(1)   Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions conclude successfully

YANGON, 19 Oct - The prize distribution of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions was held at the National Theatre on Myomakyaung Street this afternoon, with an address by Patron of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions Organizing Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The State-sponsored competition was held here with the objectives-to rekindle in all nationals, including youths, patriotism and nationalist fervour, to revitalize Myanmar culture and fine arts, to bring to the fore once again Myanmar music, Myanmar dance and to hold Myanmar national pride and prestige high, to see to reflourishing of genuine Myanmar traditional performing arts, to contribute to the spiritual development of youths and to prevent infiltration of alien culture, from 1 to 16 October.

Present were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council, Ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the Yangon Mayor, members of Panel of Patron of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions, senior officers of the Ministry of Defence, the deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, the director-general of the office of the State Peace and Development Council and officials, departmental heads, diplomats and military attaches, resident representatives of UN agencies, Chairman of Leading Committee for Organizing Competitions and members, Chairmen of Work Committees and Sub-committees and members, guests, members of Panel of Judges, managers of States and Divisions and contestants.

Daw Tin Tin Mya, U Hla Win and Daw Ling Maung Pan of Myanma Radio and Television emceed.

Patron of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions Organizing Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address. (Reported separately)

The Secretary-1 presented first, second and third prizes to winners in men's professional, amateur, higher education levels, boy's basic education (age 15-20), (age 10-15) and (age 5-10) levels at Maha Gita song contest.

The Secretary-3 presented first, second and third prizes to winners in women's professional level, amateur level and higher education level at Maha Gita song contest.

YANGON, 19 Oct - The first Kathina robe offering ceremony of Aung Myaybawdi Dhamma Yeiktha Alodawpyi Kyaungtaik (Yangon)was held at the Kyaungtaik in Pin Shwenyaung Street, Tamwaylay Ward in Tamway Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Khin Win Shwe.

Present also were Padana Nayaka Sayadaw of Mingala Thukha Kyaungtaik State Working Committee of the Sangha Bhaddanta Nyanamyinzu, Aung Myaybawdi Dhamma Yeiktha Alodawpyi Sayadaw Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa and members of the Sangha, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Military Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister U Than Shwe and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Col Than Zin, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, well-wishers and guests.

Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa administered the Five Precepts.

Members of the Sangha recited the Parittas.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Khin Win Shwe offered Kathina robes and alms to Alodawpyi Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa.

The minister and well-wishers also offered Kathina robes and alms to members of the Sangha.

Afterwards, Mandalaymyo Masoeyein Taikthit Nayaka Sayadaw Ashin Susitabhivamsa (Tha-Sa-Ah Dhammasariya) delivered a sermon.

After the ceremony, officials showered confetti to mark the success of the ceremony.

(3)   Mann Creek Reservoir in Ngaphe Township commissioned as 91st facility since 1988

YANGON, 19 Oct - The Mann Creek Reservoir in Ngaphe Township, Minbu District, built by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation was commissioned today with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

At the ceremony held at the pandal near the reservoir, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the reservoir to be commissioned was one built across the Mann Creek. He said the facility would irrigate over 47,000 acres thereby benefiting farmers in the area. It would therefore be an important facility for the nation and the region. Building of the reservoir, he said, is a significant undertaking not only for agricultural development but also for laying a foundation to improve the living standards of farmers.

(4)   Greening of Tankyitaung in progress

YANGON, 19 Oct - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the tree-planting ceremony for greening of Tankyitaung and inspected construction of Taunggyi-Magway Railroad Construction Project yesterday.

He was accompanied by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments.

They flew to Bagan NyaungU and arrived there at 8.15 am.

They were welcomed there by Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Commander of No 88 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aye Kyaw, Commander of No 101 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw and departmental personnel.

On arrival at Tankyi taung tree-planting ceremony, they were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun and local people.

(5)   Communal Kathina held for missionary Sayadaw

YANGON, 19 Oct - Disciples of Missionary Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Panadipa of Kyaikhtizaung Pagoda, Zokethok village, Bilan Township, Mon State, held a communal Kathina at Supreme Court Dhammayon, Gyatawya Street, Bahan Township, this morning.

Present to pay respects to Sayadaws were Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear Admiral Nyunt Thien and wife, Chief Justice U Aung Toe and wife, Attorney-General U Tha Tun and wife, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and wife Daw Khin Khin Lay, Patron of Religious Affairs Committee U Khin Shwe (Zaykaba) and wife Daw San San Kywe, Justice U Aung Myint and others.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panadipa administered the Five Precepts.

