(1) Well-wishers donate cash for establishing trust fund for Jivitadana Sangha Hospital

YANGON, 4 Oct - A ceremony to establish trust fund for providing assistance to members of the Sangha and nuns receiving treatment at Jivitadana Sangha Hospital was held at the hospital on Kominkochin Street in Bahan Township this morning, attended by Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, district and township authorities, members of the hospital's executive committee, the Medical Superintendent, officials and well-wishers.

In his address, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt thanked those who organized the ceremony and those who donated cash generously to the hospital.

He said the hospital was established and is run with the contributions of well-wishers, and also spoke of the need for public cooperation for its progress.

Those who have profound faith in Theravada Buddhism realize the requirement of Sangha hospitals for Sayadaws and members of the Sangha to receive treatment conveniently when necessary, he said.

He said members of the Sangha are performing religious duties for purification, propagation and perpetuation of the Sasana, and only when their needs are fulfilled by the devotees properly, will they be able to carry out their duties and will the Sasana flourish perpetually.

He said well-wishers were invited to make contributions to establish funds in trust for it to acquire characteristics of a modern hospital and provide essentials to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha receiving treatment.

Afterwards, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented K 1 million donated by the National Health Committee to Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Hospital U Maung Maung (7).

(2) Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions continue

YANGON, 4 Oct - The Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions continued for the fourth day at the respective venues today.

Song competitions continued at the National Museum on Pyay Road this morning.

Altogether 15 vocalists of States and Divisions took part in basic education level women's classical and modem song contest, 14 vocalists of States and Divisions in basic education level boys' (5-10) age group Dhamma song contest and 14 vocalists from States and Divisions in professional level women's Dhamma song contest.

Professional level women's Mahagita and Professional level men's Dhamma song contests will be held on 5 October.

The dancing competitions of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions continued at the National Theatre on Myomakyaung Street at 9 am today.

Altogether 15 dancers of States and Divisions participated in basic education level men's dancing event in morning and afternoon sessions.

Altogether 15 dancers of States and Divisions took part in amateur level women's dance competitions.

Basic education level women's (10-15) age group dance contest and basic education level men's dance contest continue tomorrow.

Song composing competition was held at the Kanbawza Theatre on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Altogether 12 composers of States and Divisions took part in professional level song .composing contest. Eight composers of various States and Divisions participated in higher education level contest.

Chairman of Judges Committee for song composing competition Bogalay Tint Aung and members supervised the competition.

Music competition continued at Padonma Theatre on Bagaya Street in Sangyoung Township at 9 am today.

Chairman of Judges Committee for Music Competition Gitalulin U Ko Ko, Secretary Staff Officer Daw Myo Myo Su of Fine Arts Department and members Saung U Myint Maung, Saung U Thein Han Gyi and Sandaya U Yi Nwe supervised the competition.

Fourteen contestants participated in basic education level men's xylophone contest, 9 contestants in basic education level women's xylophone contest, two contestants in professional level women's harp contest, four contestants in professional level men's and five in amateur level women's harp contests.

Basic education level and professional level men's saing contest and amateur level women's saing contest will be held tomorrow.

(3) Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air), well-wishers donate dry rations, alms to seven Pariyatti Sarthintaiks in Mayangon Township

YANGON, 4 Oct - Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers donated dry rations and alms to Sayadaws and members of the Sangha of seven Pariyatti Sarthintaiks and one nunnery in Mayangon Township in Yangon West District today, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The Pariyatti Sarthintaiks were Pitsimayon Pali Tekkatho, Ariyamandine, KanU Zetawun, 9th mile Masoeyein, Kaytumadi, Yadana Beikhmam and NanU in Mayangon Township.

The dry rations and alms donation ceremonies held at Pitsimayon Pali Tekkatho on Ward 3 and at KanU Zetawun Sarthintaik on Ward S in Mayangon Township were also attended by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, senior military officers, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, OSD at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and departmental officials, well-wishers and members of religious associations.

At the Pitsimayon Pali Tekkatho, Lt-Gen Tin Oo, wife Daw Khin Than Nwe and ministers presented offertories to Padana Nayaka Sayadaws and members of the Sangha after receiving the Five Precepts from Padana Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kondinnya of Pitsimayon Pali Tekkatho.

(4) 656,500 amphetamine tablets seized in Kengtung

YANGON, 4 Oct - A combined team comprising members of the regional intelligence unit, Tatmadawmen, members of special anti-narcotic squad and departmental personnel, while inspecting vehicles at Tabin Checkpoint, Kengtung, Shan State (East) on 24 September, searched a Toyota Hilux vehicle with a number plate bearing (3 Kha/6058) driven by Shan Hwa aged 24, son of U Yan Naing Kyawt of Nang Sam Street, Ward-5, Lashio, and seized 656,500 amphetamine tablets bearing words "WY" weighing 60 kilogram hidden in the car, and together with Kya Mu aged 34, son of U Kya La of Mongla who hitchhiked.

Kengtung Police Station has taken action against them under Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law.

YANGON, 4 Oct - Member of the Panel of the Patron of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of cast of TV play "Moetho Lwintpyanzaymye Kaythayazadohei Arman" hailing the Annual General Meeting (1998) of the Union Solidarity and Development Association at No 2 Tatmadaw Guest House on Uyin Street this evening.

