(1) Mon State masses call for strengthening of peace, security, maintaining the economic, development gains give NLD

YANGON, 6 Oct - Over 26,000 people of various strata of life of Mon State expressed their genuine desire at a mass meeting which was held at Ramanya Sports Ground in Mawlamyine this morning.

Representatives of 22 social and economic organizations, which included Mon State Red Cross Society, Mon State Nurses Association. Mon State Medical Association? Mon State Writers and Journalists Association, Mon State Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Mon State Women's Sports Federation, Mon State Committee of the Women's Affairs, Mon State Music Asiayon, Mon State Thabin Asiayon, Mon State Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Mon State Oil Dealers Association, Mon State Rice Dealers Association, Mon State Rice Millers Association, Mon State Video Association, cooperative societies in Mon State, Mon State Industrialists Association, All Bus Lines Control Committees of townships, Mon State Fisheries Association, Mon State Salt Makers Association, Vessel Owners Association, Mon State Union Solidarity and Development Association, Mon State Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and representatives of the people of Mawlamyine District and Thaton District were present.

The meeting also tabled and seconded two motions calling for safeguarding and maintaining economic development and ensuring food, clothing and shelter needs of the people and maintaining and safeguarding the stability of the State which has already been achieved.

(2) Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander in Chief of Defence Services Commander-in Chief (Army) receives Thai Military Attaches

YANGON, 6 Oct - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye received Military Attache of Thailand Colonel Ongard Rattanawichai, who has completed his tour of duty, and new Military Attache Col Chaiwat Satondee at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today.

Present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Director of Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein and Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than.

(3) Agreement on implementing Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project signed between Myanmar and China

YANGON, 6 Oct - A ceremony to sign an agreement on implementing Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project between Myanma Electric Power Enterprise of the Ministry of Electric Power and Yunnan Machinery & Equipment I & E Corporation (YMEC) was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning, attended by Secretary--2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Industry- 1 U Aung Thaung, Secretary of MIC Minister at the Office of the Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister at Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Director-General of Electric Power Department U Zaw Win, Managing Director of MEPE U Yan Naing, departmental officials of the Ministry of Electric Power, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong, Representative of Yunnan Province Governor Mr Wang Xue Ren, Chairman of YMEC Mr Lin Zai You and officials.

In his address, Maj-Gen Tin Htut said this is the most precious agreement in the course of economic cooperation between the Union of Myanmar and Yunnan Province Government of the People's Republic of China, and it is also a token which further strengthens friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation which have existed for years between two governments and the peoples of two countries.

Myanmar is practicing market-oriented economic system, and the electricity demand is on the vise, he said and added though the Ministry of Electric Power is implementing electric power projects in accord with the guideline of the Government, increasing electricity demand cannot be fulfilled.

He thanked the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Yunnan Province Government led by the Province Governor and YMEC for the technical and financial assistance to be able to implement Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project.

The Government of the Union of Myanmar regards Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project as a State Project and has formed the Project Leading Committee led by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

He affirmed that the Government will strive to complete the project as scheduled, if possible, earlier than scheduled.

Then, Mr Wang Xue Ren spoke.

U Yan Naing said Myanma Electric Power Enterprise, in cooperation with YMEC, has built 15 hydroelectric plants since 1990, and the total value of machinery is worth about US $ 50 million.

In Myanmar, hydroelectric power project including Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project can generate about 25,000 megawatt, he said and added projects from Ye Ywa, Bilin, Thaukyekhat, Shweli and Kuri will be implemented one after another.

The agreement on implementing Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project signed today is worth about US $ 160, and the biggest project in the course of economic cooperation of two nations, he stated.

Paunglaung Hydroelectric Plant can generate 280 megawatt and it is the biggest of its kind and the first underground factory in Myanmar, he remarked and added the project will fulfil electricity demand considerably, thereby contributing much to development of economic and social sectors of the State.

Then, Mr Lin Zai You spoke.

Later, U Yan Naing and Mr Lin Zai You signed the agreement, and exchanged documents.

(4) Wives of Myanmar senior military officers, foreign military attaches donate cash toward fund of MMCWA (Central)

YANGON, 6 Oct - A ceremony to donate cash toward the fund of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) was held at the hall of MMCWA (Central) on Thanthuma Street in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

It was attended by Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Khin Win Shwe and executives, wives of Myanmar senior military officers and wives of foreign military attaches led by Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

On behalf of all well-wishers, Mrs Rebecca Nash, Military Attache (Air) of the United States of America Col John A Nash, briefed those present on purpose of the donation and handed over K 100,000 to Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe.

