(1)   Masses of Shan State (South) condemn destructive activities of NLD group

YANGON, 15 Oct - Over 33,000 people of various strata of life from Shan State (South) expressed their genuine desire at a mass meeting which was held in Taunggyi Township People's Sports Ground this morning.

Present were members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Shan State (South) Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Shan Traditional Cultural Troupe, PaO Literature and Cultural Troupe, members of Shan State (South) Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Society, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Religious Association, Teachers Training School, Shan State (South) Nurses Association, Shan State (South) Medical Association, Artists and Artisans Asiayon, Brokerage Association, Edible Oil Merchants Association, Rice Merchants Association, Industrialists Association, All Bus Lines Control Committee, Construction Material Shop Entrepreneurs Association, representatives of 18 Social and Economic Associations and people of Taunggyi District and Taunggyi Township.

The meeting also tabled and seconded two motions calling for safeguarding and maintaining economic development and ensuring food, clothing and shelter needs of the people and maintaining and safeguarding the stability of the State which has already been achieved.

Representative of mass meeting U Son Kyaing chaired it with PaO national U Khun Tun Lwin and representative of Inlay Region U Than Maung Chon as members of the Panel of Chairmen.

(2)   ASEAN Steering Committee discusses preparations for Sixth ASEAN Summit

YANGON, 15 Oct - Chairman of the ASEAN Steering Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt addressed the Steering Committee Meeting No 3/98 at the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) at the Ministry of Defence at 2.30 pm today.

It was also attended by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council' Chairman Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Judge Advocate-General Maj-Gen Than Oo, deputy ministers, senior military officers, members of the Steering Committee, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department and officials.

First, Secretary of the Steering Committee Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe sought the meeting's approval of the meeting minutes of the Meeting No 2/98.

Next, Chairman of the Steering Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said the Sixth ASEAN Summit will be held in Vietnam in coming December. He then called on the ministries concerned to make prior arrangements for the Summit in time.

Minister U Ohn Gyaw then reported on the preparations for the forthcoming Sixth ASEAN Summit and his experiences at the 31st ASEAN Foreign Ministers Conference in Manila, ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting in New York and the meetings which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had attended.

Afterwards, Minister Brig-Gen Abel discussed preparations for the Sixth ASEAN Summit, formation of ASEAN Services Subcommittee and matters concerning the 30th ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting and other meetings.

Secretary of the Steering Committee U Nyunt Swe reported on contributions towards the ASEAN, financial matters to be dealt with as sent by the ASEAN Secretariat, work done by the ASEAN Honorary Award Selection National Committee and matters related to BIMSTED.

Chairman of the Steering Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt then replied to points raised at the meeting.

(3)   Minister previews Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium

YANGON, 15 Oct - Patron of the Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint previewed the display for the Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium in the Myanma Gems Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 2 pm today.

First, Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Chairman of the Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein and Central Committee members previewed the gem lots, jewellery pieces, jade carvings and polished jade to be sold at fixed price on the ground floor, jade blocks outside the building, and gem lots and pearl lots on the third floor.

Secretary of the Central Committee Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and officials explained the relevant facts.

The Central Committee then held a meeting in the Myanma Gems Hall at 2.30 pm.

(4)   Artistes who participated in TV feature "Sitthwe Thitsar" hailing 53rd Anniversary of Armed Forces Day honoured

YANGON, 15 Oct - A ceremony to honour artists who participated in the cast of TV play "Sitthwe Thitsar" hailing the 53rd Anniversary of Armed Forces Day (1998), sponsored by Myanma Radio and TV and Myanma Motion Picture Asiayon, was held at MRTV this morning.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, on behalf of the Minister for Information, Director-General of MRTV U Khin Maung Htay, Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department U Chit Naing, Managing Director of Printing and Publishing Enterprise U Than Maung, Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, Managing Director of Myanma Motion picture Enterprise Col Bo Kyi, departmental officials, artistes, vocalists, cameramen, employees of MRTV and guests.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein delivered an address.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein presented gifts to Director Maung Myo Min (Yindwinphyit), Academy Nyunt Win, Academy Cho Pyone, Lu Min, Min Hein, Eindra Kyaw Zin, Soe Myat Nandar, Ayaing, Kin Kaung, Hnget Pyaw Gyaw, Po Phyu, Ko Aung Naing Tun, U Khin Maung Gyi and technicians.

