ceremony of the university.

(2)  Secretary-1 receives General Chetta Thanajaro (Retired) of Thailand

YANGON, 2 Dec - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received the visiting General Chetta Thanajaro (Retired) of Thailand and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 12.10 pm today.

Present on the occasion together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet, heads of departments of the Office of Strategic Studies Col Thein Swe and Col Kyaw Thein.

(3)  State promoting sports as vital for national development Secretary-1 meets Myanmar sports contingent to 13th Asian Games

YANGON, 2 Dec - Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with members of Myanmar sports contingent who will take part in the 13th Asian Games this morning at National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna.

The Secretary-1 also presented the national flag to the leader of the contingent.

Also present were Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, senior military officers, officials of State Peace and Development Council Office, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, presidents of sports federations, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, OSD Col Ngo Ciin Pau, Adviser Col Thaung Htaik, donors and others.

Patron of MWSF Dr Khin Win Shwe presented sports equipment worth K 390,850 to Col Chit Than.

The Secretary-1 cordially met members of the contingent individually.

(4)  Minister meets President of Petroleum Authority of Thailand International

YANGON, 2 Dec - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met President of Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PAT) International Dr Viset Choopiban and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

They discussed matters of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung was also present.

(5)  Secretary-2 receives Adviser to People's Government of Yunnan Province of PRC

YANGON, 2 Dec - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo received Adviser to People's Government of Yunnan Province Mr Linghu An and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 2.40 pm today.

Present on the occasion together with Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo were Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong.

(6)  Two sets of Olympus Videoscopes for Gastroenterology donated to Ministry of Health

YANGON, 2 Dec - Ministry of Defence donated two sets of Olympus Videoscopes for Gastroenterology worth US $ 117,206 to the Ministry of-Health today.

On behalf of the Ministry of Defence Secretary-3 of the State Peace and
Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint presented the gifts to
Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein thanked the donor and presented a certificate to the donor.

Present were Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Deputy Adjutant-General Col Ye Tun, Deputy Director of Medical Services Col Aung Naing, Commandant of No 1 Base Medical Store Unit Lt-Col Thein Soe and officials of the Ministry of Health.

(7)  Chinese economic delegation arrives

YANGON, 2 Dec - A nine member Chinese economic delegation led by Adviser to People's Government of Yunnan Province Mr Linghu An from the People's Republic of China arrived here at 12.45 pm today promote friendly relations and economic cooperation.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong, the director-general of Myanma Electric Power Department, the managing director of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise and officials of the Chinese Embassy.

YANGON, 2 Dec - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received President of Ridel Resources Ltd Mr Andrew M Chinnick of Canada and party who called at his office this morning.

They discussed bilateral co operation between the Myanmar and Ridel Resources Ltd in oil exploration and drilling.

U Pru Sein Oo, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elect at the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Myebon Township Constituency in Rakhine State, submitted of his own volition to this Commission that he be permitted to resign because of his old age and health and that he had no desire to carry out political activities.

2. Upon the above-mentioned submission, this commission hereby announces that U Pru Sein Oo has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Myebon Township Constituency effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

2. Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that U Aung Than has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Phyu Township Constituency 1 effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

(10)  Nine NLD members resign

YANGON, 2 Dec - Nine members of National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division, resigned from the party on 19 November 1998.

They are: U Thaung Shwe, U Thein Maung, U Win Tin, U San Lin, U Thaung Myint, Daw Kyi Kyi Myint, U Kyi Nyein, U Paw Win and U Thein Tin.

They notified Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the respective party chairman saying that they had resigned from the party out of their own volition since they had no desire to carry out political activities of NLD.

(11)  Thabeikkyin Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 2 Dec - All Executive Committee members of National League for Democracy from Thabeikkyin Township Mandalay Division, have tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD out of their own volition oh 21 November 1998.

Thabeikkyin Township NLD was first formed on 28 November 1988 with 21 EC members. There were seven EC members left. Now all EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Thabeikkyin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission office and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 21 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals, documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.
