(1) Secretary-2 receives DGM of China Tuhsu Hainan Imp & Exp Corp

YANGON, 11 Nov - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo received Deputy General Manager Mr Liu Guohua of China Tuhsu Hainan Imp & Exp Corp of the People's Republic of China and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9 am today.

Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel and Minister at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung were also present.

(2) YMEC to supply $ 10m worth of heavy equipment for Paunglaung Hydel Power Project

YANGON, 11 Nov - Yunnan Machinery & Equipment Corporation has agreed today to supply 96 units of heavy equipment worth US $ 10 million for Paunglaung Hydel Power Project.

This is the second agreement reached between YMEC of Yunnan Province, the People's Republic of China, and Myanma Electric Power Enterprise concerning Paunglaung Hydel Power Project, said Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Hut at the signing ceremony.

The primary agreement to buy US $ 160 million worth of machinery for the project was reached between the two enterprises here in 6 October 1998, he recounted.

Reaching of this agreement will further strengthen the existing bilateral friendship, cooperation and understanding between the two nations, he declared.

Designated as the national project, Paunglaung Hydel Power Project is being implemented by the leading committee led by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and comprising ministers, he said.

The government is making efforts for completion of the project as scheduled, if possible earlier than scheduled, he said.

Chairman of YMEC Mr Lin Zai You said his corporation will supply the most advanced Chinese-made equipment as well as modern machinery from Sweden, Finland, the United States and Japan. YMEC will work in accord with the contract for early completion of the underground hydel power station and for the entire plant he assured.

Managing Director of MEPE U Yan Naing also spoke.

Mr Lin Zai You and U Yan Naing signed the contract at the ministry.

Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minster at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials were also present.

(3) Yangon Division wins championship shield in Third ISD Women's Soccer Tournament

YANGON, 11 Nov - The third place and final matches of the Third Inter-State/Division Women's Soccer Tournament were held at Youth Among the spectators were Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint, Patron of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation Dr Khin Win Shwe and members, Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department and officials of the ministry.

Sagaing Division beat Mandalay Division 8-2 in third place match. Patron of MWSF Dr Khin Win Shwe presented Woman of the Match Award to Khin Thida Myint of Sagaing Division.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win presented championship shield to Yangon Division team.

(4) Bangladesh Foreign Minister arrives

YANGON, 11 Nov - At the invitation of U Ohn Gyaw, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Mr Abdus Samad Azad and party arrived here by air this evening.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador of People's Republic of Bangladesh to Myanmar Mr Jahangir Saadat and officials of the Embassy.

(5) Community peace and tranquillity and prevalence of law and order explained

YANGON, 11 Nov - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo explained community peace and tranquillity and prevalence of law and order to officials at the meeting hall of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) this morning.

Present were Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Col Hsan Hsint, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun, officials and guests.

The Secretary-2 said crimes were reduced as the responsible organizations are carrying out the tasks for community peace and tranquillity and prevalence of law and order in cooperation with the people. Only when measures for education, prevention, exposing and punishment are taken effectively and systematically will crimes be reduced, he said.

Prevent crimes and expose them, avoid concealment of cases to show crime reduction in the respective townships and expose real culprits as quickly as possible.

The Secretary-2 said ideas and procedures are to be changed in preventing crimes and prevalence of law and order while transforming the system.

He called for carrying out the tasks correctly and precisely so that administrative and judicial organizations would become the ones that people can rely on.

Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun and officials discussed crime prevention measures and action being taken on the situation community peace and tranquillity and prevalence of law and order in Yangon Division.

The Secretary-2 then gave instructions.

(6) Ponnagyun Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 11 Nov - The Executive Committee members and all members of Ponnagyun Township National League for Democracy were reported to have tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD out of their own volition on 16 October 1998.

Ponnagyun Township NLD was first formed on 19 November 1988 with 21 EC members but the number was reduced considerably due to transfer, resignations and other reasons. Out of 21 EC members, only 14 were left. The remaining EC members resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Ponnagyun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned. On 16 October, personnel of the Township NLD dissolved it by handing the signboard, seals and documents over to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office according to law.

