(1)   Secretary-l receives Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Tonga

YANGON, 9 Sept - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received visiting Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Tonga HRH Tupoutoa at Dagon Yeiktha of the Minister of Defence at 1 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Deputy Director of Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

(2)   Secretary-1 attends graduation ceremony of Diploma in Hotel Management Course (12 Modules)

YANGON, 9 Sept - The graduation ceremony of the Diploma in Hotel Management Course (12 Modules) jointly sponsored by Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Singapore Hotel and Tourism Education Centre (SHATEC) was held at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services U Kyi Tun, officials of STB and SHATEC, Principal of Hotels and Tourism Training Department, course instructors, trainees and guests.

(3)   Deputy FM hosts dinner in honour of Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Tonga

YANGON, 9 Sept - Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Tonga HRH Tupoutoa arrived here by Thai International Airways on 7 September for a visit in the Union of Myanmar from 7 to 11 September.

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe hosted dinner in honour of the visiting Crown Prince of Tonga at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel at 6 pm today.

Present were Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Deputy Minister for Industry-l Col Than Zin, Deputy Director of Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win officials of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

(4)   Tatmadaw's fine traditions and qualities to be portrayed on 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade

YANGON, 9 Sept - The 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Organizing Leading Committee held its first meeting in the Auditorium of the Ministry of Defence at 1 pm today and Chairman of the Leading Committee Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an address.

He said the present meeting was the first to be held for successfully organizing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day which falls on 27 March 1999.

He said success of the previous 53rd Anniversary Armed Forces Day was due to concerted efforts of the work committees and organizations concerned.  He then called on the work committees and organizations to take remedial measures and make greater efforts for achieving similar success based on the experiences.  He disclosed that the Armed Forces Day parade would comprise nine military columns made up of six parading companies each.

He noted that international community takes interest in Myanmar and is closely watching the undertakings and endeavours of the State Peace and Development Council (the Tatmadaw Government).

He spoke of the need to make the international community observing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade to realize that the Tatmadaw is equipped with the five basic qualities, namely, morale, good discipline, unity, loyalty and possessing three capabilities.

He said three principal duties of the Tatmadaw today are national defence, training and to perpetually serve the people.

The Tatmadaw, he said, is always training, always keeping military alert and in combat readiness to encounter any enemy harming perpetuation of the Union, national solidarity, sovereignty and public interests. With such readiness, he said, the Tatmadaw is discharging national defence duty to protect the territory.

He said the Tatmadaw would also safeguard the three sovereign powers, namely legislative, executive and judicial, at the risk of life.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt Kyi Min and senior officers of the Ministry of Defence.

(5)   Deputy Prime Minister receives Executive VP of Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance

YANGON, 9 Sept - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Executive Vice-President Mr Takashi Kawahara and party of Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd of Japan at his office at 10.30 am today.

Present were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

They discussed cooperation in insurance.

(6)   Minister for A&I meets officials of Myaungmya District and Township, entrepreneurs of Myaungmya Industrial Zone

YANGON, 9 Sept - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, together with officials, met chairmen and members of Myaungmya District and Township Peace and Development Councils, Division, District and Township Agriculture Coordinating Committees and entrepreneurs of Myaungmya Industrial Zone at Myashwewa Hall, Myaungmya, Ayeyawady Division, on 7 September.

Lt-Col Tin Aye, Chairman of Myaungmya District Peace and Development Council, briefed the minister on arrangements for harvesting monsoon paddy, project for cultivation of summer paddy and cold season crops, availability of water and industries of the entrepreneurs.

It was followed by reports on manufacturing of farm machines and requirements submitted by the entrepreneurs.

After hearing their reports, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, who is also member of Myanma Industrial Development Committee, spoke about development of agro-based industries, improvement of quality and quantity of industrial products, innovation, work being carried out for surplus of paddy condition of monsoon paddy cultivation, preparations for harvesting monsoon paddy and cultivating summer paddy and cold season crops and reclamation work in wetlands

Afterwards, the minister inspected equipment manufactured by Myaungmya Industrial Zone.

He then proceeded to Central Farm of Myanma Agriculture Service in Myaungmya and heard reports on functions of the farm by MAS Managing Director U Tun Than and officials.  The minister urged the farms to cultivate the crops suitable to the region and strive for becoming ones producing quality strain paddy and meeting the production target.

Next, he inspected paddy nursery and model plots of Manaw Thukha paddy there and gave instructions.

Later, the minister inspected No 38 Tractors Depot of Myaungmya Agricultural Mechanization Department and gave instructions on maintenance and repair of tractors and welfare of employees of the depot.

(7)   National Convention Convening Commission holds coord meeting

YANGON, 9 Sept - The National Convention Convening Commission held its coordination meeting at the Commission Office at 2 pm today.

Present were Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and members.

Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin spoke on the occasion.

Then, National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convening Management Committee reported on the matters related to National Convention.  Members of NCCC took part in the discussions.

Later, Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin gave a concluding speech.

(8)   Co-sponsored insurance seminar opens

YANGON, 9 Sept - Myanmar Insurance and Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Group of Australia co-sponsored a seminar on liability insurance, social insurance and health and worker's compensation insurance at Traders Hotel today addressed by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein.

Liability insurance will become more vital resulting from extension of businesses in Myanmar, he said, adding social insurance and health and worker's compensation insurance are widely conducted for benefit of individual citizens.

Insurance Law was enacted for the business to cope with the growing national economy and the private business sector, he said.

General Manager Mr Peter Piron of MMI Group also spoke.

Deputy Minister at Office of Chairman of State Peace and Development Council U Set Maung, Deputy Minister for F&R Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, heads of department of Ministry of F&R, Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Health and officials of MMI Group were also present.

(9)   Ministers of South-East Asia Region in New Delhi

YANGON, 9 Sept - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Kyaw Myint arrived back here this morning after attending the 16th Meeting of Health Ministers of South East Asia Region held g from 2 to 8 September in New Delhi, India.

The minister was welcomed at the airport by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Ambassador of India Mr Shyan Saram, WHO Resident Representative Dr Klaus Wagner, departmental officials and families.

The Ministers for Health from Myanma, India, Maldives, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, North Korea and Nepal and Secretaries of Health Departments of Thailand and Bangladesh attended the meeting.

The meeting was presided over by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Mr Delit Ezhilmalai with Vice-Chairman Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

The opening ceremony was held on 3 September.

Vice-President of India Mr Shri Krisha Kant, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Mr Delit Ezhilmalai and WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Mr Uton Muchtar Rafei.

Primary health care, cooperation among nations in the region, school health, development traditional medicine and providing technical assistance to produce medicines locally.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein reported on health development programmes being undertaken with the leadership of National Health Committee, prevention, treatment and education programmes on HIV, AIDS and TB.  Health Declaration drafted for 21st century was approved at the meeting.

The minister visited National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), India Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and India Heart Foundation in New Delhi and Leprosy control centre in Agra.

On 7 September, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein addressed the ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of WHO.

Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association won a prize for measures undertaken for maternal and child welfare services. Dr Uton Muchtar Rafei presented the prize to Maj-Gen Ket Sein.
