(1) Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Algeria

YANGON, 1 Nov - On the occasion of the National Day of the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria, which falls on 1 November 1998, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Liamine Zeroual, President of the State of the Democratic Popular Republic of Algeria.

(2) Minister for Foreign Affairs sends felicitations to Algeria

YANGON, 1 Nov - On the occasion of the National Day of the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria, which falls on I November 1998, His Excellency U Ohn Gyaw. Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria.

(3) Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing attend 35th Kathina robes offering ceremony of Taunggyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik

YANGON, 31 Oct - The 35th Kathina robes offering ceremony of Taunggyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik was held at the Sarthintaik on Thathanayeiktha Street in Bahan Township this morning, attended by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing. Present also were Padana Nayaka Sayadaw of Taunggyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Ottama and members of the Sangha, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council, ministers, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary, Joint-Secretary and committee members, heads of department, lay-persons and well-wishers.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and dignitaries received the Five Precepts from Padana Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ottama.

Members of the Sangha recited the Parittas.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing Kathina offered Kathina robes and alms to Padana Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ottama.

Chairman of Yangon Division Sangha Nayaka Committee Bhaddanta Ko-salla delivered a sermon.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and dignitaries shared merits for their good deeds.

After the ceremony, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing showered confetti.

(4) Secretary-l meets national race leaders of Northern Shan State Region 3

YANGON, 31 Oct - Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary- I of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received national race leaders of Northern Shan Region 3 U Hsay Htin and U Kai Hpa, members U Hkay Tai and U Sai Tun Maung at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 4 pm today.

They discussed progress of transport, agriculture, wood-based industry and commerce and development of the region.

Also present at the call were Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Director-General of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt Col Pe Nyein, heads of department and officials.

(5) Attitude of political parties

Twenty national race groups which made peace with the government have already issued declarations on their attitude in connection with the call of the National League for Democracy to convene the Hluttaw.

Similarly, political parties legally in existence are issuing declaration their respective attitudes in connection with the call of the National League for Democracy to convene the Hluttaw and they will be made public.

Today, a translation of the declaration on the attitude of Lahu National Development Party released on 28-10-98 is as follows:

1. Our Lahu National Development Party is a party permitted to be formed legally with Exemption Registration No 209 issued by the Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission on 28 February 1989. It is currently a political party legally recognized by the government. The delegate of the party is attending the National Convention sponsored by the government and the party is marching on the path of the National Convention for emergence of a modern, developed democratic State.

2. We assess that the National League for Democracy's formation of "Hluttaw representative committee" and attempts to convene Hluttaw are unlawful acts as they oppose and confront the government. Their activities not only disrupt the- aspired goal for emergence of a modern, developed democratic State but also mar peaceful and stable conditions which have been acquired at present.

3. Hence, we hereby declare that we never ever support the National League for Democracy's formation of Hluttaw representative committee, activities to convene Hluttaw, similar acts opposing the government and any other acts to disrupt the present situation of peace and stability, and that we will continue to cooperate with the government on the path of the National Convention with the leadership of the government for emergence of a modern, developed democratic State and for all-round development of Lahu nationals.

(6) Commander attends second four-monthly work coordination meeting of Mandalay Division Myanmar Police Force

YANGON, 31 Oct - Mandalay Division Police Force and Central Training Division of Myanmar Police Force held second four-monthly work coordination meeting for 1998 at the Central Training Division in Mandalay on 29 October morning.

It was attended by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Mayor of Mandalay Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi, Secretary of Mandalay City Development Committee Col Aye Tun Shwe, Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Ohn, Commissioner of Mandalay Division U Tin Aye, Commander of Mandalay- Division Police Force Police Col Myint Kyaw and departmental officials, commanders of district and township MPF and instructors of the Central Training Division.

The commander and party went to Taungpyinhtilintaik of Chanmyathazi Township.

They paid homage to Maha Muni Yokeshindaw Yedaw Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panavamsa of Taungpyinhtilintaik, and offered ten sets of Kathina robes and 10 blankets to the Sayadaw.

Next, they attended the communal Kathina robes offering ceremony of the commander and wife and family, Mandalay Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Mandalay Division Working Committee for Women's Affair at Pebinmasoeyein Kyaungtaik, Pyigyidagun Township, Mandalay.

