(1)   Merits shared for rebuilding of Shwedagon Pagoda Northern Stairway, installation of lifts and renovation of religious shrines

YANGON, 9 Nov - A ceremony to share merits for renovation of the Northern Stairway of the Shwedagon Pagoda, installation of lifts at the Northern Stairway and donation of southern Gandhakutitaik, lion statues on the Western Stairway and the Northern Stairway Stone Plaque was held at the Northern Stairway at 8 am today.

Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt supplicated on general renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda to the Sayadaws and presented alms to them.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Myingyan Koesaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and member Sayadaws, Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees, members of the Sangha and nuns as well as members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air)Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Ministers, the Chief Justice, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, Deputy Ministers, the Vice-Mayor, heads of department, members of the Shwedagon Pagoda General Renovation Leading Committee, the Work Committee members, well-wishers, members of the Board of Trustees and guests.

(2)   Secretary-1 attends opening of Myanmar-Japan Bilateral Conference on Information Technology Cooperation

YANGON, 9 Nov - A ceremony to open Myanmar-Japan Bilateral Conference on Information Technology Cooperation jointly organized by Myanmar Computer Federation and Centre of the International Cooperation for Computerization(CICC) of Japan was held at the International Business Centre this afternoon, addressed by Chairman of Myanmar Computer Science Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai, President of CICC Mr Takuma Yamamoto, Executive Director Mr Yamazaki and members, members of the Executive Committee of MCF, members of Executive Committee of MCF, members of Executive Committee of Myanmar Computer Scientists Association, Myanmar Computer Industries Association and Myanmar Computer Enthusiasts Association and members and specially invited guests.

(3)   Works for development of Shan State (East) regions coordinated

YANGON, 9 Nov - A Coordination meeting on development of Shan State (East)regions was held at the meeting hall of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief(Army) this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

It was also attended by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Transport Thura U Thaung Lwin, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and other officials.

(4)   Trade, Economic and Business Related Training for Senior Myanmar Officials concludes

YANGON, 9 Nov - The closing session of Trade, Economic and Business Related Training for Senior Myanmar Officials jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and Singapore Trade Development Board was held at the Ministry of Commerce this evening, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Present also were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Commander of No 4 Military Region Commandant of Defence Services Record Office Col Myo Myint, Advisers at the Ministry of Commerce, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow and President of the Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry U Khin Maung Yi and officials.

(5)   Cultural exchange ceremony between MMCWA and WFWP of Japan

YANGON, 9 Nov - Cultural exchange ceremony jointly sponsored by Myanmar Maternal and child Welfare Association and Women's Federation for World Peace of Japan(WFWP)was held at the Multi-purpose building of MMCWA at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

Present were also advisers, Chairperson of the WFWP Ms Hokkaido and members and trainees of tailoring and cooking courses.

Japanese women team presented Japanese dances and songs. Demonstration of making paper toy, flower arrangements and setting table for tea were performed.

Ms Hokkaido and Ms Shizuoka donated two weighing machines and K 120,000 for MMCWA. Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Dr Khin Win Shwe accepted them and presented certificates of honour.

EC members of MMCWA presented gifts to WFWP. Artistes entertained the guests with Myanma traditional dances and songs.

(6)   27 NLD members of Waingmaw resign

YANGON, 6 Nov - Twenty-seven members of National League for Democracy Waingmaw Township resigned from the party on 18 September 1998.

As the 27, chairman of Kachin state NLD and member of Waingmaw Township NLD U La Lat Jum, U Bran Dee, U S Bran Mai. Daw Dai Lan, Daw Zaung Chaw, Daw Hai Male, U Lang Yaw, U Bawm Hsaung, U Bawm Ki, U Bon Yein, Daw Lang Wan, Daw Khaw Ban, U Teint Bwamb, Daw Faw Kunt Kawt, U Nara Ran, U Indra Bahadu, U Tajh Chandra, U Khin Malarl, U Nara Hari, U Sinpra Sub, U Khana Bahadu, U Jit Bahadu, U Khama Nanda, U Poona Bahadu, U Kub Bahadu, U Darl Madoch and U R Jum, have no more wish to participate in political activities of NLD, they on their own volition had made the resignation by sending letters of resignation to Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Commission Office of Kachin State Multi-party Democracy General Election Commission and the respective party headquarters and resigned.

(7)   Myanmar golfer wins first, second prizes in 11th Women's Amateur Invitational Golf

YANGON, 9 Nov - Myanmar golfer Ma Khin Thu Thu won the first prize in the handicap play and the second prize in the scratch play with a three-day total of 226 strokes in the 11th Women's Amateur Invitational Golf Tournament in Puynu City, Gwandong Province, the People's Republic of China.

Ma Khin Thu Thu competed with 68 golfers of the PRC, Singapore, Germany and Japan at Lotus Hill Golf Course 28-30 October.

She also won the first prizes in both handicap and scratch events last year.

(8)   Students visit Exhibition '98 - To Revitalize and Foster Patriotic spirit

YANGON, 9 Nov - Students, teachers, Red Cross members, foreigners and the public visited Exhibition '98 - To Revitalize and Foster Patriotic Spirit at Tatmadaw Convention Hall today.

The ninth day exhibition was visited by student and teachers of Latha Township Basic Education High School 1, Mayangon Township BEHS 2, Shwepyitha Township BEMS 1, Lahta Township BEPS 1 and Latha Township BEPS 2, members of Dagon Township Red Cross Brigade, personnel of Customs Department, members of the Sangha, foreigners and the people.

The exhibition opens from 9 am to 5 pm daily till 30 November.

(8)   Minister for Commerce meets managing Director of M/S Myanmar-Bangladesh Fisheries Ltd

YANGON, 9 Nov - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met Managing Director Mr Syed Mahmudul Hug of M/S Myanmar-Bangladesh Fisheries Ltd and party together with Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Janangir Saadat at his office this afternoon.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, advisers, director-general of the Trade Department and officials.