(6) Attitude of the nationalities peace groups

There have been reports that the majority of the public is worried about the danger of deteriorating peace and of regional stability and peace being undermined after spreading of news that the four groups which had made peace with the government supported the National League for Democracy's call for convening of the Hluttaw. Hence, declarations of the peace groups will be made public to be able to vividly learn the situation between the peace groups and National League for Democracy and the true attitude of the peace groups.

Today, a translation of the declaration of the New Mon State Party (NMSP) is stated as follows:
 

Declaration on attitude of NMSP in connection with acts of National League for Democracy
Date: 29 September 1998

The National League for Democracy continues its activities for convening of a Hluttaw. In connection with these activities, the New Mon State Party declares its attitude as follows:

1. The New Mon State Party reached the cease-fire and peace agreement with the government on 29 June 1995, aiming at maintenance of peace and stability of the State and regional development. It took over two years to make this agreement, on which consensus was reached after holding coordination amidst various difficulties.

2. As the National League for Democracy's demand to convene a Hluttaw is a follow-up matter of the 1990 General Election, which was organized by the government, it must be carried out in accord with the government's lawful arrangement. NLD is not authorized to do it.

3. If any organization employs confrontation campaign or is engaged in riot, violence and unlawful activities, it will cause loss to the nationalities as well as to the State and people. Hence, the New Mon State Party never ever desires or supports such activities.

4. The New Mon State Party has never made contacts or cooperated with the National League for Democracy. The New Mon State Party hereby announces that it will uphold the cease-fire and peace agreement made with the government, and strive on for development of the Mon region of Mon State and maintenance of peace and stability of the State.

(7) 390-grams heroin seized in Mandalay

YANGON, 4 Oct - A combined team comprising members of the regional intelligence unit and the special anti-narcotic squad, acting on a tip-off at Pangaba cold drinks shop on 42 Street between 80th and 81st Streets, Chanmyaythazi North Ward, Maha Aungmyay Township Mandalay, on 15 September, seized 17 soap boxes containing 390-grams heroin from a handbag bearing a line of writing "State Sangha Maha Nayaka", which was carried by Bhaddanta Ottama (a) Min Htay aged 31 and Bhaddanta Janeya (a) San Lwin aged 30 of Padamyakyaung of Dhammikaramataik, Chanmyaythazi Township.

Aungmyaythazan Township Police Station No 1 opened a case and action has been taken against them under Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(8) Central Command Commander tours Myingyan District

YANGON, 4 Oct - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Chairman of Myingyan District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Swe and officials, inspected Myingyan People's Hospital on 2 October.

He inspected the operation theatre, X-ray unit and wards.

He proceeded to Myingyan Home for the Aged where he heard reports on the salient points about the home and expenditure.

The Commander presented K 20,000 donated by Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council for the home to U Thaung Sein, the in-charge of the home, and K 200 each to the 35 aged people.

He met executives of Myingyan District and Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations and ward organizers' at the District USDA office.

Also present were Executive of Mandalay Division USDA U Maung Maung, secretaries of Myingyan District and Township USDAs, executives of Myingyan, Taungtha, Kyaukpa daung and Nahtoegyi Township USDAs and ward organizers.

The Commander spoke of the need for all USDA members to strive for materialization of the association's objectives, carry out community welfare services and uphold their code of conduct.

Later, the Commander attended the coordination meeting of Myingyan District and Township agriculture supervisory committees.

He gave suggestions on boosting production of the four main crops in the district and implementation of regional development projects.

Chairman of Myingyan District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Swe reported on cultivation of paddy, beans, cotton and edible oil crops, and chairman of other township councils on the respective townships' cultivation of crops.

Afterwards, the Commander toured Taungpinle and Myaukpinle Dams, and paddy and beans farms irrigated by Myaukpinle Dam, and inspected construction of entrance road to TadaU International Airport Project.

(9) Minister for Health inspects disease control measures in North Okkalapa

YANGON, 4 Oct - Members of National Health Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Chairman of YCDC ViceMayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint Secretary U Kyi Win, member Col Tin Soe, Director-General of Health Department Dr Hla Myint, Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Kyaw Myint, Director of Health Planning Department U Aung Kyaing and YCDC officials inspected disease control measures being undertaken in North Okkalapa Township this morning.

The Minister, the Mayor and officials arrived in North Okkalapa where Township Development Affairs Officer U Sit Aung reported on disease control measures and work to be done.

The minister, the mayor and party inspected preventive measures for dengue hemorrhagic fever, eradication of mosquito and better drainage carried out by health staff, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung Maung Khin and members, Secretary of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association U Thein Tun and local people in Ggnge Ward.

The Minister and party called for cooperation with the respective departments.

(10) Minister inspects Metallurgy Research and Development Centre in E-la

YANGON, 4 Oct - Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and officials met service personnel of Metallurgy Research and Development Centre in E-la on 3 October.

The minister gave instructions on working for the good of all the fellow employees and cultivation of perennial plants.

The minister inspected laboratories at the centre. He also met heads of branches.

(11) Ma Zin April Aung sets new record in 50-metre backstroke

YANGON, 4 Oct - Sports and education combined training course is under way at the Sports and Physical Education Institute beginning 1997-98 academic year.

Ten trainees of the course participated in the 1998 invitational swimming and water polo competitions held at the National Swimming Pool from 2 to 4 October. They won 14 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze totaling 26.

Ma Zin April Aung, 11, won 6 gold and put new record in 50-metre back stroke, clocking 35.63 sec breaking her old record set in May 1998.
