(1)   Secretary-1 inspects preparations for opening International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University

YANGON, 13 Sept - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected preparations for opening International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University of the Ministry of Religious Affairs this afternoon.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of Office of the State Peace and Development Council, arrived at International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University in Mayangon Township this afternoon.

He was welcomed there by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, heads of departments concerned, directors-general and officials of the Religious Affairs Department, the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and the university.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa briefed the Secretary-l on application of trainees seeking admission, arrangements for selecting trainees, strength of faculty members, drawing of curriculums, collection of books for teaching and teacher's guide, strength of appointed staff, progress in construction of buildings and preparations for the opening ceremony of the university.

Pro-Rector of ITBMU Maha Gandawasaka Pandita Dr Bhaddanta Naymeinda then explained matters related to teaching.

It was followed by a report on administrative affairs including arrangements for selecting trainees and preparations for the opening ceremony presented by Dr Hla Pe, Pro-Rector (Administration) of ITBMU.

Next, officials of Public Works reported on progress in building of the university including construction of lecture halls, administrative office and library.

Afterwards, Head of Patipatti Maha Department Bhaddanta Pyinnyadipa, Head of Pariyatti Maha Department Bhaddanta Dr Ardisawuntha and Professor U Ko Lay explained to the Secretary-l arrangements for long-term existence of ITBMU, promotion and propagation of Theravada Buddhism and bringing out publications to mark the opening ceremony.

After hearing the reports, the Secretary-1 said all were expecting much and welcoming endeavours being made for establishing International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University so as to widely conduct Buddhist missionary activities worldwide.

As it is a task which should be implemented at a time when the State Peace and Development Council is taking State duties, all at different levels concerned would have to make efforts to be able to open it in accordance with the counsel given by Sayadaws, he said, adding Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe himself had given necessary instructions to be able to open the university.

The Secretary-l noted it was worthy of honour that a milestone could be set up in Buddhist missionary history by establishing International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University in the time of the State Peace and Development Council.

Diploma courses would begin at the university in December this year, he said and spoke of the need to draw plans to be able to open courses as scheduled.

The Secretary-1 called on all to unitedly cooperate in building International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University to show how much Theravada Buddhism flourishes in the nation and how deep the people believe in it.

Afterwards, he accepted cash donated by well-wishers for the university.

The donations include K 100,000 donated by U Tun Win and family of Room 66, Building 111/2, Zaygyi Street, Kyimyindine Township, for construction of a two-storey building for the university and K 180,000 each by U Maung Maung Lwin and Daw Sein Sein family of Lwin Construction and U Tin Win and Daw San San Win family of KN Co for religious books for members of the Sangha.

Later, the Secretary-1 inspected construction of lecture halls and hostels and the site chosen for building of administrative office and library.

(2)   Secretary-1 inspects construction of sixth Buddhist Synod Sacred Museum

YANGON, 13 Sept-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this evening inspected construction of Sixth Buddhist Synod Sacred Museum and preparations to offer Magaiktaw and Salwetaw to Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image.

The Secretary-l, accompanied by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, arrived at Kaba Aye Hill and inspected construction of progress of work of Sixth Buddhist Synod Sacred Museum.

The Secretary-l and party went to Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image on Gyatawya Road in Bahan Township where they were welcomed by Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Lt-Col Hsan Hsint, officials and members of the Board of Trustees.

The Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Bronze Buddha Image.

Officials then reported on preparations to offer Magaiktaw and Salwetaw to Bronze Buddha Image and the Secretary-1 gave instructions.

(3)   USDA uniforms, exercise books donated

YANGON, 13 Sept - As a gesture honouring the Annual General Meeting of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, a ceremony to donate association uniforms and exercise books was held at No 1 Basic Education High School of Botahtaung Township on 11 September afternoon.

Secretary of Township Peace and Development Council U Phone Myint and acting Secretary of Township USDA U Hla Thein spoke on the occasion.

U Hla Thein and organizer of Ward-3 U Wai Lin presented 20 dozens of books and 20 association uniforms to Headmistress Daw Than Shin.

School organizer Daw Nila Aung handed over 486 USDA membership applications of the school to township organizer U Tun Tun Zaw.

Secretary of Aungsi Cooperative Society U Kan Shwe donated K 10,000 for Ward-3.

Then, USDA members and students totaling 1,500 carried out sanitation in the compound of the school.

(4)   Secretary-2 visits factories in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone

YANGON, 13 Sept - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected factories in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone, Shwepyitha Township, Yangon North District, this afternoon.

He was accompanied by Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col-Myint Swe, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, OSD at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and officials.

First, the Secretary-2 visited Ve Ve soft drink factory of Green Circle Co Ltd where he was welcomed by Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Work Committee Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and officials of the Industrial Zone Management Committee and the company.

