(1) Over K 5000m used in education; reforms effected to improve life of teachers and upgrade students; Teachers asked to safeguard students from being exploited by destructive elements

YANGON, 26 Nov - Special Refresher Course No 34 for Basic Education Teachers was opened this afternoon in Nawarat Hall of the Central Institute of Civil Service, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

In his address, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said that at a time when education promotion plans are being laid down and carried out to contribute to national development, teachers who had the chance to attend this course opened with emphasis by the state would get a better understanding of the State's political, economic and social situation and endeavours and gain greater ability and vigour to implement the education promotion plans.

The course opening ceremony ended at 2.35 pm.

Also present were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, deputy ministers, senior military officers, Director-General of State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department, Rector of CICS U Tin Tun, officials and trainees.

The Secretary-1 cordially met the trainees and left the institute in the evening.

The four-week course is being attended by 1,501 teachers from states and divisions.

(2) Secretary-1 receives Assistant Secretary-General of UN

YANGON, 26 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Assistant Secretary General of United Nations and Assistant Administrative Officer of UNDP Dr Nay Dun and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

Present together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister at the Office of Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel and Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win.

Dr Nay Dun was accompanied by Officer-in-charge of UNDP in Yangon Mr Y.Y. Kim.

(3) Secretary-l attends opening ceremony of Myanmar National Commission office for UNESCO

YANGON, 26 Nov - A ceremony to open the office of Myanmar National Commission for UNESCO was held in the compound of the office of Myanmar Education Research Bureau on Pyay Road in Kamayut Township this morning Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally opened the office.

Also present were Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, departmental heads, advisers to the Ministry of Education, directors-general, deputy directors-general and directors of the Ministry of Education, research officers of the Education Research Bureau, Resident Representative of UNESCO Dr Juan Anguilar, Mr Kim of UNDP, Planning Adviser to UNESCO Mr M Robson and officials, Dr Khin Mya Kyu of Myanmar Cooperation Programme of UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, and specially invited guests, students of the Practising School of the institute of Education, the band troupes of Basic Education High School No 2 of Sangyoung Township and teachers.

(4) Production development ensures firm national economic growth

YANGON, 26 Nov - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with secretaries of State/Division Peace and Development Councils this afternoon at the Ministry of Defence.

He explained to them Myanmar's economic situation, production progress of the agricultural sector and improvement of the social sector.

In passing he spoke of the Seventh traditional Bullock cart, Cattle, Fruit and Flower Show which will be held in the year 2000.

Smooth and speedy flow of goods between states and divisions and townships without any hindrances is also a requirement, he noted.

Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Oo and officials reported Director-General of Human Settlement and Housing Development Department U Arnt Kyaw, Chairman of Zaykaba Co Ltd U Khin Shwe and Head of Urban Planning and Land Management Department of Yangon City Development Committee U Tun Than Tun explained housing projects and measures being taken to prevent environmental pollution in setting up industrial zones in Yangon.

(5) Deputy Prime Minister receives Chairman of JETRO

YANGON, 26 Nov - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chairman Mr Noboru Hatakeyama and party of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) who called at 2 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister at the Office of chairman of the State Peace and development Council Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

They discussed matters of mutual economic cooperation between Myanmar and Japan and investment opportunities.

(6) Minister meets Chairman of Japan External trade Organization

YANGON, 26 Nov - Minister at the Office of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel met Chairman Mr Noboru Hatakeyama and party of Japan External Trade Organization who called at his office at 3.30 pm today.

They are currently here to attend the opening ceremony of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (CLM) Industrial Cooperation Seminar sponsored by Japan External Trade Organization.

They discussed matters relating to promotion of exports to Japan and bilateral economic cooperation between Myanmar and Japan entrepreneurs.

Also present on the occasion were officials of departments concerned.

(7) Shanghai Women's Association delegation tours Yangon

YANGON, 26 Nov - Chairperson Ms Meng Yaukun of Shanghai Women's Association of the People's Republic of China visited Super One Shopping Centre in Tamway this afternoon.

Accompanied by Chairperson Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Vice-Chairperson Dr Khin Win Shwe, executives and staff of PRC Embassy, they went shopping at the centre.

Managing Director Daw San San Yi of the centre presented a souvenir to Ms Meng Yaukun.

They also visited Shwedagon Pagoda and the Gems Museum of Myanma Gems Enterprise.

The Ambassador of PRC hosted dinner in honour of them.

The delegation arrived Mandalay yesterday.

They studied maternal and child welfare activities there.

(8) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 26 Nov - Seven members of National League for Democracy of South Okkalapa Township resigned from the party on 24 November 1998.

They are Township NLD party Executive Committee members U Kyaw Win and U Aye Maung, U Ngwe Ya, U Sit Aung, U Zaw Min, U Min Lwin and U Tin Aye.

They notified the South Okkalapa Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the respective party saying that they had resigned from the party out of their own volition since they no longer wish to carry out political activities of NLD.

(9) Minister for Transport visits Mandalay Airport

YANGON, 26 Nov - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Director-General of the Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung and officials, visited Mandalay Airport yesterday morning.

The minister and party inspected car parks, entrance and exit for passengers, the fence of the airport, growing of ornamental trees, passenger lounge, ticket checking counters, arrangements of VIP rooms and installation of air-conditioners.

The minister gave instructions on the work to be done.