Later, on behalf of the artists, Director Maung Myo Min (Yindwinphyit) thanked the officials.

(5)   Deputy Premier receives Director of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG

YANGON, 15 Oct - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received member of Board of Directors and Chief Financial Officer of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG of Germany Mr Marc Michael Bamberger and party at his office at 2 pm today.

Present were officials of the Ministry of Transport and the Office of Myanmar Investment Commission.

(6)   Minister receives Australian entrepreneurs

YANGON, 15 Oct - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein received Governing Director Noel A Gallagher and party of Seafood Traders of Australia Pty Ltd of Australia at his office at 3 pm today.

Present were Deputy Director-General U Hla Win of Directorate of Livestock and Fisheries, Deputy Director-General U Than Tun of Fisheries Department and officials.

(7)   Minister for Energy inspects Pyay oil field

YANGON, 15 Oct - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi together with officials arrived at Pyay oil field in Pyay Region on 12 October.

The minister and party inspected experimental production of natural gas and condensate at Test Well No 155 which is producing 1.4 million cu-feet of natural gas and about 3 barrels of condensate per day.

Daily natural gas production in the nation has reached 177 million cu-feet.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi presented cash awards amounting to K 50,000 to drilling staff and inspected drilling of Test Well No 157.

(8)   Minister accepts letters of appointment from FAO Resident Representative

YANGON, 15 Oct - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin received Mr Francis Rinville, the newly accredited Resident Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to the Union of Myanmar, at the ministry at 1.30 pm today.

Mr Francis Rinville presented letters of appointment from Director-General of FAO.

They discussed technological cooperation in development for agriculture and irrigation sectors with the aid of FAO.

Present were heads of departments and officials of the ministry.

(9)   Seventh Yangon Mayor's Cup Walking Race for the Blind

YANGON, 15 Oct - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay launched opening ceremony of the Seventh Yangon Mayor's Cup Walking Race for the Blind to mark the International White Cane Day at the People's Square on Pyay Road this morning.

The ceremony was attended by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win, committee members, Director-General Col Sit Myaing of the Social Welfare Department, Director-General Col Hla Myint-Kyaw of the Sports and Physical Education Department, Commander of No 4 Military Region Col Myo Myint, Chairman of Organizing Committee for the Tournament Head of Administrative Department U Myint Swe and members and departmental officials.

Altogether 332 women and men of the Social Welfare Department, School for the Blind of Kyimyindine, Myanmar Christian Fellowship of the Blind, St Mary Workshop and Thingangyun Production Cooperative Society took part in the race.

(10)  Launching of UNICEF Greeting Cards Sales

YANGON, 15 Oct - A ceremony to launch the year 1998 Sales Campaign for UNICEF Greeting Cards jointly organized by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Women's Association was held at the Strand Hotel this morning.

Present were diplomatic corps, departmental officials, officials of UN organizations, persons of non-Governmental organizations and guests.

President of UNWA Mrs Ines de Aguilar and UNICEF Resident Representative Dr Juan Aguilar Leon gave the introductory speech and explained the purpose of the fund raising campaign for UNICEF.

A video presentation for the origin of UNICEF Greeting Card Operation was next presented, followed by dances programmes by school children under the Social Welfare Department. Then, video stars Yamin Ko Ko and Nyi Nanda formally opened the sales campaign.

Regular sales of the 1998 UNICEF cards and gifts items will commence at UNICEF Office, 615 (E), Marlar Lane, Pyay Road,, Kamayut Township and No 6, Natmauk Street, Bahan Township, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 4 pm beginning 16 October.