The Chairperson thanked them and explained about the MMCAW.

(5) 498,000 stimulant tablets seized in Tachilek

YANGON, 6 Oct - A combined group including members of Tachilek Special Anti-Drug Squad and regional Defence Services Intelligence Unit, acting on a tip-off, raided the house of Sai Hkam in Mekhong Ward, Tachilek Township, at 11 pm on 26 September.

The authorities seized one .9mm pistol with a full ammunition magazine from Sai Hkarn and orange colour stimulant tablets 498,000 from rare of saloon car KaKa/ 5386 kept in the godown.

Action is taken against Sai Hkam, 30, son of U Aik Yi of Mekhong Ward, Tachilek Township, and g his wife Nang Shan Li, I 32, daughter of U Aik Sai under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Tachilek Police Station.

(6) Attitude of the nationalities peace groups

There have been reports that the majority of the public is worried about the danger of deteriorating peace and of regional stability and peace being undermined after spreading of news that the four groups which had made peace with the government supported the National League for Democracy's call for convening of the Hluttaw. Hence, declarations of the peace groups will be made public to be able to vividly learn the situation between the peace groups and National League for Democracy and the true attitude of the peace groups.

Today, a translation of the declaration of the Northern Shan State Special Region 2 issued on 22-9-98 is stated as follows:

Declaration on the attitude of the Northern Shan State Special Region 2 in connection with prevailing situation in the country
 

1. Myanmar built internal peace between 1989 and 1998. During the ten-year period when peace had been restored, the nation had been stable basically, national economy had developed to a certain extent and the people could earn their livelihood peacefully. Our Wa Peace Group in the special Region 2 believes that it is the basic programme of the Government to be followed steadfastly in safeguarding internal peace, working for economic progress and improving the living standard of the people.

2. We do not support the attempt of a group of persons to form a Hluttaw representative committee and then call a Hluttaw because it does not conform to the internal situation in the country.

3. Wa region is an inseparable and important part of the Union of Myanmar. We hereby declares that national races of Wa region will carry on striving for social stability and economic progress in our region and emergence of prosperous and strong nation with the leadership of the government.

(7) Deputy Premier receives Special Representative of Governor of Yunnan Province

YANGON, 6 Oct - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Special Representative of the Governor of Yunnan Province Senior Adviser of Government of Yunnan Province Mr Wang Xue Ren and party, accompanied by Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong, at his office at 3 pm today.

Present were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

They discussed mutual cooperation in Paunglaung Hydel Power Project to be implemented.

(8) Malaria Prevention Supervisory Central Committee meets

YANGON, 6 Oct - Malaria Prevention Supervisory Central Committee held its fourth meeting at Medical Research Department in Ziwaka Street this morning, with an address by Chairman of Supervisory Central Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Present were members of the committee, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, officials and specialists of Directorate of Medical Services, delegates of NGOs and scholars.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered an address.

Director-General of Health Department Dr Hla Myint reported on previous meeting's resolutions and work done and Assistant Director (Malaria) Dr Saw Lwin on outbreak of malaria in Myanmar and treatment.

Those present took part in the discussions.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the minister.

The minister and guests inspected showroom on education and treatment of malaria.

(9) Minister for Energy receives Total official

YANGON, 6 Oct - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi received Chief Executive Mr M Seguin of Total Company of France at his office at 2 pm today.

They discussed energy sector.

Present were Deputy Ministers U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung and Director-General U Soe Myint of Energy Planning Department.

(10) MIC Secretary receives GM of Mitsui Marine & Fire Insurance

YANGON, 6 Oct - Minister at the Office of the Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received General Manager Mr Sutoshi Ichihara of Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd of Japan at the commission office at 10 am today.

Present were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(11) Minister for Electric Power receives Special Representative of Governor of Yunnan Province

YANGON, 6 Oct - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut received Special Representative .of the Governor of Yunnan Province Mr Wang Xue Ren and party at his office this morning.

Present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Managing Director U Yan Naing of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise, Director-General U Zaw Win of Department of Electric Power and officials.

They discussed friendly relationship and development tasks for electric power sector.
