(5)   Attitude of political parties

Twenty national race groups which made peace with the government have already issued declarations on their attitude in connection with the call of the National League for Democracy to convene the Hluttaw.

Similarly, political parties legally in existence are issuing declarations on their respective attitudes in connection with the call of the National League for Democracy to convene the Hluttaw and they will be made public.

Today, a translation of the declaration on the attitude of National Unity Party released on 30-10-98 is stated-as follows;

Attitude of National Unity Party
30-10-98

1. Considering the changing internal and external developments, the National Unity Party firmly believes that peace, stability and national unity are truly essential for serving the interests of the national races residing in the Union of Myanmar.

2. The firm conviction of the National Unity Party is that the strength of the nation lies within. It believes that internal problems can be solved through coordination among the internal forces themselves completely free from outside interference and dictates. It also believes that the most suitable place for finding a solution is at the National Convention.

3. It understands that the National League for Democracy's attack on the ruling government with reliance on foreign elements, its demand for convening of the Hluttaw and carrying out of activities after forming the 10-member Hluttaw representative committee will not serve the interest of the nation but will be harmful to the nation; moreover such acts will invite foreign interference.

4. Hence, the National Unity Party absolutely (absolutely) opposes those acts of the National League for Democracy.
