(1) Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to President of Costa Rica

YANGON, 15 Sept - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Miguel Angel Rodriguez Echeverria, President of the Republic of Costa Rica, on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Costa Rica which falls on 15 September 1998.

(2) Third-day session of Annual General Meeting for 1998 of USDA hears reports, final procedures

YANGON, 14 Sept - The Annual General Meeting for 1998 of the Union Solidarity and Development Association continued for the third day in the Union Hall of the USDA Executives Management Training School of the Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby this morning.

It was attended by members of the central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, secretaries of State/Division USDAs and delegates of State/Division, District and Township USDAs to the USDA Annual General Meeting for 1998.

Members of the CEC of USDA and delegates signed the attendance books in Anawrahta Hall.

Members of the panel of the chairmen were CEC members U Soe Tha, U Khin Maung and Thura U Aung Ko.

Secretary of Hpa-an Township USDA of Kayin State U Saw Aye Lwin acted as master of ceremonies with Secretary of Chanmyathazi Township USDA of Mandalay Division U Tin Tun as joint emcee.

The master of ceremonies pronounced the meeting valid as it was attended by 435 delegates, and declared the session open with the approval of the chairman.

Delegates of respective groups reported on findings and proposals at the discussions yesterday.

In a report on findings, at the discussions on the organizational sector, EC member of PyinOoLwin Township USDA of Mandalay Division Daw Sabei Win said seven future tasks are in conformity and identical with the objective conditions of Myanmar, and they are of the essence in striving for the interest of the State and the people.

Therefore, she added, they must be regarded as the future tasks of the USDAs at different levels and implemented successfully.

She then made suggestions on the report on the organizational sector to the Annual General Meeting for 1998 of the USDA.

In a report on findings at the discussion on the administrative sector, EC member of Maubin District USDA of Ayeyawady Division Daw Ata Oo said now the USDA is making efforts with added momentum to turn the nation into a peaceful, modern and developed one with firm belief.

She added bearing in mind the noble motto of the association "morale, discipline, solidarity and unity", USDA members are, under the leadership of the CEC, to crush internal axe-handles trying to disrupt the peace and tranquillity and development of the nation and external destructive elements aiding and abetting them.

In a report on findings at, the discussion on the economic sector, EC member of Myitkyina District USDA of Kachin State U Chit Oo said at a time when the State Peace and Development Council is striving for the development of the State day and night, external destructive forces who could not bear to see the economic development of the State, and internal axe-handles in collusion are resorting to various means to impede the progress of the nation and to get the people poverty-stricken.

USDAs at different levels are to oppose the destructive acts of internal and external elements with unity and strength of the association, and to make efforts to achieve success in the economic sector, he said and however external subversives and internal axe-handles are trying to get the State and the people into trouble, the association pledges itself to do its level best in striving to achieve success in the organizational, economic and social sectors.

In a report on findings at the discussion on the social and cultural sector, EC member of Phekhon Township USDA of Shan State (South) Daw Aye Cho Sein said it is found that achievements in implementing the tasks in some states and divisions are far beyond those described in the report, and added local people will be delighted that if the accomplishments of the associations at different levels can be described in the report.

She also expressed her belief that remedial measures can be taken if weakness and shortcomings are singled out.

In conclusion, she made suggestions on the Report on the social and cultural sector to the Annual General Meeting for 1998 of the USDA.

Then, the meeting recessed.

At 10.00 am, the meeting resumed.

Member of the Secretariat of USDA U Win Sein replied to points on findings at the discussion on the organizational sector.

CEC member U Than Shwe replied to points on findings at the discussions on the administrative sector.

CEC member U Aung Thaung replied to points on findings at the discussions on the economic sector.

Member of the Secretary of USDA U Ko Lay replied to points on findings at the discussions on the social and cultural sector.

Then, EC member of Lashio Township USDA of Shan State (North) Daw Nang Pyone Pyone Kyi tabled a motion on preventing the dangers to the stability, progress and development of the State and the need for USDA members to take part in efforts for stability and development in the country. EC member of Taunggyi District USDA of Shan State (South) U Kyaw Soe Hlaing seconded the motion. (Reported separately.)

The third-day session of the AGM ended at 11.25 am.

The meeting will continue tomorrow.

(3) Nearly K 10.89m for construction of three-storey building at Dekkhinayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik

YANGON, 14 Sept - A cash donation ceremony for building a three-storey building at Dekkhinayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Dagon Township, was held there today attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director of Military Engineers Brig-Gen Win Aung Tint, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, OSD at State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, officials, guests and donors were also present.

(4) Deputy Prime Ministers inspect Thanlyin-Kyauktan Region, Thilawa Port

YANGON, 14 Sept - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun inspected projects being implemented for development of Thanlyin-Kyauktan Region, establishment of industrial zone, Thilawa Port Project and factories which are being operated with the permission of Myanmar Investment Commission in the region and gave instructions to officials today.

