(1) Over 5,600 new gold plates to be offered to Shwedagon

YANGON, 14 Oct - Patron of the Perpetual and General Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt sought the advice from Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees on gilding the Shwedagon Pagoda and its encircling pagodas and maintenance of the Seinbudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and Htidaw today.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Chairman of the Pagoda Perpetual and General Renovation Leading  Committee Deputy Minister  for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Chairman of the Work Committee Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, Leading Committee members, work committee members and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

(2) PRC company donates medicines worth US $ 6,000 to Medical Services

YANGON, 14 Oct - CVC Central Medical Products Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China donated medicines worth US $ 6,000 to the Defence Services Medical Services today.

The donation ceremony at the Defence Services Medical Research and Development Committee Office, No 2 Military Hospital, this evening was graced by Secretary-2 of the State Peace
and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

First, Vice-Chairman of CVC Central Medical Products Co Ltd Mr Yang Wei Qin explained the objective of the donations and handed the medicines to Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han who accepted the donations and presented a certificate of honour.

Also present were Deputy Director of Medical Services Col Aung Naing, General Staff Officer (Grade I) Lt-Col Thaung Htaik, Lt-Col Ye Thwe of No 2 Military Hospital, Lt-Col Thein Soe of No 1 Medical Depot and senior military officers, Medical Specialists and personnel of CVC Central Medical Products Co Ltd.

(3)  12,000-ton MV Dawei added to Myanma Five Star Line

YANGON, 14 Oct - A ceremony was held on board MV Dawei at Yangon Port this morning to welcome the maiden voyage of the 12,000-ton multi-purpose sea-going cargo vessel.

MV Dawei is one of the two 12,000-ton ships Myanmar has agreed with China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMEC) to build for Myanma Five Star Line, said Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe at the ceremony.

By adding MV Dawei, MFSL fleet has now 24 ships.

Its sister ship MV Kengteng and two other 440-seated passenger-cargo coastal vessels will be completed soon.

Built at Xing Gang Shipyard in Titangyin, the People's Republic of China, in accord with Lloyd's class, MV Dawei can carry 11,654 tons of cargo including 382 20-foot containers or 138 40-foot containers, he said.

With speed of 14.7 nautical miles per hour, it can cruise up to 12,000 miles without refuelling.

It began its maiden voyage from the shipyard on 9 September 1998 and arrived the port on 10 October, earned $ 392,000 on her way to Yangon by conveying over 1,000 tons of soda ash from Xing Gang, over 6,000 tons of steel coils from Pyung Teak port, Republic of Korea, over 1,400 tons of trucks, mini-buses and general goods from Pusan port, and over 6,000 ton of cars and general cargo from Yokohama port, Japan, totalling over 15,000 tons.

Vice-Chairman of CMEC Mr Li Shuzi also gave a speech.

The ship will leave Yangon for Mumbai in India on 17 October.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Transport, principals, Managing Director of MFSL Col Khin Maung Kyi, officials of CMEC, Managing Director Mr Shao Fengchong of Xing Gang Shipyard and guests were also present.

(4) 42 MTA remnants exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 14 Oct - The State Peace and Development Council is striving for national reconsolidation, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, and is implementing the 12 political, economic and social objectives for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

Realizing that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation at all and understanding the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the government, remnants of the armed groups have been exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

The 42 remnants of MTA armed group led by Commanding Officer Li Chan bringing along with them nine M-16s, seven M-22s, one MG-42 submachine gun, one M-23, two M-79s, two .9mm pistols, one .38 pistol, one .30 carbine, two RPGs, one 60mm launcher totalling 27 assorted arms, 4,124 rounds of ammunition, 49 assorted magazines, 28 grenades, one mine and two walkie-talkies exchanged arms for peace at regional battalion in Namsam Township on 4 October.

A ceremony to exchange arms for peace was held at the parade ground of the regional battalion in Namsam Township on 12 October morning.

Present were Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Htein Win and military officers of Loilem Station, departmental officials and residents.

Lt-Col Htein Win delivered an opening speech.

