(1) Senior General Than Shwe inspects maintenance of ancient Myanmar cultural heritage in Bagan

YANGON, 17 Nov - chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and party arrived at Archaeological Museum in Bagan yesterday morning.

Minister for Culture U Win Sein and Director-General of Department of Archaeology U Nyunt Han reported on the displays of Myanmar cultural heritage, arrangements for publication of guide to museum and pamphlets and arrivals of local and foreign visitors at the museum.

Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance on maintenance of the museum because of greatness of historical value of ancient Myanmar cultural objects and a large amount of the cost of the museum, collecting of more ancient objects and display, fire prevention and security, excavation of ancient mounds in Bagan and maintenance.

Senior General Than Shwe and patty this morning inspected Lawkananda Sanctuary in Bagan and toured Bagan Myothit.

The Senior General and party visited Hsinmyashin Pagoda and toured NyaungU. They arrived back here in the evening.

(2) Secretary-l receives Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of LPDR

YANGON, 17 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Phongsavath Boupha and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador to LPDR U Sein Win Aung and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

The Lao delegation was accompanied by Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham.

(3) Success in wetlands farming will inspire others & benefit nation

YANGON, 17 Nov - A meeting to coordinate surveying and producing designs in taming the vacant, fallow and virgin wetlands in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions took place at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this morning. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo addressed the meeting.

Also present at the meeting were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Deputy Ministers for A & I Brig-Gen Khin Maung and U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Gen Than Tint, department personnel, members of the Agriculture Supervisory Committees of Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions and guests.

(4) Yangon Division and Township MCWAs hold work coordination meeting

YANGON, 17 Nov - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than addressed the work coordination meeting of Yangon Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association Supervisory Committee and Township Maternal and Child Welfare Associations in the meeting hall of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council this morning.

It was also attended by member of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commissioner of Division Administrative Department U Kan Myint, members of the Panel of Patrons of YDMCWASC led by Daw Marlar Tint, Chairman of Supervisory Committee of YDMCWA Head of Division Health Department Dr Tin Maung Win and members, members of Yangon Division Working Committee for Women's Affairs, chairmen of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, chairpersons and secretaries of Township MCWAs.

Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than made a speech.

Dr Tin Maung Win explained guidelines for family income generation.

Daw Marlar Tint handed K 90,000 for nine townships of Yangon East District, K 60,000 for six townships of Yangon West District, K 80,000 for eight townships of Yangon South District and K 70,000 for seven townships of Yangon North District to members of the Panel of Patrons for small loan disbursing business of Township MCWAs.

Then, a general round of discussions followed.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Dr Tin Maung Win.

(5) Kyauktaw Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 17 Nov - The Executive Committee members and all members of Kyauktaw Township National League for Democracy have tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD out of their own volition on 11 November 1998.

Kyauktaw Township NLD was first formed on 16 May 1989 with 17 EC members. Now all members of he township NLD including EC members resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to take part in NLD's political activities.

They notified the office of Kyauktaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned. On 11 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals, documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(6) Deputy Prime Minister receives Japanese businessmen

YANGON, 17 Nov - Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received Chairman Mr Shunichi Takenaga and party of Daimex Inc of Japan who called at his office this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were officials of Government's Office.

(7) Myanmar's efforts in environmental sanitation week movement win high appreciation

YANGON, 17 Nov - A delegation led by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein attended the Fourth Ministerial Level Meeting on the Children's Development Targets in 2000 of East Asia and the Pacific Region in Bangkok, Thailand, from 12 to 15 November and arrived back here yesterday evening.

The meeting discussed priorities for development, health and education of the children and all the participating nations unanimously approved the Bangkok Declaration on the Children's Development Targets in 2000.

Prime Minister of Thailand Mr Chuan Leepai and Executive Director of UNICEF Ms Carol Bellamy addressed the opening ceremony at the Hilton International Hotel in Bangkok.

Leader of Myanmar delegation Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered a statement on 13 November on the tasks undertaken in the health sector in Myan-mar. He highlighted the first national environmental sanitation week activities carried out with public cooperation in the country under the leadership of the State Peace and Development Council. It was presented with the aid of a video feature. The UNICEF and participating nations appreciated Myanmar's having built nearly one million fly-proof latrines during the environmental sanitation week and they said developing nations should emulate Myanmar's exemplary achievement.

The Minister also discussed maternal and child health, nutrition, environmental sanitation, AIDS prevention and education, maternal and child care being provided in the country with the assistance of UNICEF.

The meeting was represented by 23 nations in all. Twelve ministers and five deputy ministers led the delegations.

The Myanmar delegation held separate meetings with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Public Health Mr Korn Dabbaransi and UNICEF Executive Director Ms Carol Bellamy and discussed health, education and social sectors.

The delegation visited the Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok.

(8) Singaporean businessmen calls on Minister for Cooperatives

YANGON, 17 Nov - Chairman of Sineximco Pte Ltd of Singapore Mr DD Gupta and party called on Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San at his office at 2 pm today.

They discussed purchasing beans and pulses from Myanmar and exports and imports matters.

Also present on the call were Managing Director Daw Khin Swe Soe of Cooperatives Exports and Imports Enterprise and officials.

(9) Art exhibition opens

YANGON, 17 Nov - An art exhibition was opened this morning at the Art Gallery of Myanmar Traditional Artists Asiayon, East Wing, Bogyoke Aung San Market.

Paintings of U Ba Nyan, U Ba Kyi, U Ba Yin Galay, U Sein, U Ohn Lwin, U Thaung Han, U Lun Kywe, U M Tin Aye, U Ba Lwin, U Aung Soe, U Ba Lon Lay and other artists are on display at the show.

Members of the Library, Museum and Exhibition Supervisory Committee previewed the show.

(10) Yangon Mayor meets Thai businessmen

YANGON, 17 Nov - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay met Mr Parn Weerasirl and party of Thaiwat Engineering Co Ltd of Thailand who called at his office at 2 pm today.

They discussed the tasks of YCDC.

Also present on the call were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win and committee members and heads of departments.