Managing Director U Kyaw Myint (a) U Htay Myint of Green Circle briefed the Secretary-2 on building of the factory, investment, availability of raw materials, production and marketing.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions after touring the factory.

He then proceeded to Shwethazin Polythene Factory and heard reports on the factory presented by Patron U Shwe of Shwethazin Syndicate Co.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on production of import substitutes and urgent them to strive for promotion of export.

Ministers Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Brig-Gen Lun Maung then explained to the Secretary-2 establishment of industries in the entire nation for development of industries and arrangements made by the government for fulfilling requirements of industrial entrepreneurs.

Next, the Secretary-2 and ministers visited Shwethazin Soap Factory where they inspected production of Fuji soap.

They then went to the garment factory of Crocodile Trading Co Ltd where they were welcomed by Managing Director U Aung Win, Factory Manager U Kyaw Win and officials.

Officials conducted the dignitaries around the factory and explained to them about it.

The Secretary-2 and ministers heard their reports and attended to the needs.

(5)   Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) families, well-wishers donate dry rations to members of Sangha in Kamayut Hline Townships

YANGON, 13 Sept - Ceremonies to donate dry rations, edible oil and medicines to 551 members of the Sangha of eight Pariyatti Sarthintaiks in Kamayut and Hline Townships by Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) families and well-wishers were held at the respective Sarthintaiks this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister at the Office of Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, senior military officers, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, departmental officials, chairmen of District, Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, members and organizers, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and members of Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association and well-wishers.

Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) families and well-wishers donated dry rations to Thuseiktayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Thiri Mingala Pyawbwe Kyaung and Sasana Paragu Kyaungtaik in Kamayut Township at Thuseiktayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik on Khaing Shwe Wa Street, Kamayut Township, this morning.

Congregation received the Five Precepts from presiding Sayadaw of Thiri Migala Pyawbwe Kyaungtaik member of Central Working Committee of the Sangha Agga Maha Pandita Obasa.

(6)   Minister inspects Pyay-Padaung-Taunggup Highway

YANGON, 13 Sept - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun inspected Pyay-Padaung-Taunggup Highway yesterday.

The minister was accompanied by Deputy Managing Director U Nay Soe Naing, Deputy Chief Engineer U Thaung Nyunt, Bago Division Engineer U Soe Aung and Chairman of Pyay District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Win.

The minister oversaw repair work of the road section between Padaung Taunggup and building of drains along the road.

Meeting officials at Nyaunggyo Village, Padaung Township, the minister gave instructions to pay special care to maintenance of the road which is a vital link between Bago Division and Rakhine State, to ensure smooth flow at drains on both sides of the mountain road and to make systematic arrangements for repairing the road in open season so that landslide will not occur in monsoon.

(7)   Supervisory Committee of Project to Find Markets Abroad for Myanma Lesser Known Timber Species meets

YANGON, 13 Sept - The Supervisory Committee of the Project to Find Markets Abroad for Myanma Lesser Known Timber Species being jointly implemented by Forest Department of the Ministry of Forestry and the International Tropical Timber Organization held its sixth project supervisory meeting at Forest Department Head Office this morning.

Present were Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Planning Manager of International Tropical Timber Organization Dr Hwan Ok Ma, Director-General of Planning and Statistics Department U Soe Tint Director-General of Forest Department Dr Kyaw Tint, Managing Director of Myanma Timber Enterprise U Shwe Baw and members of the Project Supervisory Committee.

Minister U Aung Phone delivered the opening address.

Dr Hwan Ok Ma explained the project activities, followed by a general round of discussions.

(8)   Commander tours Minkyaung Creek Bridge Project

YANGON, 13 Sept - Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, accompanied by officials, yesterday inspected Minkyaung Creek Bridge project being undertaken by Bridge Project Special Group 11.

At the project site, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Myo Chit, in-charge of the project, briefed the Commander on construction of piers, collection of funds, supply of fuel and use of machines at the work-site.

The Commander later Inspected the work-site and left necessary instructions.

It is a bailey bridge, 2,003 feet long and 28 feet wide.  The estimate cost for the project is over K 1.6 billion.

The bridge is scheduled for completion. in November 1999.

(9)   Monsoon paddy fields, sites for rice, edible oil mills, agriculture research farm inspected in Shan State (East)

YANGON, 13 Sept - Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of the Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, accompanied by departmental officials and staff officers, inspected monsoon paddy fields in Yanlaw and Loilon village-tracts in Kengtung Township on 10 September.

Meeting farmers of the neighbouring village-tracts and departmental officials, the Commander gave suggestions on boosting monsoon paddy production, pest control, weeding, systematic use of fertilizers and livestock and fishery for food sufficiency.

He later inspected the sites designated for building rice and edible oil mills to be established by the Triangle Region Command Social Welfare Society and for Shan State (East) Agriculture Research Farm.