(5) Members of Myanmar delegation recount Korea visit

YANGON, 14 Sept - Members of Myanmar delegation who visited the Republic of Korea under the Korea-ASEAN Youth Cooperation Programme recounted their experiences to delegates of State, Division, District and Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations who are attending the Annual General Meeting of USDA at Myawady Thabin Hall of USDA Executives Management Training School of the Central Public Relations Unit this afternoon.

Present were USDA CEC members U Than Shwe and U Thein Sein and USDA delegates.

Major Aung Min, U Aung Chit, Daw Lwin Lwin Myint and Daw Ei Ei San recounted their experiences in Korea.

Leader of the delegation U Kyaw Aye handed over souvenirs presented by Korea Scout Youths to Than Shwe and U Thein Sein.

The delegates observed documentary photos and other publications of the Korea tour.

(6) Myanmar Travel Show opens in Bangkok

YANGON, 14 Sept - Myanmar Travel Show will be held at Baiyoke Sky Hotel in Bangkok on 15 and 16 September to attract more tourists from Thailand market to Myanmar and to promote the nation's tourism industry.

At the show, Myanmar and Thai entrepreneurs and air services will seek means to increase the number of tourists to both nations and to cooperate with air services to extend flights so Myanmar, offering special rates for package tours to the tourist destination.

Fifty-eight tourism industries of Myanmar and two air services with 1165 entrepreneurs will participate at the show initiated by Chairman of Tourism Development Management Committee Secretary 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Led by Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt, the Myanmar delegation left by air today in two groups.

Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, departmental personnel and relatives saw them off at Yangon International Airport.

(7) General knowledge contest

YANGON, 14 Sept - Central Committee to Hold National Motto, Literary and Photo Competitions will hold institutions of higher education level general knowledge contest on 19 September (Saturday) from 9 am to noon at the respective universities, degree colleges, colleges and institutes.

Awards will be presented to first, second and third prize winners at Sazodaw Day ceremony on 19 November 1998.

(8) Rice research course opens

YANGON, 14 Sept - Myanma Agriculture Service and International Rice Research Institute co-sponsored a training on collection and preservation on the rice genepool germplasm at Central Agriculture Development Training School in Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, today.

Managing Director of MAS U Tun Thein, and Representative of IRRI Dr AG Garcia spoke.

Twenty nine trainees are attaining the one-week course.

(9) Marubeni Corp donates US $ 114,000 for construction of primary schools

YANGON, 14 Sept - No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City) and Marubeni Corporation of Japan signed a grant contract on construction of new buildings for No 8 Basic Education Primary School (Dagon Myothit-South), No 29 Basic Education Primary School (Dagon Myothit North) and No 28 Basic Education Primary School (Hlinethaya Township) at No 3 BED this evening.

Present were Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Charge d' Affaires ai of Embassy of Japan Mr Yoshihiko Kamo, Deputy Director-General of No 3 BED U Thaung Shwe, respective Township Education Officers and school heads.

Mr Yoshihiko Kamo, Deputy Director-General U Thaung Shwe spoke on the occasion.

Next, Mr Yoshihiko Kamo and school heads Daw Thida. Win, U Win Shwe and U Aung Than signed the agreement.

Marubeni Corporation donated US $ 114,000 for buildings of three schools.

(10) Minister for Health receives Head of Environmental Health of WHO

YANGON, 14 Sep - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Kept Sein received Head of Environmental Health Dr Abdul Sattar Yusoof of ASEAN Region Directors Office of WHO and Resident Representative Dr Klaus Wagner at his office this afternoon.

Present also were Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and officials of the ministry.

(11) Building of Bo Myat Tun Badge gaining momentum

YANGON, 14 Sept - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun inspected a work shop of Public Works at Ushitpin on Pathein-Monywa Highway yesterday.

Officials briefed the minister on repair of heavy equipment at the workshop and staff strength.

Efforts should be made for systematic storage of machines and parts and keeping of records, he said.

Accompanied by Deputy Managing Director of Public Works U Nay Soe Naing, Chief Engineer U Than Ngwe and officials, he inspected repair of heavy equipment and stressed the need to strive for timely completion of machines.

On their way to Hinthada, they inspected Kauk-Myokwin-Hinthada Road and bridges on it.

In Hinthada, the minister discussed with officials on maintenance of roads and bridges.

They also inspected Hinthada-Zalun Road.

At Bo Myat Tun Bridge Project on Zalun-Danubyu-Setkaw Road, they inspected progress in installation of piers, flooring of the approach roads and installation of frames on the main bridge.

Superintending Engineer U Pe Than briefed them on accomplishments and future programmes.

Framing has been completed up to pier 4 and is being continued on pier 5.
