(1) Prime Minister Mr Sisavath Keobounphanh and Madame Khamla Keobounphanh visit Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 24 Nov - Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Sisavath Keobounphanh and Madame Khamla Keobounphanh and goodwill delegation, currently here at the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing visited Shwedagon Pagoda and Myanma Gems Museum today.

Accompanied by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and wife, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and wife, Ambassador of Myanmar to LPDR U Sein Win Aung and wife, Ambassador of LPDR to Myanmar Mr Ly Bounkham and wife, Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and wife and officials, Prime Minister and Madame Keobounphanh and delegation arrived at the pagoda at 7.30 am.

On arrival at the northern stairway, they were welcomed by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees and officials.

(2) Secretary-1 receives Vice-Prime Minister of LPDR Minister of Foreign Affairs

YANGON, 24 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Somsavat Lengsavad and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Present together with the Secretary-1 at the call were Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador of Myanmar to LPDR U Sein Win Aung and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of LPDR to Myanmar Mr Ly Bounkham.

(3) Cash assistance provided for disabled Tatmadaw members for 29th time

YANGON, 24 Nov - The 29th ceremony to present cash assistance to in-service Tatmadaw men who sacrificed their limbs by Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise and well-wishers was held at the City Hall this afternoon. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo addressed the ceremony and handed over the account books.

Also present were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental officials, officials of Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise, well-wishers, guests and disabled Tatmadaw men.

(4) Officials seek ways and means to further develop Shan State

YANGON, 24 Nov - Secretary-2 of State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo coordinated ways and means for development of Shan State at a meeting held at the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs at 4 pm today.

The respective departments should accelerate their momentum of work as the open season has arrived and that the departmental personnel and the local people must harmoniously strive for regional progress including farming, health, education and transport sectors, he stressed. Especially, betterment in road transport is required in promoting regional development tasks and cordial relations among nationals, he pointed out.

Efforts should be made to cultivate paddy and perennial crops on farm land which could not be cultivated for certain reasons, vacant land and allow land, he suggested, stressing the need to present requirements.

Minister for PBANRDA Col Thein Nyunt discussed phase by phase implementing of the tasks for development of Shan State and future programmes.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on plans to upgrade roads in the region.

Departmental personnel presented implementation of plans concerning farming, education and health.

The Secretary-2 looked into the requirements.

Also present were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for PBANRDA U Kyaw Tin, departmental personnel and guests.

(5) Deputy Prime Minister receives Chairman of Tokyo Enterprise

YANGON, 24 Nov - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chairman Mr Takahiro Kuba and party of Tokyo Enterprise Co Ltd who called at his office at 11 am today.

Also present were officials of Government's Office, Myanmar Investment Commission and Ministry of Industry-1.

They discussed the production of dental equipment and materials for use in operation theatres and investment opportunities and prospects.

(6) MER's Kyaukse branch vets new building

YANGON, 24 Nov - New building of Kyaukse branch of Myanma Economic Bank was opened in Kyaukse Township yesterday.

Present were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, members of Kyaukse District and Township Peace and Development Councils, Managing Director of Myanma Economic Bank Thura U Myint Shwe, departmental officials and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Minister U Khin Maung Thein spoke on the occasion.

Managing Director of MEB Thura U Myint Shwe presented commemorative pennants to the guests. Engineer in-charge for construction of the branch bank Superintending Engineer U Saw Sein Tun Aung presented related documents to MEB General Manager U Aung Myint.

Minister U Khin Maung Thein formally unveiled the signboard of the branch and the Commander, Ministers U Khin Maung Thein and U Than Shwe formally opened the branch bank office.

(7) Mandalay International Airport construction inspected

YANGON, 24 Nov - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Director-General of Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung and officials, inspected NyaungU Airport on 23 November.

The Minister and party then went to Mandalay International Airport Construction Project site where they were welcomed by Project Superintending Engineer U Boon Kyi and Project Director U Ohn Myint.

Director-General U Win Maung reported on the project, U Boon Kyi on construction of airport and the runway, U Ohn Myint on progress of work on airport terminal, the basement, the boarding bridge, the control tower, the oil tank, water supply and Myanmar artistic works.

The Minister gave instructions on use of materials, for completion of the project in time as guided by the Head of State and keeping of records.

He inspected construction of the runway, the oil tank and the airport terminal.

(8) Taunggyi Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 24 Nov - The Executive Committee members and all members of Taunggyi Township National League for Democracy have tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD out of their own volition on 21 November 1998.

Taunggyi Township NLD was first formed on 26 October 1989 with 20 EC members but the number was reduced considerably due to transfer, resignations, deaths and other reasons. Out of 20 EC members, only eight were left. The remaining EC members held a meeting at the house of Chairman of Township NLD U Kyi Aye on 21 November 1998. They then resigned from the party membership and EC membership out of their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Taunggyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned. Personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the furniture, documents, seals and signboard to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(9) Minister for Information meets delegates from ASEAN nations

YANGON, 24 Nov - Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met delegates of ASEAN member nations, who attended the Evaluation and Pre-production Meeting for ASEAN in Action V held at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel, this afternoon.

On arrival at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel at 4.00 pm, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung was welcomed by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay and officials. The minister cordially met the delegates from ASEAN member nations.
