(1)  Secretary-l attends ceremonies to mark output of buckwheat as poppy substitute in Laukkai District of Kokang Region opening of Khunmar Bridge & Hydel Plant in Wa region

YANGON, 1 Dec - Chairman of the Work Committee for Implementation of the Progress of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt addressed the ceremonies to mark the beginning of commercial production of buckwheat at Ta Shwe Tang Village, Laukkai District, Kokang Region, and to inaugurate Khunmar Bridge and Khunmar Hydroelectric Plant in Wa region on 30 November.

The Secretary-1 and party visited Tilawka Wizaya Hsutaungpyi Pagoda at Yaykantaung, Lashio, and paid respects to the Buddha Image there yesterday morning.

The Secretary-1 made a donation for the funds of the pagoda and signed in the visitors' book.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the molding of Maha Muni Bronze Image at Lashio.

The Secretary-1, ministers, deputy ministers, department heads, Director of Japan Liberal Democratic Party Mr Tomomitsu Iwakura, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai, Patron of Foreign Correspondent Club U Sein Win, Dr Mya Mya Win of Myanmar Association in Japan, heads, reporters and cameramen of CNN, TV Asahi, Faits & Project Magazine (French), Documentary Video (US), Nihon Keizai Shimbun Daily, Kyodo News Agency, together with Brig-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, left Lashio by Tatmadaw aircraft at 10 am and arrived at Ta Shwe Tang, Laukkai District, Kokang Region, at 11 am.

They were welcomed there by Commander of No 99 LID Col Htay Oo, Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Han Nyunt, members of Laukkai District Organizing and Administrative Committee departmental officials, Kokang national leader U Phon Kya Shin and national race leaders and local people.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected poppy substitute Japan buckwheat cultivated on 0.7 acre of land.

A ceremony to mark the beginning of commercial production of buckwheat was held at the temporary pandal at Ta Shwe Tang Village at 11.30 am.

The Secretary-1 delivered an address.

(2)  Myanmar Fisheries Federation formed

YANGON, 1 Dec - Myanmar Aquaculture and Fisheries Association was reformed as Myanmar Fisheries Federation at the association's eighth annual meeting held at Yuzana Garden Hotel at 8 am today, with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Ministers at Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for L&F U Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments and enterprises under the Ministry of L&F, Chairman of MAFA Dr Khin Maung, executives and members and guests.

(3)  Workshop for Investment Promotion and Environmental Protection in Mining Sector in ASEAN begins

YANGON, 1 Dec - The Workshop for Investment Promotion and Environmental Protection in Mining Sector in ASEAN began at Sedona Hotel at 9 am today, with an opening address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Sponsored by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, (MMAJ), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Investment Promotion Service, Tokyo, (IPS Tokyo), Japanese Overseas Development Corporation (JODC), Bangkok, and the Ministry of Mines of Myanmar, it is also attended by Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, ambassadors, officials of MMAJ, UNIDO IPS Tokyo, JODC Bangkok, resource persons of ASEAN countries, officials of joint-ventures with the ministry of mines and officials of National Commission on Environmental Affairs totaling over 150.

(4)  Loilem Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 1 Dec - The Executive Committee members and all members of Loilem Township National League for Democracy, Shan State (South), have tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD out of their own volition on 22 November 1998.

Loilem Township NLD was first formed on 17 December 1988 with 18 EC members but 12 were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Loilem Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 22 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the seals, documents and letters of resignation to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(5)  World AIDS Day observed

YANGON, 1 Dec - World AIDS Day was observed at International Business Centre this morning, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Present also were Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Ambassadors, Charge d' Affaires, resident representatives of UN agencies, service personnel, officials of non-governmental organizations, the directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Health, the rectors, professors, directors, medical superintendents, departmental heads, members of Myanmar Anti-AIDS Central Committee and guests.

(6)  Minister meets Adviser of Mastech Co

YANGON, 1 Dec - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Adviser Mr Gilberg Lee and party of Mastech Co Ltd who called at his office at 10 am today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism and other officials.

(7)  More NLD members resign

YANGON, 1 Dec - Altogether 187 members of National League for Democracy of Mawlamyinegyun Township, Ayeyawady Division, tendered their letters of resignation and resigned from the party.

Altogether 35 members of Mawlamyinegyun Township NLD Party, Ayeyawady Division, had resigned from the party out of their own volition since they had no desire to carry out political activities of NLD on 21 November 1998.

Similarly, 11 members of the party on 22 November, 86 members on 23 November, 46 on 25 November and nine on 30 November, totaling 187, notified the Mawlamyinegyun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the respective party chairman saying that they had resigned from the party out of their own volition.

(8)  Entertainment programme to mark Korean Film Festival

YANGON, 1 Dec-Entertainment programme to mark Korean Film Festival sponsored by Korean Embassy in Yangon was held at Thamada Cinema Hall this evening. Diplomats, officials and guests were present.

The film 'Eternal Empire' was shown at the cinema. 'My love, My Bride' and 'The Stairway to Heaven' will be shown on 2 and 3 December.

(9)  Minister for Information visits MRTV

YANGON, 1 Dec - Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung arrived at Myanmar Radio and Television at 11 am today. He was welcomed there by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General U Khin Maung Htay of MRTV, directors, chief engineer and officials.

The minister inspected installations at the 9-metre Earth Station sending out TV programmes through ThaiCom 3 satellite.

Director General U Khin Maung Htay reported to the minister on conditions of the installations, daily tasks and strengthening of the installations.

Officials then reported to the, minister on technical factors and effective use of Fly Away Station.

Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung gave instructions on innovation for easily conveyance of the Fly Away Station and storage of machines.
