(1) The 45th communal Kathina robes offering of the Ministry of Defence

YANGON, 24 Oct - The 45th communal Kathina robes offering of the Ministry of Defence was held at the hall of the ministry this morning.

Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing presented Kathina robes and offertories to members of the Sangha.

Present were member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee led by Chairman Abhidaja Maha Ratha Guru Abhidaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Myingyanmyo Koehsaung Taik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita, members of the Sangha of Alanpyaphaya Kyaung, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Commodore Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, wives of the members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, Yangon Mayor, directors and senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence and guests.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Myingyanmyo Koehsaung Taik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita.

(2) Masses of Myeik region of Taninthayi Division vow to fight destructive elements

YANGON, 24 Oct - Over 23,000 people from various strata of life from Myeik region of Taninthayi Division expressed their genuine desire at a mass meeting held at the People's Sports Ground in Myeik Township this morning.

Present were members of Red Cross Brigade, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Taninthayi Division Women ' s Affairs Committee, Union Solidarity and Development Association, Fisheries Entrepreneurs Association, Writers and Journalist Association, Medical Association, Nurses Association, War Veteran's Organization, Trawlers Association, Merchants Association, Industrial Entrepreneurs Association, Traditional Artistes and Artisans Asiayon, Thabin Asiayon, Vehicles Association, Shopkeepers Association, Inland Freight Handling Workers Association, Rubber Entrepreneurs Association, Dry Betel Nuts Trading Association, Cashew Nuts Entrepreneurs Association, Slow Moving Vehicles Association, Rice Dealers Association, Rice Millers Association, Saw Millers Association, Bamboo and Thatch Works Association, Motor-cycle Owners Association, Cottage Industries Entrepreneurs Association, Goldsmith Workers Association, Ice Factory Owners Association, Dried Fish Entrepreneurs Association, Livestock Breeding Entrepreneurs Association, Companies' Staff Association and people of 12 wards in Myeik Township, Pulaw, Kyunsu and Taninthayi Townships.

(3) Myanmar Veterinary Association holds Seventh Conference

YANGON, 24 Oct - The Seventh Veterinary Conference organized by Myanmar Veterinary Association was held in Yangon University Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road here this afternoon with an address by Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, resident representatives of UN agencies, patrons and members of the Committee for Organizing the Seventh Veterinary Conference, members of Myanmar Veterinary Association and guests.

(4) Secretary-l inspects preparations of Exhibition to Revitalize and Foster Patriotic Spirit

YANGON, 24 Oct - Patron of Organizing Committee of Exhibition to Revitalize and Foster Patriotic Spirit Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected preparations for the exhibition at Tatmadaw Convention Hall this afternoon.

The Secretary-1, accompanied by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko lay and officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, on arrival at the hall, was welcomed by Chairman of Organizing Committee of Exhibition to Revitalize and Foster Patriotic Spirit Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and members of Leading Committee and subcommittees.

The Secretary-l inspected preparations for the exhibition. He was conducted round by Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and officials.

The Secretary-1 then gave necessary instructions.

(5) Secretary-l fetes participants in Int'l Symposium on Interaction for Progress: Myanmar in ASEAN

YANGON, 24 Oct - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel at 7 pm today in honour of those who attended the International Symposium on Interaction for Progress: Myanmar in ASEAN, sponsored by the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence, Information and Resource Centre of Singapore and Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan at Sedona Hotel on 23 and 24 October.

Also present at the dinner were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, Mayor of Yangon City, deputy ministers, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and heads of departments of OSS, senior military officers, retired scholars, advisers to the ministries, rectors, pro-rectors and professors of the universities, diplomats of foreign embassies, officials of Information and Resource Centre of Singapore and Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan, departmental officials, officials of NGOs and guests.

(6) Workshop on production and use of firewood substitute fuel begins

YANGON, 24 Oct - The workshop on production and use of firewood substitute fuel, sponsored by the Ministry of Forestry, began in Tawwin Hall of the Forest Department this morning with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Lt-Gen Tin Oo stressed the importance of preservation of trees and forests.

Quoting the guidance of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, he said preservation of trees and forests means that of soil, water and weather, and if forests are decimated, soil, water and weather will go to rack and ruin, and added tasks for production and use of firewood substitute fuel are to be implemented in time for nine arid zone greening work and preservation of trees and forests.

Now, the nine arid zone greening tasks are being implemented effectively in accord with the guidance of Senior General Than Shwe, and up to 13 districts could be extended, he said and added so as to be able to pay special attention to implementation of the arid zone greening tasks, the Arid Zone Greening Department has been set up.

The year 1995 has been designated as firewood substitute fuel year, he stated and remarked the tasks to distribute firewood substitute fuel, carried out by the North West Command, the Directorate of Resettlement of the Ministry of Defence and Camp Commandant's Office of the Ministry of Defence, are found effective and successful.

He spoke of the need for all to tackle the problems by using the results gained from the workshop and called for participation of private entrepreneurs in implementing tasks for the use of firewood substitute fuel throughout the country.

Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone also made a speech.

Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected production work of firewood substitute fuel and samples of briquettes.

Eight papers on production and use of firewood substitute fuel will be Submitted at the workshop.

(7) Over K 530,000 worth of assistance provided for peace group

YANGON, 24 Oct - The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries provided poultry and pigs of quality strain, feedstuff, medicine and farming equipment worth over K 530,000 for the group led by Phado Aung San who exchanged arms for peace, under the programme of the sub-committee for the development and breeding work at the border area at New Peace Village of Phayagon Village, Hpa-an, Kayin State, on 21 October morning.

Commander of the South East Command Brig-Gen Myint Aung, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Saw Khin Soe made speeches.

Then, Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win presented poultry and pigs of quality strain, feedstuff medicine and farming equipment to Phado Aung San.

Phado Aung San spoke to thank the officials.

The commander, the ministers and party inspected the breeding farm, the primary school and New Peace Village.

(8) Sarawak beat YCDC 1-0

YANGON, 24 Oct - The second-round match of Yangon City Development Committee soccer team of Myanmar and Sarawak FC of Malaysia in the Ninth Asian Clubs Soccer Tournament 1998/99 was played at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this afternoon.

Among the spectators were Mayor of Yangon City U Ko Lay, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, senior military officers, Ambassador of Malaysia and other diplomats, Match Supervisor of Asian Football Confederation Mr KT Velu of Singapore and officials.

Sarawak FC beat YCDC team 1-0.

(9) Brunei Minister, leaves for home

YANGON, 24 Oct - President of Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Council (SEAMEC) of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Minister of Education of Brunei Darussalam Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Haji Abdul Aziz Umar and wife, who came on a visit at the invitation of Minister for Education U Than Aung, and directors of SEAMEO Regional Centres left here by air this afternoon.