The disciples presented robes and offertories to the Sayadaws.

(6)   Ministry of Energy holds fifth communal Kathina robes offering

YANGON, 19 Oct - With the patronage of Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi and wife the fifth communal Kathina robes offering of the Ministry of Energy was held at Son-in Dhammayon on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Present were members of the Sangha led by Presiding Sayadaw of Sadu Kyaungtaik in Kyimyindaing Township Maha Sanghadaja Siripavara Dhammacariya Digabandaka Diganikaya Dhammacariya Bhaddanta Pannavamsa, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi and wife Daw Khin Mar Aye, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Ministers for Energy U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, the directors-general and managing directors under the Ministry of Energy, departmental officials and families.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannavamsa administered the Five Precepts and members of the Sangha recited Parittas.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi and wife and service personnel presented Kathina robes to the members of the Sangha. The Sayadaw then delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

Next, 'soon' was offered to the members of the Sangha.

The ministry donated 26 padethabins worth a total of K 1,072,729 to the Kyaungtaik.

(7)   'Soon' offered to 1,000 members of the Sangha

YANGON, 19 Oct - Xuonhua Chinese Buddhist Association offered 'soon' to 1,000 members of the Sangha and donated a corolla van (2Ka/6958) to be used for missionary purpose to the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee at Maha Pathana Cave, Kaba Aye, this morning.

Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Ratha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhama Jotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita administered the Five Precepts to the congregation.

Then, Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited Parittas.

Leader of the association Mr Wuwon handed over documents related to the Corolla van to Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin.

Secretary Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Ratha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhama Jotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained for the good deeds.

(8)   Roads, bridges inspected in Kachin State

YANGON, 19 Oct - Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials inspected roads and bridges on Myitkyina-Bhamo Road in Waingmaw Township on 17 October.

The minister and party inspected testing of soil, choice of place for construction of bridge across Mali Creek and current condition of transport.

The minister then attended to the requirements.

The minister went to the site for construction of new bridge across Nanhsan Creek where officials reported on work.

(9)   Minister for Cooperatives tours Hakha, Kalay

YANGON, 19 Oct - Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San met officials and personnel of Chin State Cooperative Department and Hakha Township Cooperative Department in Hakha, Chin State, on 17 October.

The Acting Assistant Director of Chin State Cooperative Department reported to the minister on the set-up of the cooperative societies, implementation of projects, health care services and staff welfare.

The minister spoke about settling of the loans from the bank, emergence of cooperative societies in accord with the market-oriented economy, and efforts needed for evolving into the societies that will provide support for national economy.

Later, the minister inspected the shops of Seinbanbya Coop Society Ltd, Hakha GEC (Education) Coop Society and Chin State GEC and gave instructions to the officials and personnel.

Yesterday, Minister U Aung San proceeded to Kalay in Sagaing Division where he met chairmen of the Boards of Directors and members of the cooperative syndicates and personnel of Kalay Township Cooperative Department at Kalay Township Cooperative Department Office.

First, Staff Officer of Township Cooperative Department U Ba Shwe explained the services in the township.

The minister said the coop societies should not rely solely on the government and need to strive their utmost to achieve their aims with honesty and cooperation.

He called for efforts for regular progress of the Co-op Societies in the township based on the rules and disciplines and bringing about regional development through the means of the cooperative sector.

Afterwards, the minister inspected the stores of Pinlon Trading Cooperative Society, Kalay District GEC and Mya Sein Yaung Lwinbyin General Trading Cooperative Society.

(10)  Tender jade sales fetch over $ 1.12m

YANGON, 19 Oct - Mid-Year Gems Emporium sold 207 jade lots at $ 1,124,399 under tender system today, with 360 merchants checking gems and jade lots.

Auction sale of jade lots continues tomorrow.

Patron of Myanma Gems Emporium Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint inspected the sale today.

Jewellery and jade figurines worth $ 27,327 were also sold today.

Accompanied by Chairman of Myanmar Gems Emporium Central Committee Deputy Minister U Myint Thein, Secretary Managing Director of Myanmar Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and officials, the minister inspected jewellery of Myanmar Ves Joint-Venture, jade and gems carving, jewellery and jade figurines of MGE, private jewellery shops and painting shops on the ground floor and jade blocks in the compound of Gems Mart.

He also cordially conversed with local and foreign merchants.