CO Li Chan, on behalf of his troops, begged forgiveness for his past misdeeds.

Then, remaining MTA members presented their arms to Lt-Col Htein Win who provided cash assistance to them and fulfilled their livelihood and social needs.

More members of armed groups are reported to be planning to exchange arms for peace.

(5) Myanmar Daimex Co donates Oxygen Concentrators to Medical Services

YANGON, 14 Oct - Myanmar Daimex Co Ltd donated three Oxygen Concentrators worth
US $ 1,494 to the Defence Services Medical Services today.

The donation ceremony at the Defence Services Medical Research and Development Committee Office, No 2 Military Hospital, this evening was graced by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Representative of Daimex Co Ltd (Japan) Mr Noga Mi spoke on the occasion and Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han accepted the donations and presented a certificate of honour to the donors.

Also present were Deputy Director of Medical Services Col Aung Naing, General Staff Officer (Grade I) Lt-Col Thaung Htaik, Lt-Col Ye Thwe of No 2 Military Hospital, Lt-Col Thein Soe of No 1 Medical Depot and senior military officers, Medical Specialists and Managing Director Daw Khin Thitsa and Director U Moe Thet Myint of Myanmar Daimex Co Ltd.

(6) Myanmar delegation leaves for China

YANGON, 14 Oct - A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe left for the People's Republic of China by air this evening to discuss prospects of industrial cooperation and to study the industries there at the invitation of Minister for State Administration of Machinery Industry of PRC for boosting industrial cooperation between the Union of Myanmar and PRC.

The delegation led by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, officials of the PRC Embassy, departmental officials and relatives.

The delegation includes Director-General U Khin Maung of Directorate of Myanma Industrial Planning, Managing Director U Than Tun of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries, Managing Director Lt-Col Oo Zun of Myanma Tyre and Rubber Industries and Deputy Director U Khin Maung Cho of Directorate of Myanma Industrial Planning.

(7) Minister inspects expansion of four-mile road section in Kyaukse

YANGON, 14 Oct - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun left Mandalay on 12 October morning for Kyaukse where he inspected the four-mile section on the Yangon Mandalay Highway in town. The road section is being expanded to a four-lane road.

The minister was accompanied by Deputy Managing Director U Thant Zin, Chief Engineer (Road) U Yan Aung, Mandalay Division Superintending Engineer U Saw Sein Tun Aung and officials.

The minister and party proceeded to the bridge construction project across Zawgyi River. They were welcomed by District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Hsan Win and officials.

(8) Minister accepts letters of appointment from FAO Resident Representative

YANGON, 14 Oct - Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw received Mr Francis Rinville, the newly accredited FAO Resident Representative to the Union of Myanmar at the ministry this evening.

Mr Francis Rinville presented letters of appointment from Director-General of FAO. He expressed his wish to further promote cooperation between the Union of Myanmar and FAO.

He will actively take part in the projects with the Ministries of Agriculture and Irrigation, Forestry and Livestock and Fisheries.

(9) Rural development inspected in Myeik Township

YANGON, 14 Oct - Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council and Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung and officials inspected oil palm and rubber plantations and growing of vegetables at rubber farm of Coastal Region Command in Bokechaung Village in Myeik Township on 11 October.

The commander and party inspected construction of Basic Education Primary Schools in Meelaungchaung and Zayatseik Villages and Kyae Bailey Bridge in Palaw Township.

The commander met departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association and discussed community peace and tranquillity, ensuring smooth transport and regional development.

The commander also inspected construction of schools and Palauk Bridge in Thayetchaung Township.

(10) Stimulant tablets seized in Mongphyat

YANGON, 14 Oct - A combined group including Tatmadawmen and anti-insurgent members, acting on tip-off, combed the areas around Nanghoke Creek in Mongphyat Township, Shan State (East), on 17 September.

The group stopped and investigated five suspects with six mules who were near the creek. The group members had to shoot them as they tried to flee.

In the incident, four men drug traffickers and all mules were captured dead and Ephedrine powder weighing 181.5 kilos and 439,300 stimulant tablets were seized.
