(1) Secretary-l attends Ramayana Drama Contest

YANGON, 7 Oct - Ramayana Drama Contest of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions continued at the National Theatre on Myomakyaung Street this evening with competition of Nandwin Ramayana Drama troupe of Sovietbyan U Hla Moe of Rakhine State.

Patron of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions Organizing Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt together with members of Panel of patrons of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions Organizing Leading Committee Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Vice-Chairman of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions Organizing Leading Committee Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, chairmen of working groups and sub-committees and members, officials and enthusiasts attended the competitions.

(2) Secretary-2 and wife offer robes to 15 monasteries of North Okkalapa

YANGON, 7 Oct - Kathina robes were offered to Dhammithara, Yangon, Aungyadana, Mingala Theikpan, Okkan, Natmauk, Dagon Thiri, Maha Wizitayon, Thukhakari, Dhammanandi, Dhammaranthi, Dhammaseinda, Mingala Aungthukha, Thathana Myinzu and Gawthitayon Kyaungtaiks in Ward-2 of North Okkalapa Township by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Daw Khin Than Nwe and family at Dhammithara Kyaungtaik on Arthawady Street in Ward 2 this morning.

Present were Padana Nayaka Sayadaws of 15 monasteries, well-wishers Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Daw Khin Than Nwe and families, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, officials of the Office of State Peace and Development Council, heads of departments and guests.

(3) Conspiracy between NLD and Myanmar expatriate groups and international organizations clarified

YANGON, 7 Oct - A news briefing on how the National League for Democracy in the country has been conspiring with Myanmar Expatriate Groups and some inter national organizations to destabilise the situation and incite anarchy and uprising within Myanmar took place at the Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road here at 9.30 am today.

It was attended by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Chief of the Office of the Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Director of Special Investigation Department of Myanmar Police Force Col Ba Hein, Director (News) of the News and Periodicals Enterprise U Hla Tun, Chief Editor of Myanma News Agency (Internal) U Zaw Min Thein, military officers of the OSS and Directorate of Defence Service Intelligence, Patron U Sein Win and President U Sao Kai Hpa of the Foreign Correspondents Club and local and foreign journalists.

(4) Instructor multiplier course No 2/98 on conducting research survey of Group for Protection of Women from Violence and Rehabilitation opens

YANGON, 7 Oct - Instructor multiplier course No 2/ 98 on conducting research survey of Group for Protection of Women from Violence and Rehabilitation sponsored by Yangon Division Women Affairs Committee opened at Yangon Command this morning.

Present were Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women Affairs Dr May May Yi, Secretary of MNWCWA Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing, MNWCWA Head of Working Group for Protection of Women from Violence and Rehabilitation Dr Khin Win Shwe and members, Yangon Division Women Affairs Committee Head of Working Group for Protection of Women from Violence and Rehabilitation Daw Marlar Tint, Chairman of Yangon Division Women Affairs Committee U Kan Myint and members, Chairman of Working Committees in Districts in Yangon Division, heads of Working Group for Protection of Women from Violence and Rehabilitation, departmental officials and 100 trainees.

Dr Khin Win Shwe and U Kan Myint spoke on the occasion.

Altogether 16 well-wishers donated K 617,000 to Yangon Division Women Affairs Committee Head of Working Group for Protection of Women from Violence and Rehabilitation.

Dr Khin Win Shwe, Dr May May Yi and Daw Marlar Tint accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the donors.

Next, Dr Khin Win Shwe met the trainees.

(5) Timely completion of Yin Creek Bridge stressed

YANGON, 7 Oct - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung supervised the work for timely completion of Yin Creek Bridge Project on Magway-Taungdwingyi Railroad on 4 October.

Accompanied by officials, he inspected Magway Division Road Transport Administration Department Office.

In his meeting with staff and trainees in Meiktila Township, he explained in detail current objective conditions of the ministry sector-wise, divisions which require remedial measures and service regulations for engineers and staff.

In Wundwin Township, he oversaw renovation of Shwethalyaung Pagoda which was built by King Anawrahta.

One thousand lights were offered to the pagoda at night. Members of wut associations recited religious sermons.

On 6 October, he inspected the rails along Thazi and Pyinmana and the locomotive and coach workshop at Pyinmana Railway Station.