(7) Cooperatives Trade Fair (Yangon) continues

YANGON, 11 Nov - Hailing the anniversary of the State Peace and Development Council, Cooperatives Trade Fair (Yangon) jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Cooperatives and Asia Plaza continued at the Asia Plaza Building at the corner of Bogyoke Aung San Road and Seikkantha Road for the tenth day today.

Chairman of Leading Committee for Holding of Cooperatives Trade Fair Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San arrived at the plaza this evening. He was welcomed by Chairman of Leading Committee Director-General of Cooperatives Department U Maung Hti and Managing Director of the Asia Plaza Dr Maung Maung Oo.

The minister visited the shops on the third floor of the plaza and he then gave instructions.

Shops of States and Divisions sold regional products such as men's longyis, women's chiek longyis, lacquerware, wooden sculpture and furniture.

Companies and cooperatives societies presented prizes to those who participated in the singing contest. The fair continues till 15 November.

(8) Minister for Health leaves to attend 4th Ministerial Level Meeting of SEA and the Pacific Region

YANGON, 11 Nov - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein left here by air this morning for Thailand to attend the 4th Ministerial Level Meeting of South-East-Asia and the pacific Region on Development of Children by the year 2000 to be held from 12 to 14 November in Bangkok.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar Mr Pensak Chatarak, heads of departments and officials of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and their relatives.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein was accompanied by Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Director-General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe, Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing, Director of Foreign Relations Section of the Ministry of Health Dr Ohn Kyaw and PSO to the Minister Captain Khun Htay Kyaw as members.

Resident Representative of UNICEF- Dr Junar Aguilar will attend the meeting.

They will discuss health, education, success of extended vaccination programme for children, establishment of nutrition centre and achievement of National Sanitation Week in Myanmar.

The ministers from 17 countries of South-East-Asia and the Pacific Region will attend the meeting.

(9) Amphetamine tablets, weapons seized in Tachilek

YANGON, 11 Nov - Acting on a tip-off, a combined team of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force members raided the house of Sai Lon, 28, son of U Sai Pyan, of Pahsat-Tawkot (Apyin) Village in Haunglek Village-tract, Tachilek Township, Shan State (East) on 24 October and found Sai Lon with his wife Ma Nang Sut, 30. In the ensuring search, the team found amphetamine tablets and weapons in the bath room and toilet attached to the bedroom upstairs.

The drugs and weapons seized were: 23,590 amphetamine tablets, a Hungary-made Browning pistol, Cal (7.65 mm), a Czechoslovakia-made pistol, VSOR 70 Cal (7.65 mm) (D/80231), one US-made .38 revolver, two 9-mm magazines, 32 rounds of .32 (spi) in silver colour ammunition, 15 rounds of .45 bronze colour ammunition, 50 rounds of 9-mm ammunition, 70 rounds of .22 ammunition (long), 20 rounds of .22 ammunition (short), 30 rounds of .32 ammunition, and two hand phones.

MPF Station in Tachilek has taken action against the couple.

(10) London Golf Tour on 19 to 22 November

YANGON, 11 Nov - The first round of London Golf Tour sponsored by Myanmar Golf Federation and Professional Golfers Association-PGA Myanmar will be held at Shwesayan Golf Club in Mandalay from 19 to 22 November.

Any professional golfers, amateur men's golfers at 0 to 12 handicaps and amateur ladies' golfers at 0 to 18 handicaps may participate in the tour.

The golfers wishing to take part in the tour may register at Shwesayan Golf Club in Mandalay not later than 2 pm on 17 November and may contact PGA Myanmar Phones 543207 and 548310 and extension 210.

(11) 78 German tourists arrive

YANGON, 11 Nov - Under the arrangement of Diethelm Travel Ltd, 78 German tourists including nine-member crew of Kreuzflug Round the World Air Cruise of Germany arrived here by chartered MD 83 McDonnel Douglas (twin jet) Cross Air yesterday morning.
