(1) Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to President of Czech Republic

YANGON, 28 Oct - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Vaclav Havel, President of the Czech Republic, on the occasion of the Anniversary of the National Day of the Czech Republic which falls on 28 October 1998.

(2) Secretary-l met local authorities and departmental personnel in Mandalay

YANGON, 27 Oct - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met local authorities and departmental personnel and coordinated agricultural work and production of import substitutes and inspected regional development in Mandalay yesterday.

Accompanied by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Education U- Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, officials of State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments and officials, the Secretary-1 left here by air yesterday morning for Mandalay.

On arrival at Mandalay at 9.30 am, he was welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Mayor of Mandalay Brig-Gen Yan Thein, military and civilian officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and families.

(3) Private entrepreneurs urged to cooperate with the Government in striving for development of nation

YANGON, 27 Oct - A coordination meeting on granting permits to private entrepreneurs who wish to make investments in reclamation of wetlands in Yangon and Ayeyawady Division and carrying out farming there was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Col Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station of Yangon Division, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, directors-general, managing directors and officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, member of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commissioner of Ayeyawady Division U Myo Tun, chairmen and members of Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar Rice Millers Association, Myanmar Rice Wholesale Merchants Association, Beans and Pulses and Sesame Merchants Association, Myanmar Edible Oil Dealers Association and private entrepreneurs.

Deputy Director-General of Agriculture Planning Department Dr Kyi Win read the list of associations and private entrepreneurs.

(4) Deputy Prime Minister meets UNESCO Special Goodwill Ambassador

YANGON, 27 Oct - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met vocalist and video star and UNESCO Special Goodwill Ambassador Mr Ryotaro Sugi of Japan who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Present at the call were officials of the Government's Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and MIC Office.

(5) Site chosen for construction of bridge across Hline River inspected

YANGON, 27 Oct - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Minister U Tint Swe inspected the site for construction of a bridge across Hline River in Myaungtaga Village this afternoon.

Director-General of Waterways Department U Pe Than reported on the waterways and Deputy Minister U Tint Swe on the choice of preliminary site and survey of the depth with the use of JFF 541 Echo Sounder.

The commander, the minister and party inspected the suitable sites for construction of the bridge in Kywegu, Myaungtaga, Myochaung, Gyogon, Thayagon and Alainle Villages along Hline River by boat.

The commander and party gave instructions on systematic survey of the site and report thereon.

(6) About 3m stimulant tablets seized

YANGON, 27 Oct - A combined team including members of regional intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and Customs Department, acting on information, searched a car, lKhagway/ 6098, driven by Han Thein, and spareman Wai Lwin Oo, at Sint-in Checkpoint near Lashio Township, Shan State (North), on 19 September.

The authorities seized WY and 99 brands of stimulant tablets totalling 2,890,000 weighing 260.1 kilos being carried in secret drawers of the car, in the roof and in the bottom of sound box.

Action has been taken against Han Thein, 35, son of U Tun Sein, No 5/A-3, Myothit 73rd Street, near the airport, Mandalay, and Wai Lwin Oo, 34, son of U Tun Shein, 5/A-2, Myothit 69/70th Street, Mandalay, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(7) Sugar milling, construction of reservoirs inspected in Bago Division

YANGON, 27 Oct - Minister for-Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and departmental officials inspected sugar production at No 1 Pyinmana Sugar Mill on 24 October.

The minister also inspected the process at No 2 Sugar Mill and gave instructions on production of quality sugar and boosting production.

The minister went to the site of Swa Creek Reservoir Project near Baungtoke Village in Yedashe Township.

The minister inspected the progress of construction work at the site.

The reservoir project on Swa Creek is part of Sittoung Valley Development Project.

The dam will be able to irrigate 35,000 acres of farmland and 55,000 acres of crops and prevent flooding.

The minister inspected Oktwin Sugar Mill Project in Oktwin Township and storage and supply of water at the dam near Letpankhon Village.

On 25 October, the minister and Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Tin Aye inspected construction of Mazin Reservoir near Bago.

The Mazin Reservoir will be able to irrigate 650 acres of farmland and supply water to the town and factories.

The minister next inspected harvesting of paddy with the use of harvesting machines on the farm of U Thant Zin in Kyungalay Village, Hlegu Township.

The minister also visited the venue where pesticides and crops were on display at Kyungalay paddy purchase depot.

(8) Film industry historical museum to open soon

YANGON, 27 Oct - Members of Library, Museum and Exhibition Supervisory Committee this morning previewed historic film equipment, academy awards, films of Silver, Golden, Diamond and Ruby Jubilees, photos of actors and actresses, posters, documentary photographs of Myanmar animation films and other showrooms at Myanma Motion Picture History Museum of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon.

Secretary of the committee U Myint Than Aung presented the permit to Chairman of Committee for emergence of Myanmar Motion Picture History Museum Al U Hla Myo.

The museum will open soon.

(9) Minister inspects power plants in Hlawga Ahlon

YANGON, 27 Oct - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, accompanied by Chief Engineer Dr San Oo of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise, inspected Hlawga Combined Cycle Power Plant Construction Project, Ywama Power Plant and Ahlon Combined Cycle Power Plant Construction Project.

The minister inspected the sites of construction projects and gave instructions to minimize loss and wastage in carrying the work, to prevent occupational hazards, to complete the projects before the scheduled time, to run power generators with full capacity based on availability of natural gas and to produce spare parts so as to be substituted in machines.

(10) Outstanding students honoured

YANGON, 27 Oct - The Union Solidarity and Development Association of Aungmyay Thazan Township, Mandalay, held its fifth prize distribution ceremony for outstanding students in the tenth standard examination for 1997-98 academic year on 25 October morning.

Present were Secretary of USDA (Central) Minister for Culture U Win Sein, member of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commissioner U Tin Aye, divisional officials, Secretary of Mandalay Division USDA U Tin Maung Oo, executives, secretaries and ECs of District and Township USDAs, students, parents and guests.

Secretary of USDA (Central) Minister U Win Sein spoke on the occasion.

Minister U Win Sein, presented K 50,000 donated by Sagaing Division USDA, to the secretary of Aungmyay Thazan Township USDA.

After the prize distribution ceremony, 5-D winner in the tenth standard examination Maung Zani Linn Tun of Basic Education High School No 1 who stood sixth in the whole country and first in Mandalay Division expressed his thanks.

There were three five distinction, 10 four-distinction, 30 three-distinction and 20 all-round outstanding performance award winners totalling 63.

(11) Minister meets Chairman of Mercantile South East Asia Petroleum

YANGON, 27 Oct - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi met Chairman of Canada Mercantile South East Asia Petroleum Inc Mr Robert F Goods who called at his office this afternoon.

They discussed Myanmar oil and gas matters.

Present at the call were Deputy Ministers U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Director-General U Soe Myint of Energy Planning Department and Managing Director U Kyaw Nyein of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise.