In Toungoo, he met staff of Township Myanmar Railways Office and Township Road Transport Administration Department.

(6) Attitude of the nationalities peace groups

There have been reports that the majority of the public is worried about the danger of deteriorating peace and of regional stability and peace being undermined after spreading of news that the four groups which had made peace with the government supported the National League for Democracy's call for convening of the Hluttaw. Hence, declarations of the peace groups will be made public to be able to vividly learn the situation between the peace groups and National League for Democracy and the true attitude of the peace groups.

Today, a translation of the declaration of the Kayan Pyithit Party of Kayah State Special Region 3 issued on 4-10-98 is stated as follows:

1.    The Kayan Pyithit Party will not support the call of the National League for Democracy to convene the Pyithu Hluttaw.

2.    The Kayan Pyithit Party will concentrate on implementing regional development projects in cooperation with the government.

(7) Commander meets officials of Kyauktaw, Paletwa townships

YANGON, 7 Oct - Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe met Col Hla Myint of Kyauktaw Station and township authorities at Kyauktaw Sugar Mill on 3 October.

He discussed with them harvesting of monsoon paddy and cultivation of cold season crops and summer paddy.

Meeting township authorities, USDA members, teachers and members of Auxiliary Fire Brigade in Paletwa on 4 October, the commander explained projects for development of Paletwa Township and economic situation of the nation.

On 5 October, he attended an alms donation ceremony for Buddhist monasteries in Paletwa Township at the office of Township Peace and Development Council.

The commander and family donated 100 bags of rice and offertories to the monasteries.

(8) Bohd Gaya pilgrims arrive back

YANGON, 7 Oct - Thirty-three Myanmars arrived back here by air yesterday evening after completion of their pilgrimage in Bohd Gaya which began on 23 September.

Arranged by Bohd Gaya Pilgrimage Supervisory Central Committee of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, they were included in the pilgrimage group 1198.

The group was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of Religious Affairs Department U Arnt Maung, Head of Office of the ministry U Maung Maung Myint and other officials.

U Arnt Maung greeted them individually and sought advice from them to make future pilgrimage programmes better.

(9) Dry rations presented to Maha Gandari Sarthintaik in Mingaladon Township

YANGON, 7 Oct - With the patronage of Minister U Khin Maung Thein and wife Daw Su Su Thein, the Ministry of Finance and Revenue donated 128 bags wife Daw Su Su Thein, the Ministry of Finance and Revenue donated 128 bags of rice, 157 viss of edible oil, 98 viss of onion, 31 viss of gram, five viss each of potato and vermicelli, five packets of monosodium glutamate and ten mats to Maha Gandari Sarthintaik in Thingangyungyi Ward in Mingaladon Township.

Soon was offered to members of the Sangha on 2 October and merits gained were shared.

(10) K 74,000 for BEPS

YANGON, 7 Oct - Well-wishers presented K 74,000 to Basic Education Primary School No 29 in Ward 12, South Okkalapa Township, on 2 October.

U Maung Maung Kyaw, Daw Nyunt Nyunt Khaing and family of 11/A, Malikha Street, Mayangon, presented K 53,000 and Managing Director U Aung Soe Hla, Daw Khin Win Kyi and family of Myatharaphu Enterprise Ltd K 21,000 to Vice-Chairman of School welfare group U Aung Tha Tun at the school.

School welfare group and donors also set up a trust fund of K 100,000 for the school.

The group was formed on 12 September 1998.

(11) Sale of 13 brands of eye drops prohibited

YANGON, 7 Oct - The authorities have prohibited the sale of 13 unregistered brands of eye drops.

They are Geracin Eye/ Ear Drops (India), Chloramphenicol Eye Drops BP (India), Tetracycline HCI Ophthalmic Ointment USPI (Germany), Geracin Eye/Ear Drops (India), Chloramphenicol Eye Drops BP (India), Norbactin Eye/Ear Drops (India), Locula Eye Drops (India), Chloroph Eye Ointment (Thailand), Itrodex Eye/Ear Drops (India), Maxidex (Belgium), Oculentum Tetracycline Ointment (China), Pi Yen Chim (China) and Soframycin Eye Drops (India).