(7) Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families and well-wishers present dry rations to Sarthintaiks, Nunnery in Bahan Township

YANGON, 31 Oct - Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families and well-wishers Presented dry rations to Ngahtatgyi Sarthintaik and Webyan Sarthintaik in Bahan Township this morning.

Present were Minister at he Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Vice Adjutant General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, senior Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) officers, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental heads, chairmen of district, township and Peace and Development Councils and members, members of Township and Ward Union Solidarity and Development Association and Maternal and Child Welfare Association, guests and well-wishers.

Congregation received the Five Precepts from Lecturer Nayaka Sayadaw Sasanadhaja Thiri Pavara Dhammacariya Bhaddanta Tejaniya of Webyan Sarthintaik.

(8) Minister inspects Thanlyin Tin Refinery, Salt Mill

YANGON, 31 Oct - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint inspected the Tin Refinery of No 2 Mining Enterprise in Thanlyin yesterday. After inspecting the production works, he gave suggestions to the personnel and workers on the innovations to be able to run the refinery all year round, security and beautifying of the compound and staff welfare.

He later proceeded to the Thakayta Salt Mill of Myanma Salt and Marine Chemical Enterprise. He inspected packaging, transport and production of export salt. Meeting the personnel and Workers, he told them that the mill would make progress if they made innovations and had keen interest in their work. He lauded them for their efforts for boosting production and left suggestions on beautifying of the compound. He later inspected production and packaging of re-dehydration salt at the Research Division of Chaconne Salt Station.

(9) DG of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism visits Mon State Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 31 Oct - Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt, General Manager of Hotels and Tourism Services U Htay Aung and tourism entrepreneurs visited Mon State and Taninthayi Division from 26 to 30 October.

They left here by car for Bago Township and inspected renovation of Shwewatun Hotel in Bago on 26 October.

Director-General U Khin Maung Latt and party left Mawlamyine on 27 October morning and inspected the war cemetery for soldiers fallen during the World War II in Thanbyuzayat and the site of Myanmar-Thailand rail road.

They also inspected Maungmakan beach and Nateintaung Camp on 28 October.

Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung received Director General U Khin Maung Latt and party at Dawei Guest House on 29 October morning.

The commander attended to their needs. The Director-General and party arrived back in Mawlamyine in the evening. They went to Hpa-an and arrived back here yesterday evening.

(10) Minister attends prize distribution ceremonies of sports contests

YANGON, 31 Oct - Minister for Sports Brig Gen Sein Win attended conclusion of Track and Field Contest to mark the Year of Women in Athletics 1998 and accepted cash donated by well-wishers at Aung San Stadium today.

Also present were leader of the panel patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation Dr Khin Win Shwe and members, Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department and officials, President of Myanmar Track & Field Federation Lt-Col Ohn Maung Maung and executives and athletes.

Then, 18 well-wishers donated K 3.02 millions toward fund of MTFF to Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win.

Dr Khin Win Shwe presented prizes to winners of over-40 women's, hurdle's event. Member of the panel of patrons Daw Khin Cho Oo also presented prizes to winners of over-35 women's hurdle's event.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win then attended prize presentation ceremony of the Fifth Inter-Ministries Myanmar Traditional Martial Art Contest at National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna today.

(11) Cleaning work carried out nationwide to mark School and Environment Cleanliness Day

YANGON, 31 Oct - The Ministry of Education is implementing education promotion programmes that contribute towards peace and tranquillity, modernization and development. Cleanliness of the school and its environs is just a task and cleaning work was carried out simultaneously today at basic education schools nationwide after designating October 31, 1998 as School and Environment Cleanliness Day.

Altogether 30,000 teachers and about 6.8 million students from 925 basic education high, 2,100 middle and 35,881 primary schools in the country carried out work

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and officials visited No 1 Basic Education High School in Lanmadaw, No 1 BEHS in Latha, No 2 BEHS in Dagon, No 1 BEHS in Bahan Townships.

A total of 4,500 including students, teachers, members of School Welfare Committee and PTA carried out cleaning work at No 1 BEHS in Dagon Township.
