(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to President of Romania

YANGON, 1 Dec - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Emil Constantinescu, President of Romania, on the occasion of the Anniversary of the National Day of Romania which falls on 1 December 1998.

(2) Improve health and education facilities in border areas Grow more food crops for self-sufficiency in own region Secretary-1 tours border areas to fulfil requirements

YANGON, 30 Nov - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with members of Shan State (North), District and Township Peace and Development Councils and departmental personnel in Lashio yesterday.

He was accompanied by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister for Education U Than Aung at 4 pm.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen San Thein, military and civil officers, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, family members and local people.

(3) International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University to be opened on 9 Dec

YANGON, 30 Nov - A meeting was held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs this afternoon to coordinate arrangements for the opening ceremony of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University. It was addressed by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

Arrangements are under way to organize a grand opening of the university on 9 December 1998, he said.

Invitations have been extended to trainees from foreign nations and guests to attend the ceremony, he said. He expressed belief that officials of the subcommittees have already made final preparations for the ceremony.

Members of Decorations Sub-committee, Invitation Sub-committee, Reception and Transport Sub-committee, Accommodation Subcommittee, Messing Subcommittee, Health Sub-committee and Information Subcommittee reported on work done sector-wise.

A general round of discussions then followed.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.

Also present on the occasion were members of the Work Committee to Organize the Ceremony, heads of department, members of sub-committees, officials and guests.

(4) Dalla Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 30 Nov - Executive Committee members and members of Dalla Township National League for Democracy, Yangon Division, have tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD out of their own volition on 25 November 1998.

Dalla Township NLD was first formed on 28 November 1988 with 21 EC members but the number was reduced considerably due to various reasons. Out of 21 EC members, only 13 were left. All the 13 resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Dalla Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 25 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(5) Mayor of Ui-Wang calls on Mayor of Yangon

YANGON, 30 Nov - Mayor of Ui-Wang of the Republic of Korea Mr Kung Sang Sup and party called on Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay at his office this afternoon.

Present also were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint Secretary U Kyi Win and heads of departments concerned and officials.

(6) Fourth National Immunization Days Observance Working Committee meets for second time

YANGON, 30 Nov - The Working Committee for Observance of Fourth National Immunization Days held its second meeting in the meeting hall of the Medical Research Department on Ziwaka Road in Dagon Township this morning.

Vice-Chairman of the Working Committee for Observance of Fourth National Immunization Days Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo attended the meeting.

Also present were Director of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises and officials of Myanma Police Force, Yangon Division General Administration Department, Yangon Division Police Force, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Myanmar Nurses Association, Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanma Music Asiayon and Health Department.

Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo delivered an opening speech.

Director (Disease Control) of Health Department Dr Soe Aung, Project Manager Dr Than Htain Win and Head of Yangon Division Health Department Dr Tin Maung Win reported on the work done to observe the Fourth National Immunization Days.

Than, a general round of discussions followed.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the deputy minister.

(7) Deputy DG leaves for Bangkok

YANGON, 30 Nov - Deputy Director-General of Department of Archaeology U Kyaw Win left here this morning to attend a workshop on tourism and preservation of cultural heritage sponsored by SPAFA under South-East Asia Education Minister Organization (SEAMEO) to be held in Bangkok from 30 November to 7 December.

He was seen off at the airport by Director-General of Archaeology Department U Nyunt Han and officials.

(8) Musical show to mark World AIDS Day

YANGON, 30 Nov - December 1, 1998, is World AIDS Day. The motto for this year is Force for Change: World AIDS Day Campaign with Young People".

Myanmar Young Crusaders with the assistance of UNAIDS will present a musical show with the accompaniment of Iron Cross Music Band at the National Theater at 6 pm on 1 December. Admission is free.

(9) Executive Senior MD of Nippon Koei Co call on Minister for Finance and Revenue

YANGON, 30 Nov - Executive Senior Managing Director Mr Yuzo Marusugi of Nippon Koei Co of Japan called on Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein at his office this morning.

They discussed matters of mutual corporation.

(10) Deputy Minister leaves for Nepal

YANGON, 30 Nov - Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and Officer on Special Duty U Thet Shay left here this morning to attend the World Buddhist Summit to be held in Nepal from 1 to 2 December.

The summit is sponsored by the Development Council in Lumbini Park in Nepal.

They were seen off at Yangon international airport by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department U Arnt Maung, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Deputy Director-General Dr Myo Myint, Pro-Rector (Admin) of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Dr Hla Pe and officials.
